4 Ways to Stay Fit and Healthy on Your Next Trip

OC TOBER 2019 • CUSTOMER NE WSLE T TER2

Whether you’re planning a quick weekend getaway to visit family, a trip overseas, or a “staycation”, time off is important to your overall wellbeing. A holiday is a chance to reset your brain and connect more deeply with friends, loved ones, and even yourself.

Here are a few tips for incorporating physical activity and healthy nutrition on your next trip:

1. Schedule workouts during the day. Whether it’s a quick trip to the hotel gym before sightseeing or a simple workout before bed, make time to get some exercise. Or you can make exercise a part of your trip – rent some bikes, take a hike or go for a swim.

2. Find new healthy food options. Restaurant apps make it easy to seek out healthy local food. You can also hit the grocery store to experiment with snacks – maybe there are some fascinating new fruits and vegetables you can’t get at home.

3. Get lots of rest and de-stressSchedule time to rejuvenate, get extra sleep and have a relaxing soak in the bath. True relaxation and meditation can positively enhance your overall feeling of wellness and boost your results. You may even find that the extra “me” time helps you to get past an exercise plateau, because rest is such an important part of your fitness journey.

4. Don’t use excuses. When you’re planning your next trip, spend some time looking for healthy food and activities in advance. If you put in the effort, you can always find a healthy meal option near you and find time to squeeze in some form of physical activity.

Dr. Dana Ryan, Ph.D., MBA, M.A. – Director of Sports Performance and Education, recently spent time in Sydney with the Western Sydney Wanderers. Dr. Ryan met with WSW Dieticians, Nutritionists, Strength & Conditioning Coach and staff discuss sports nutrition and how to best incorporate the Herbalife24 products into the players lives, on and off the field.

“It’s a really critical part of, not just day-to-day performance, but how an athlete is going to perform in the long term. We’re talking about the nutrients that fuel your body. I think players are starting to understand more and more the role that nutrition has in the game,” Dr. Dana Ryan to The World Game, SBS

“One of the sayings is that ‘abs are made in the kitchen’, so what you are putting in to fuel yourself is equally as important to how you are actually training your body.”

Dr. Dana Ryan visited the WSW new gym facility and helped create a ‘Herbalife Nutrition Station’ that is easily accessible by every player before, during and after

their training sessions. Dr. Ryan puts great importance on routine, she says that giving players product that is readily available and accessible is important to help

them consume their nutrition at the right times each day.

Many consumers are aware of a nutrition label, but reading it correctly is important to understand your actual intake. An accurate read requires an understanding of the difference between a serving and a portion. A serving of food is the official amount that is listed on the label, while a portion is the amount that you actually eat.

Nutrition Facts Label Step 1: Portion SizeMany people assume, often incorrectly, that small packages of cookies, crackers or chips, or moderately sized beverage containers are single servings. But that isn’t always the case.

The current official serving size of a beverage is about 250mL. Many drinks come in larger cans and bottles, which might contain two or

more servings. If you guzzle a 500 ml bottle of sweetened iced tea, you’ll need to double all the information on the nutrition facts panel (i.e. calories and the sugar content).

Similarly, a serving of potato chips is 30g, which is only about 15 chips. If you’re eating out of a large bag, you may eat several servings. You’ll need to count the amount of chips or measure your servings to determine your total consumption.

Page 5: LIVING HEALTHIER AND HAPPIER - Herbalife...Herbalife Nutrition Independent Members, and those in attendance enjoyed afternoon tea and a tour of the facility to learn more about the

5

Nutrition Facts Label Step 2: Nutrients, Cholesterol and FibreYou can also find amounts for protein, fat and carbohydrate, sugar, fibre, cholesterol, and sodium content provided on a per-serving basis. To understand your nutrient intake, you need to know or closely approximate your serving intake.

The total carbohydrate listed includes all forms of carbohydrate – starch, sugar and fibre. The listing for sugar includes both added sugars, as well as naturally occurring sugars (such as in fruit). Due to this, it’s not always easy to tell where the sugar is coming from without looking at the ingredients list.

Fats can be divided up into two broad categories: saturated (unhealthy fats) and unsaturated (beneficial fats). Of the two, the unsaturated fats are considered better for you, since these fats are derived primarily from plant foods and can help to keep blood cholesterol levels within a normal range.

Nutrition Facts Label Step 3: % Daily IntakeYou may see a column with “% Daily Intake, or %DI.” These are standard recommended levels of intake for various nutrients, established by the Food Standards Code ANZ for use on food labels. The information in this column tells you what percentage of the recommended intake for each nutrient is found in a serving of food. These values are based on an 8700 kJ (or 2,080 calorie) diet per day, which means they may not apply to everyone. If this calorie intake does not apply to you, you can still use the % DI to see if a particular food is high or low in a nutrient.

Nutrition Facts Labels – Comparing Similar Foods Can Be TrickyReading a label is fairly straightforward, but it all comes back to the serving sizes. We suggest examining your serving sizes closely, especially if you’re comparing the nutrition facts among similar foods.

Certain similar foods may have different weight and density, such as cereals, like puffed cereal versus muesli. Each brand or “type”

may have portion sizes and weights measured differently. For example, muesli is much more dense and has nearly 13 times more calories than puffed wheat, meaning that the two cereals will have different serving sizes. Since most of us pour ourselves “a bowl” of cereal, what really matters is how big your portion is. If you always pour the same volume of cereal into your bowl – whether it’s muesli or puffed wheat – check your portion size.

Nutrition Facts Labels Bottom Line: Know Your Portions and Compare to ServingsThe bottom line is this: the nutrition facts label can help you make better consumption choices – as long as you are able to compare the amounts of food you are actually eating to the serving sizes that are listed on the package.

Weigh and measure your foods with a scale and measuring cups for a while until you get good at “eyeballing” your own portions. Keeping track of your calories won’t do you much good if you don’t know how much you’re really eating.

Harold the Giraffe and Life Education NZ visit schools across New Zealand to empower over 250,000 children each year to make healthy choices by educating them about their body, friendships, their identity, food and nutrition, as well as helpful and harmful substances.

Lighthouse Foundation Home Gets a Member Makeover

The Lighthouse Foundation maintain properties that enable them to provide formerly homeless youth with a home and family environment as part of their support programs. Herbalife Nutrition Independent Members spent a day transforming Lighthouse Foundation’s ‘Baronia Home’ inside and out. They weeded the garden, cleaned the house and filled a skip with excess waste. Their work was all in preparation for the renovation of Baronia Home’s kitchen as part of a Herbalife Nutrition Foundation funded project.

Members see Life Education in Action!Herbalife Nutrition Independent members enjoyed attending education sessions conducted by Life Education Trust New Zealand in their mobile classrooms, stationed at a range of schools across the North and South Islands.

Members gained first-hand experience of the positive impact of Life Education’s programs for primary school-aged children. They were particularly impressed with the skillful way information is passed on by educators through easily understood, age-appropriate

language and stories. These programs support children to improve their health, wellbeing, and helps them become good citizens in the community.

The Herbalife Nutrition Foundation is a global not-for-profit foundation dedicated to improving the lives of children around the world by helping organisations provide healthy nutrition to children at risk. A group of keen Herbalife Nutrition Independent Members and staff joined Sunshine Butterflies as they opened a new undercover cooking area on their Noosaville property to coincide with Disability Action Week in Queensland.

Grant funding is made possible due to the fundraising efforts of Herbalife Nutrition Independent Members, and those in attendance enjoyed afternoon tea and a tour of the facility to learn more about the organisation’s important work. The visit culminated in presentation of a cheque for $100,000 and ribbon cutting ceremony to officially open the new ‘Social Kitchen.’ Funding enabled construction of the new deck and kitchen, which has a variety of cooking stations that will provide supported nutrition, cooking and social programs for young people with disabilities. Additionally, the grant will support Sunshine Butterflies’ ongoing cooking and nutrition education program, the Farmyard Cooking School.

“We pride ourselves on helping people to live healthier lives, which is why we continue to support Casa

Herbalife Nutrition partners, such as Sunshine Butterflies, which are helping us deliver on that promise,” said Peter Hurley, General Manager, Herbalife Nutrition Australia and New Zealand.

Sunshine Butterflies’ Founder and CEO Leanne Walsh stated the organisation was overwhelmed to receive such a generous donation. “We are blown away by the support that the Herbalife Nutrition Foundation have shown us over the last two years,” she said.

“This space will allow us to expand on the current cooking program, and will focus on providing nutrition education to a greater number of people of all ages living with a disability, as well as children within the local community. We are so thrilled to officially open this facility today,” said Leanne.

Herbalife Nutrition Independent Members’ also generously donated boxes of art supplies in support of Sunshine Butterflies’ weekly arts and crafts activities.

 50g Herbalife24 Rebuild Strength

 12g Personalised Protein Powder

 75g gluten-free f lour

 15g cocoa powder

 1 orange

 100g unsweetened apple sauce

 1 teaspoon baking powder

For the frosting:

 1 r ipe avocado

 Juice of 1 orange

 ½ serving (13g) Formula 1 Chocolate

 12g Personalised Protein Powder

 25g cocoa powder

20ml water to thin if required

This cake is an amazing harmony of two lovely flavours; chocolate and orange, whilst being high in protein.

Preheat oven to 180° C. Zest the orange then remove and discard peel. Blend the peeled orange, orange zest, apple sauce and eggs in a food processor for 2 minutes until the orange is well-pureed.

Add the H24 Rebuild Strength, PPP, cocoa powder and flour. Blend for a further 2 minutes until well-mixed, scraping down the sides. Add the teaspoon of baking powder and blend for 20 seconds until well-mixed.

Line the base and sides of a 6 inch springform tin with baking paper and pour in the cake batter. Cook for 22-28 minutes until a skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean, leave to cool completely.

For the frosting, de-stone the avocado, scoop flesh into a food processor, add the orange juice and blend until smooth and light, add PPP, Formula 1 Chocolate and cocoa powder. Blend until you have a smooth, light pipe-able frosting consistency, adding 20 ml of water to thin the mixture, if required.

Once the cake has cooled, slice horizontally through the middle of the cake and remove the top half, moving it to the side. Using a palette knife, spread roughly 1/3 of the frosting on the bottom layer and place the top layer back on. Frost the top of the cake using the remaining 2/3 of the frosting.
