Living Artists Emporium was established to develop emerging artists via a sustainable project space that provides materials, workspaces, events, exhibition outlets and resources. Lack of resources, guidance and artistic direction are all factors emerging artists are facing today. Living Artists Emporium (LAE) is addressing these challenges by supplying the necessary infrastructure, guidance and tools to enable emerging artists to create cutting edge contemporary art and build their careers. Our slogan “Breaking the rules of art” is against the grain of the norm. Today there are so many new and diverse ways of artistic expression that we asked the question of what the rules of art are and who is making them? We decided to follow our own path by pushing the boundaries and will break any supposedly rule of art that is prescribed to us. With this platform LAE is creating new ground in the art industry by offering high quality contemporary art as an investment for the future and to make art accessible to all. Our artists are becoming the stars of tomorrow!

Danisile Njoli Artistic Statement

I am an artist, a lover, a dreamer, a fighter and a seeker. I have a keen vision and feeling of all ordinary human life, particular what lies beneath our souls and is inspired by design ideas, innovations and lifestyle.

My creation process is spontaneous, semi- realistic combined with a conceptual abstract component.

The use of charcoal, acrylic and mixed medium is the tools that I use to capture the emotions of my subjects with the motive to uplift the viewer’s mood with wild and vibrant strokes of colour and texture.

My choice of subject matter in my body or works is the women (the mothers) and children (the future of tomorrow) of our society.

Jean Du Plessis

“The pictorial language is the physical trace of my artistic ego and thus the abstract gesture

becomes the metaphor for my isolated searching as individual…TO PAINT NOT THE THING

BUT THE EMOTIONAL EFFECT IT PROVIDES, MY INDIVIDUALISM IS THE CENTRAL

PROTAGONIST IN THIS BODY OF WORK "

Du Plessis also encourages individual interpretation, despite the pieces being inspired by his

personal experiences. Bold large-scale mixed media works on canvas and paper supplement

DIEZEL Artistic Statement

Diezel uses art to ask questions about South African Culture and the social and political situation in South Africa. The collection was done in an “AfroPop” style and the influence of the Pop Artists of the Sixties, such as Jean-MicheI Basquiat and Roy Lichtenstein is obvious in the works.

Throughout the collection Diezel incorporates bright colours, scribbles and writing to comment on the 'high voltage' existence in Africa.

The works include ideas about the complexities of a muIti-cuIturaI existence within South African society, its history, the political situation and the varied belief systems of the different groups.

Diezel uses symbols, scribbles and writing in most of the works to communicate ideas and the spirit of Africa. Stars are 'lucky', plus (+) signs are signs of hope and optimism and hearts represent a love of country. Colours and drips symboIize Iife 'experience' and how it influences the subjects view of the world.

Diezel is a member of The Superstroke Art Movement, founded by fellow South African artist Conrad Bo. Superstroke was born in Africa and is symbolic of its energy, the good and the bad, bloodshed, corruption. oppression and pain, but also of beauty, optimism and hope.

All Superstroke artists mark their works with plus signs (+)

Teboho Makoatsa Artist Statement

As a painter and photographer, I find inspiration in the existence of people held close for

reflection. I engage a personal expression of solid marks and living imagery to express the

beauty and innocence of everyday life in South Africa. Within this territory, my work varies from

representational to abstract, and I am continuously moving along the contrast between the two.

I tend to work in series, either in regard to the exploration of a particular image or the materials

used in creating my works.I am exploring the dialogue between Photography and Painting, with

a seasonal aspect related to my travels, connections and experiences with my subject matters.

Khotso Kupi

"ART AMOUNTS TO THE LIBERTY OF ALL CHILDREN" I am a painter, a naturalist and a creative artist. In a painting I enjoy creating visual clues, recycling and attempting to discover the artist in me. In the year 2017 "Caturism" was first introduced with the visual arts platform of the Living Artist Emporium. "Caturism" explores the use of lines as a basic function; it is a painting technique where the natural structure of a subject is broken down and emphasised as lines. Form is simplified and reduced to its simplest components. The broken lines connect content or simply stress structure. Colour is less important, but can appear symbolic or representational. Space is depicted by shaped areas of colour and texture. My technique was first influenced by the works of Richard Scott, Ayanda Nkosi and a technique developed by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. My later work is inspired by the Impressionists, De Stijl artists and German Expressionism.

Siyabonga Mlambi Siyabonga was born in the small town of Bizana located in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa.

Almost love at first sight, Siyabonga became smitten with art as a child and by the time he finished high school it was full-blown love affair. In college he studied Art & Design and he focused his attention on nature and various colour palettes. Upon graduating, his mediums of choice became acrylic, fabric, stones, grass, ink and graphite.

As his artistic skill-set matured, he began experimenting with various methods and techniques, which ultimately lead him to discover his signature style identified as Superblur African Synthetic Cubism / Circlelism. The style’s aim is to entertain the viewer with beauty and desire that the eye cannot see but only the heart can feel. Similarly to the way we interpret music subconsciously that has touched our lives in ways that became forever memorable.

In his own words "My work stems from observation while problem solving. I look to do it in a way that is honest and from a distance. My influences explore the idea of changing lives in the world through meaningful messages and stories of everyday happenings. I am also a poet , therefore no matter if I'm being artistic through mixed media or words, I hope to convey a message of love that hits the heart and spirit of all that I encounter".

Vincent Mbeje Artistic statement

Vincent’s journey has led him from Kwazulu Natal to Soweto. He describes himself as an “artist in training”. He uses bright colours and paints mostly in Barcode – one of the signature features of the Superblur Movement.

The Barcode in Superblur originated from the concept that in today’s world, everything seems to be barcoded – products on supermarket shelves, ID cards and documents, student cards, library cards etc. The initial barcodes were a machine-readable system of parallel lines of varying widths and spacing and this is reflected in Vincent’s work. He also uses bright colours to express his feelings.

Vincent’s colourful Barcode paintings brighten up the place – quite in contrast to the traditional black and white barcode found on consumer goods.

Splash Motong 120cm x 160cm Mixed medium on canvas R19 900

Splash Motong Artistic statement

As a qualified fashion designer my keen interest in art was inevitable. Being born and bred in the biggest township in South Africa-Soweto, my keen inspiration has always been influenced by the vibrant & colourful lifestyle that Soweto offers.

Soweto has always influenced the country through politics, sports, music and culture. It is also the only place on earth with two Nobel Prize winners which is Dr Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu.

My style of painting is heavily inspired by the broad contrast and living activities of township life, without Johannesburg city Soweto wouldn’t exist so I’m compelled to portray the Highveld of Jo’burg skyline with its tall skyscrapers & colourful sunrises and sunsets.

My work borrows a lot of elements from fashion design as I use heavy texture, colourful tones, intrigue patterns & multiple perspectives to achieve depth & dimension. The type of brush strokes I use vary from expressive, impressive & fine painting depending on the mood and energy of painting technique I’m trying to achieve.

I use an array of materials not limited to sand, stones, grass mixed with acrylic gel to create heavy thick texture. The colours are achieved by combining acrylic, ink, oil, pastel & paper-collage to create a mixed medium affect which the multi-faceted lifestyle of urban township and metropolitan city lifestyle.

Yiull Yiull Damaso is well known for his multiple Nelson Mandela portrait series. The first to stir controversy was the ‘Dreaded Madiba’ and the most noteworthy was his critically acclaimed work titled ‘The Night Watch!’ which was exhibited at Constitution Hill

Much of Yiull’s early work was created in public spaces. He was commissioned for murals in Cape Town, Johannesburg, London and San Francisco and in 2000, Yiull was named South Africa’s top muralist and Nelson Mandela’s unofficial portraitist by art critic Hazel Friedman of the Cape Argus.

Since then Yiull has shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions across the country, including at the Oudtshoorn Arts Festival and The Fridge in Braamfontein. In 2011, his solo show at Constitution Hill was opened by Professor Pitika Ntuli show casing “The Night Watch!”. In 2012, Yiull completed a three-month residency at Vladimir Tretchikoff’s old studio, Light from Africa – Art in the Forest, in Cape Town.

With Nelson Mandela as his muse for many years, Yiull has been featured in the Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, BBC, CNN and was the focus of three documentaries: German TV, Wits Film School and University of Tshwane Art & Film School.

His work features prominently in the private collections of South African mogul Douw Stein and Bill Du Toit, among others. He has been commissioned for a range of works by The One and Only Royal Mirage Hotel in Dubai, the Royal Livingston Hotel in Zambia, DC Comics, Marvel Comics, Smirnoff, Pirelli, Swatch and Elliot Mobility.

Yiull’s recent work features his own rusting technique, which consists of iron and copper filings suspended in an acrylic medium and washed with various acids to create a rusting effect on canvas and other mediums. He has often used this process to add to the social commentary his work speaks of; the rust works are visually appealing, yet on closer inspection are made up of decaying minerals. Yiull is using this technique in both his current body of work as commentary of the underlying rot of bureaucratic systems in the world.

Since 2013, Yiull has been working, curating and hosting exhibitions from his own studio in Craighall Park, Johannesburg, with artists Gordon Froud, George Holloway, John Vlismas , Loyiso Mkize, Lekau Matsena, Zapiro, Dov Fedlar and Derek Bauer to name a few.

Creating art that speaks to an universal audience that doesn’t conform to any gender, race, religion, culture and colour.

Blending mark making and gestures in a chaotic manner that cannot be controlled that allows the viewer to deduce the mayhem and harmony in their own way.

Mbongeni Mhlongo

Artistic Statement

Born in KZN and always had passion for art. I started art at an informal art school which was at the Durban Workshop. After that I enrolled for a full Diploma course in ML Sultan Technikon.

PHILOSOPHY

Art to me is like revealing layers of life that give us a reason and a purpose to live. The ideas in my mind charge me to create and produce. I believe that this is a force which is primarily the fuel in all areas of production. Therefore the source of my ideas is life, and my hope is that the viewer can feel, hear and enjoy the end-result.

SUBJECT

I am interested in expressing action, mood and even the rhythm if it is a musical scene to engage the viewer into the life of my paintings. The body of my work is largely figures, evolving from abstract images to recognisable elements using vibrant colours, texture and 3d effects.

Andrew Ntshabele

Artistic Statement

My interest in the city of Johannesburg developed out of the fact that it is the city that I have grown up in since the age of four. I have had the pleasure of witnessing South Africa’s first democratic votes in 1994, and seeing Johannesburg’s transformation from the early nineties, mid-nineties to the present. I still live in Johannesburg and am confronted by poverty, pollution, and urban decay every day of my life.

I have seen the effects that urbanisation has had on the city of Johannesburg in relation to its physical change, socio-economic and political change post-apartheid. My areas of interest are the people who live in the inner city and the environment within the inner city.

My work deals with the negative effects of rapid urbanisation in Johannesburg and the pressures and the strains of the people I encounter and interact with on a daily basis as we go about our business. Based on my encounters with these people I felt the need to investigate the social predicament of my city and understand the root causes of the current inner city decay.

My work is a form of social commentary and deals with the socio-economic challenges that the majority of black South Africans face in post-colonial South Africa. My focal subject matter is rapid urbanisation in the inner city of Johannesburg and the pollution and rubbish among which the inner city residents live. My paintings incorporate more than one medium as they are a fusion of collage and acrylic paint. My works are produced from actual photographs that I take on my daily travels around the inner city of Johannesburg and its outskirts.

Greatjoy Ndlovu Artistic Statement

My paintings take a critical view on different facial behaviours and expressions. From primary to secondary school and until today, the only class I really paid any attention to was Art. I think my obsession with depicting the monotony of the work place and work force started there.

I am constantly sketching and sometimes these sketches develop into more in-depth ideas and expressive images.

While I work with a variety of materials and processes, my methodology remain consistent in each project. Although there may not always be material similarities between the different projects, they are linked by recurring formal concerns and subject matter. The subject matter of each body of work determines the materials and forms of the work.

During research and production, new areas of interest arise and lead to the next body of work. I usually love to use bright colours to show different methods.
