OLLI Friends Fund Announces a New

Gift

Former OLLI Leadership Council presidents Bill Roberts and Fran Weinstein are so grateful for OLLI’s impact on their lives that they wanted to do something to give back. Thus was created the Friends of OLLI Endowment Fund, which will help make sure OLLI continues to enrich the lives of others well into the future. They each made a major pledge of $25,000 to kick off the Fund. “The friendships I’ve made at OLLI have truly contributed to the sustainability of my life and led me to set this fund up,” Bill said. “The personal connections I’ve made at OLLI and the events I go to every week moved me to do this.” Long-time OLLI member Harriet Selin agrees, and recently added her contribution of $10,000 to the Friends of OLLI Fund. Harriet has enjoyed OLLI since its Learning in Retirement days, and joined its curriculum committee when asked by then OLLI employee Sheila Silver. Harriet shared that “OLLI is very important to her,

and she felt strongly that a gift to ensure that OLLI is sustainable into the future is also very important.” OLLI members will soon receive a letter for annual sustainability in May, which goes towards OLLI’s annual operating expenses. Gifts to the endowment fund will help sustain OLLI into the future and now gives OLLI members a second way to support OLLI. “OLLI has encouraged me to grow in a way that I never had to do in my regular work life,” Fran says. “OLLI represents the essence of life--that we can grow, change, and be challenged in new ways as we age. OLLI is different because it is created by its members.” For more information or to give, please contact Lisa Barton, OLLI Director at 734-761-2540.

OLLI Volunteer Spotlight A Multifaceted Volunteer – From

Climate Change to “Mr. Chocolate”by Gerry Lapidus, OLLI Volunteer

Syd Kaufman likes the learning experiences and opportunities to meet new people that OLLI provides. It also gives him a way to make significant contributions. Since joining in 2008, he has been an instructor, a student and a committee member. Syd says: “Volunteering is perhaps the wrong word; participating is somewhat better.” He currently participates in both the Lectures and the Study Group Committees. In this OLLI semester, Syd also leads a chocolate tasting study group and the Mystery Book Club. The Mr. Chocolate title comes from the many study groups he has conducted on the making and tasting of chocolate treats. He also led classes on brain health, weather, and climate change. The Lecture Committee plans and administers the Thursday morning Lecture series. Besides working on planning, Syd enlisted and introduced speakers for the Supreme Court and Russia lecture series in the 2016 and 2017 period. “In both these instances I got to know the speakers far better than I’d otherwise, an opportunity only made possible by volunteering... definitely a big plus.”

These days, Syd continues his research in chocolate making.

The Study Group Committee plans, evaluates and helps implement the wide array of OLLI study group offerings. Syd assembled and edited the Instructor’s Manual and a Course Vetting Manual. He also serves on the Science subcommittee, which seeks new subjects for classes, reviews course proposals and vets new instructors for study groups. Syd has a Ph.D. in Metallurgy from Carnegie-Mellon University and has spent 28 years at Ford Motor Company’s Research Lab. He also taught undergraduate courses at U of M Dearborn and undergraduate and graduate courses at Wayne State University. After leaving Ford, Syd started a recycling company based on a patent he holds, where he worked for six years. Later, he retired as a consultant in metal recycling.

OLLI Lives Well Lived Greetings from Helen Hill

When Eleanor Linn was in California recently, she stopped in to see our OLLI friend, Helen Hill. Helen Hill, who led OLLI’s popular writing group, Memoirs and Personal Essays from 1993 to 2014, asked that we say hello to both the long-time OLLI people she knows and to newer members whom she has not met. Helen moved to San Diego in late 2014, a few months before celebrating her 100th birthday. She now lives in a four-gener-ation household with daughter Rebecca and Rebecca’s partner Dann, granddaughter Dorothea, great-granddaughter Sophie (age 13) and pet guinea pigs Phèdre and Penelope. Their sun-filled house sits at the edge of a cliff with a commanding view of the southern California landscape. She also has two sons, a grandson, and two great-grandsons in the area. Although Helen says that she has slowed down in her second - or is it her third? - retirement, having been Professor of English at Eastern Michigan University, and co-founded the Washtenaw County chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) and its Trailblazers clubhouse, she gets around quite

well in a motorized wheelchair. Rebecca reads her the New York Times every morning at breakfast, since her vision is getting worse. After dinner and the PBS News Hour, they read whatever happens to be of interest at the moment: memoirs, novels, non-fiction, plus the New Yorker every week. They are also co-knitting squares for an afghan that will be a surprise gift for young friends who hope to marry next year. Helen continues to read essays sent by students in the class, which Eleanor Linn, a former participant, now leads. Her comments remain astute and constructive. We’re so glad to know that Helen has again retired successfully, but hardly withdrawn from active life.

OLLI Lives Well Lived Spotlight on Study Group Instructor Joy Rome Former OLLI Program Director Ann Tai reached out to Joy Rome in 2004 hoping that Joy would consider teaching a writing class for OLLI. Joy stepped forward with an interest in offering an opportunity where writers could workshop their work and improve it in an atmosphere that fostered honest input from fellow OLLI writers. Joy said this format worked well. Writers Unlimited was born, and continues to this day. Joy was a Senior Lecturer in Communication Studies at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa, and brought 23 years of writing experience to OLLI. Joy shared that former OLLI student Phil Zaret challenged the group to write more dialog, which Joy said many did and continue to do. Mary Fancher, who has been a long-time student in this study group shared that she has read everything that others wrote, and that even if you didn’t have anything to contribute at times you always learned so much about writing. All felt that Writers Unlimited is an informative group in that it offers textbook criticism like creative writing. Joy said the highlight of the class has been the variety of

writing the students share including novels, poetry, short stories, and memoirs. Members present during our interview included students Jerry Janusz who joined the group in 2008 and Don Skiff in April of 2010. Jerry shared that there was an urgency in keeping the group going because it has been such a pleasure for him to be a part of it. He recently agreed to lead the group when Joy decided to step down as the instructor and continue as a member. It was obvious to us how much the group has meant to the students we were fortunate enough to speak with. If you’d like to read Joy’s poem The Ballad of LIR/OLLI, written for OLLI’s 25th anniver-sary celebration, let us know and we’d be happy to send you a copy.Interviewed by Lisa Barton and Julie Haines, OLLI staff

150 OLLI members gathered on a very cold January day to celebrate OLLI’s 30th year, share the warmth of friends, and hear about upcoming winter/spring programming. OLLI Leadership Council President Craig Ramsay served as Emcee for the event, welcoming OLLI’s program chairs who highlighted upcoming events and introducing OLLI’s new Associate Director of Social Work and Community Programs, Nina Abney. Delicious food by the WCC culinary staff was enjoyed by all. OLLI’s Social Interaction Committee set up displays of OLLI through the years, which highlighted warm memories of OLLI members and events during the last three decades. Creative work was shared from OLLI’s Monday Painters and from several of OLLI’s writing groups, including several published works. And those cakes! Stay tuned for further celebration and sharing of our past, including at OLLI’s Fall September 6th kickoff.

News Update from your OLLI-UM Study Group Committee

Growth in OLLI membership (a good thing) has caused your Study Group Committee to work even harder to create more cours-es you will enjoy. We are not only welcoming proposals from our members (still the core of our offerings), but we are also looking outside our membership to find people capable of leading classes. Recent examples have included UM grad students and journalists coming to Ann Arbor as part of the Knight Wallace Fellowship program. Our ‘net’ also includes interesting people in our community that we tap to lead After Five sessions. Please let us know if you have good contacts for us to pursue. The Committee is now processing course proposals throughout the year. No need to wait for the deadline for the Fall 2018 - May 14, 2018 -get your proposals in as early as possible.

The Committee is seeking assistance with processing course quality surveys. Only a few hours per week is required, and you can work from home. Contact OLLI Assistant Director Ben Richards in the OLLI office if you can help (734 998-9357). And as always, we are welcoming new members to our Study Group Committee. It is a great group of people with a passion for adult learning. To make your entry to our Study Group as easy as possible, we have just completed creating a “Study Group Committee Guide” that describes all our process-es. The committee meets on the fourth Friday of each month, from 9:30-11:30 am, usually at TSRC. Contact Stu Simon, Study Group Committee Chair, for further information [[email protected], 734 429 5935].

OLLI is looking for volunteers to help plan trips, study groups, lectures, and After Five events. Please contact the office for more details and if you are interested in volunteering - 734-998-9357.

Join us for lunch!OLLI offers a post lecture luncheon every series. Please join us for the next one on May 24th. For more information, please see our website or call 734-998-9351.

Highlights of a Day in Chelsea, MIby Ruth Primas, OLLI Out of Town Chair

On the morning of March 7th, a group of 34 OLLI members decided to address their “cabin fever” and boarded a bus to Chel-sea, MI. Their first stop was at the Chelsea Milling Company, home to JIFFY Mix products, for a tour of its facilities and operations. Most of the company’s products are produced in-house, which includes grain storage, the grinding of grains into flour, product mixing, and box manufacturing. An outstanding fact regarding the company is its production of over 1 million boxes of its products each day.

The next stop on the tour was the Common Grill restaurant, where we were presented with a menu of five delicious lunch entrees

from which to choose. The leisurely lunch was thoroughly enjoyed. Because of the proximity of the Common Grill to the Purple Rose Theater, we were able to walk to the theater. We saw a performance of “FLINT” written by Jeff Daniels. The play dealt with the harsh realities of the current conditions in Flint regarding unemployment, the

water crisis, and racial tensions. A “talkback” was arranged following the play especially for the OLLI attendees.

This provided a unique opportunity

for actors to respond to our mem-bers’ questions regarding what it takes to provide such an emotional and thought-provoking performance. In response to the question on the survey following this trip regarding suggestions the participants have for future OLLI trips, a response was “Make them resemble this one!” The OLLI Out of Town Committee accepts the challenge. John Paul Knapp died at age 85 from Alzheimer’s disease. According to his wishes, his body has been donated to the U-M Medical School for Alzheimer’s research. John was born in Tiffin, Ohio, served in the Army during the Korean War, and earned a BA and MA in English from Mi-ami University. At the U of Kansas, he was a teaching assistant and studied 18th century English literature. Before coming to Ann Arbor, John taught at Kent State University and was there at the time of the shooting in May 1970. John came to Ann Arbor in 1971, and worked in the consumer education field until the late 90s. He was director of the Consumer

in memoriAmAction Center, writing a weekly consumer column for the Ann Arbor News, consult-ing for EMU, and winning the Philip A. Hart Award for his work in the consumer field. Starting in the ’90s at

U-M LIR, John, and his wife Janet, organized “Perspectives on WWII” (part of the Thursday Morning Lecture Series), arranging for 20 OLLI members to report on their WWII experiences. They also organized a retreat at Michigania for LIR volunteers. John was a long term member of two OLLI groups: Nancy Major’s Opera Study Group and the Short Story Group. Last year John donated over 500 LPS to the AA District Library, which is re-viving its Classical vinyl collection.

Marlin P.Ristenbatt died in Ann Arbor at age 89. He is survived by his wife Dorothy (Rickard) Ristenbatt, his son and daughter-in-law, two grandchildren, extended family, and dear friends. Marlin was born and raised in Leb-anon County, Pennsylvania where, accompanied by his brother on the accordion, he played the trumpet at church services and swing music celebrations. Marlin played the trumpet in the Army band, greeting soldiers as they passed through San Francisco. He attended Penn State, graduating second in his class in Electrical Engineering, and first chair in the marching Blue Band.

Marlin earned his Ph.D. at University of Michigan where he worked for the next 20 years, passionately promoting Electri-cal Engineering. Marlin wrote articles and technical reports, and chaired many Engineering Sum-

mer Conferences. He was awarded the IEEE/USAB Citation of Honor for “outstanding contribution …of national professional activities.” Marlin loved being physically active. He was a hot air balloon pilot, biked to work every day, and played a weekly volleyball game for over 50 years. An avid reader, Marlin attended and chaired many discussions and courses with OLLI, always thirsting for knowledge regarding the human experience.
