    Some people, the fortunate few, stumble on passion. Most people who write tome say, I am lost . They can't find their passion. I ask, how much work have youdone to find what youve lost?     THE LONGER (AND SLIGHTLY MORE ENTERTAINING) STOIve had my share of soul-crushing jobs and believe me, theres a better way.Ten years ago, my dad gave me a copy of What Color Is Your Parachute by DickBolles. After reading it two epiphanies hit:

    ! Everyone deserves to do meaningful work that they are actually good at.

    ! In order to have a chance at finding it you have to dedicate yourself tolearning, improving and experimenting with all kinds of stuff.

    SO MY ADVENTURE BEGANAfter university, I was rejected from my dream job, so I took the road lesstraveled to Spain to run with the bulls. My 7-week trip turned into a year, whereI co-founded an English teaching company for businessmen, and led tours

    through Morocco and Portugal on the weekends.

    Spaniards prioritizedenjoyment over money, and I realized life did not have to be lived the way itwas in the States. Exploring, seeking meaningful adventure and testing limitsquickly became a huge part of life.

    I sold the business only to move back and fall into corporate hell, which Icouldnt stand one day over seven months. I fired myself in search of somethingI could actually screw up.

    I launched my first blog, ReadingForYourSuccess (which has since been replacedby Live Your Legend ), to document my experiences as I sought out work thatmattered to me . I then stumbled on a preventive healthcare startup, BioIQ,with a product I actually cared about, and spent two years running their Market

    Validation team and learning what made a business tick.

    Now I wanted something of my own which better leveraged my time, gaveme balance, helped others and lit a fire in my belly. So, I launched an

    investment partnership that recreated the way Warren Buffett managedinvestments for families in Omaha, Nebraska when he was thirty years old (Im alifetime Buffett fanatic).

    We launched in the heart of the 2008/2009 economic meltdown. Good thingmy fire was lit, because it was a terrifying start. But looking back, the timing

    couldnt have been better. Working for someone else in the investment spacenever crossed my mind, because the lack of balance, ethics and widespreadgreed disgusted me. And they probably wouldnt have hired me anyway.

    Meanwhile, my desire to learn and help people on a more personal level keptme up at night. I began teaching speed-reading and started writing andcoaching to help people find their freedom and do work they love.

    After 8 years of running experiments on others and myself to betterunderstand what lights us on fire, I noticed a process for making thesediscoveries.

    I soon became the go-to-guy among friends and colleagues when they weretired and dreading getting up each morning. If they were in search of

    something more meaningful, I got a call.

    I was pretty much the guy people grabbed when they wanted to quit and just needed a push. My quit rate was about 80%8 out of 10 people I satdown with quit their job within a few months. Not bad.

    I loved it so much, I started helping others find the same through coaching,writing, documenting folks living their legends all over the world, and doing allkinds of wild adventures (i.e. things that scared me).

    I began measuring success on whether I could help even one person; so farso good. Things started to catch on and my blog started to grow pretty fast.Turns out other people cared about this stuff too. Ive since gotten to write forsome pretty big blogs and websites and surrounded myself with other uber-passionate people. Its been an amazing ride.

    Along the journey I also bought an engagement ring from Warren Buffett after

    receiving a personal letter from him (he owns a nice little jewelry store inOmaha), and I married my college love of seven years. This is my greatestsuccess to date. Our Croatian honeymoon was the best education Ive had inyears.

    NOW IT'S TIME TO START CONNECTING DREAMS TO REALITY. The bestway to do this is by spending time around people living their dreams andespecially the ones living dreams similar to yours. Passion is much too importantto go at it alone.

    Think of the five or 10 people you spend most time with. What are these peopledoing? How passionate are they? Do they inspire you?

    If the answer is no, then its time to find new friends.

    One of the biggest single predictors of success, however you want to define it -is the people who surround you.

    The world influences us more than we realize, and more than wed like tobelieve.

    HOW TO CULTIVATE PASSIONThe music was pounding, green lasers filled the sky, I could hardly see throughthe fog. It was 1:30am, Richard Branson had just wrapped up his keynote andThe Roots had just taken the stage. Then the horn sounded, announcing ourboat had officially set sail for an undisclosed private island. The night, let alonethe next four days, had hardly just begun. I was among 999 otherentrepreneurs, everyone from Richard Branson and Blake Mycoskie to TimFerriss and Keith Ferrazzi, and my mind was officially about to be blown.

    Let me explain...

    A few years ago a handful of guys in their early twenties decided they wantedto do something to change the world. So they invited 50 or so entrepreneursand future world-changers to get together and called it Summit Series .

    In four years, those 50 people turned into 1,000 of the most big-time thinkersand entrepreneurs of today and tomorrow. And Im not justtalking wealthy people. Sure, some had enough cash to buy two or three of thelittle islands we were heading for, but more importantly, they are all on theirown path to put a dent in the world. Philanthropy, technology, education, arts,human rights, innovation, personal growth, you name it.

    This year the founders decided to put all 1,000 on a boat for four days. Thats it.

    The rest was on us.

    They knew that if you surround yourself with big dreamers and creators, theresults would be exponential.

    This equation has always held true.

    I was grateful to have been among such company.

    Everything starts with passionate people.

    I prioritize my life around spending time with them. It started with my motherand father and has continued with friends, classmates and colleagues. I spendtime around passionate folks I dont even know, almost daily, because I seekout environments where theyll be.

    Thats how I realized I wanted to speak, write and coach through Live YourLegend . Its how I realized I wanted to run the investment partnership I do andits how I crossed paths with my wife.

    You never know what youll get, but you can be sure it will be worthwhile.

    Spending time with them - and all of you - is like therapy. You make me want tobuild new things, run faster, eat healthier, dream bigger and live on a new levelaltogether.

    Relationships are a choice

    Anyone who doesnt have them doesnt care enough. It can be scary to meetnew people, but theres nothing more worth it. Our biggest fundamental needas humans is to love and be loved. We all seek connection. But its not always

    going to find you. You have to go out and take it. Make it a priority to drownyourself in passionate people, and theyll come out of the woodwork.

    While on the boat, I spent some fun time with Keith Ferrazzi, Chief RelationshipBuilder and bestselling author of Never Eat Alone , one of my top five practical/powerful books of all time. This guy embodies what he preaches in a way like no

    other.

    He and the whole ship taught and reminded me of some things that have beenon my mind for a while.

    You absolutely must surround yourself with passion. Here are some ideas onmaking connections...

    HOW TO SURROUND YOURSELF WITH PASSIONATE PEOPL1. Relationships give you permission to tell your story and have your dreamscome alive. The more people you meet, the more you can change the world,both through helping others and spreading your big ideas.

    2. Ask someone to tell their story. Everyone is dying to get their message outto the world; they just might not know it. Give them permission, get presentand simply listen.

    3. Be genuine and vulnerable Get deep. When meeting someone, lead withintimacy. Humanize it! Dont rattle off how great you are and all the thingsyouve done. Bragging will only distance yourself. Be humble. Tell them thescary story of what shaped your life and what got you here. Were you abused asa child, grew up without a mother or witnessed a debilitating disease in a lovedone? We all have defining personal moments in our life. Connect with peopleon that level.

    4. Walk into a room and see friends, not strangers. I dont care if you dontrecognize a single face in the room. Adopt the belief that these people all wantto connect as much as you do. Because its true. Walk up and see how you canhelp. See friends, and friends they will become.

    5. Be a host at your own party. My wife, Chelsea, and I host dinner partiesevery month for between two and 10+ of our friends. We try to invite groupswho dont know one another so we can create new connections. When youre a

    host you do everything you can to make them feel welcome. Do this with thoseclose to you and those you want to be close. Make it fun and sit strangers nextto each other.

    6. Be a host at everyone elses party. Being a host at your own home is agiven. What about every other party you go to? The job of a host is to make

    others feel welcome and accommodated. Why only do this in your own home?Look at every interaction as a chance to be a host. Ask how can I help you?Have fun with it.

    7. Fire people who dont contribute to the dream. Our peer group is ourchoice. Choose wisely. We all have people who put us down or dont believe inour ideas. They suck energy and diminish our potential. Who says you have tobe around them? You dont, so stop acting like you do. Take the 80/20 Rule toyour relationships. Passion is too fragile and much too valuable. Increase yourodds of finding it and remove the chance of killing it.

    8. Repair bad connections. For whatever reason, there are people in our liveswe cannot get away from, who seem to be out to get us. Kill them withkindness. Sack up, be the bigger person and do the following: first, feel theirpaintry to empathize and somehow see their side; second, be complementarytell them what you respect about them. You can always find something. Relateto them. Do this often enough and most people will stop treating you like sh*t.Often theyll actually become extremely close to you because youre the firstone who helped them through their insecurity.

    9. Choose to care about someone. The easiest way to get you to care aboutme is for me to care about you. The golden rule in reverse. Bust your ass to helpthose around you. Simple enough.

    10. Spend routine quality time. Notice the life-changers you come across. Itmay be the shop owner down the street, your mother, long lost friend or yourfavorite author. Write them into your story. Set up group dinners, cook for them,

    plan a trip to the amusement park or rent out a paintball field (my close buddiesand I recently did this for a whopping $45/person for four hours of unreal primalfun!).

    Get lost in conversation for hours. Make these interactions a weekly routine.Theres nothing more important. When you find someone new and interesting,

    see what you can invite them to right away that will make them feel a part ofyour life. They wont forget it.

    11. Find your things in town Your tribe. Make this a priority. Some hugeblowout on a boat is just one of the unlimited options available. There are like-minded folks like you all over your town. I dont care what youre into or where

    you live. This is one of the Internets best use cases. Search out those groups.Check Craigslist, MeetUp, coffee shop bulletin boards, Chamber of Commerce,Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn. If you overhear someone at lunch mentionsomething interesting, dont be afraid to ask whats up. Its worth it, for both ofyou.

    LIFE SUCKS ALONEExperiences, accomplishments and success dont mean much of anything ifyoure alone at home with no one to celebrate. They are also much less likely tohappen. What makes going to a restaurant, bar or new place so much fun? Forthe most part its the people either the ones you know or the ones you meet.Be intentional about nurturing these relationships. Stay genuine. We all coulduse the extra passion.

    If you dont currently have a resource full of passionate, inspiring people, thencreate it. It starts with the people you spend most of your time with, then moveoutwards. You can start by joining our community at Live Your Legend if youhaven't already.

    Without this support youll likely never do the ground-breaking things yourehere to do. Its the biggest reason people dont leap. People around them thinktheyre crazy and before you know it, you think youre crazy too. All of a sudden

    youre back to doing what everyone else is doing.The hell with them!

    BRAINWASH THE IMPOSSIBLEThose who think somethings impossible generally dont spend enough timearound crazy people who know it can be done. More on this in the next section.

    We should all be insane enough to think things can be differentthat they can

    be better. Put all those crazy people together, and suddenly everyones doingimpossible things. Thats exactly why Ive partnered with the charityimpossible2Possible helping kids do things most adults couldnt fathom.

    Most people I came across on the boat were on their first, second or thirdstartup, often after selling the ones prior. For them business and passionatework are not a means for making a living, but simply a way of life. These peoplethrive off the impossible.

    I used to think entrepreneurship was unattainable. It was too hard to start abusiness. Thats what authority always told me. Then I started hanging out withentrepreneurs. Being well into my third successful business, I now see no otherway.

    Create a network people dream of

    Welcome the challenge.

    You can have it. You just have to cultivate it. Surround yourself with people wholight you on fire. You will fuel one another and your world will change.

    Passionate People alter your reality.

    At around 6:15 on Saturday evening, Shai Agassi addressed a group of us onthe boat. A few years ago Shai founded Better Place , an electric car companyaimed at eliminating the gasoline engine and with it the worlds dependency onoil. In 2008 he was laughed at for his ridiculous vision.

    Then he went out and raised $200m to make it a reality. Yes, thats milliononeof the largest and fastest seed raises in history. To date, he has raised over$700m and has rolled his fully operational electric car network out to all ofDenmark and Israel. It actually works and is much cheaper than gas. He couldoutfit the entire United States for what the U.S. spends on gasoline in oneweek. I remember hearing about this project three years ago and I thought hewas crazy. Good thing he disagreed.

    At the end of his talk he told us the following:

    Everyone of you is Clark Kent. Youre Superman and donteven know it. You all have at least 5 or 10 companies in you. Do the world justice. Be ready when you sell your

    business or decide its time to move on. Go up a very tallbuilding and jump. Its easyjust miss the ground.

    The world is run off personal relationships. They fuel our passion and make theunthinkable possible. I dont care what business youre in or what problemyoure trying to solve. It can only happen by surrounding yourself with the rightpeople who believe insane things can be done. Without that support, werenowhere.

    Whether you know it or not, you all hold me to a higher standard.

    I plan to live up to it.
