Dear Club Members:I hope everyone who had the opportunity to participate in at least one or more of the Member Homecoming Weekend activities last month enjoyed the event(s). It is always great to see many members around the Club with friends and family having a good time.

At the last Member & Manager’s reception, I recapped several projects and improvements that have either been completed or are scheduled to be done shortly. I would like to take this opportunity to repeat this list, especially for the members who were not present:

Homeowner’s Association Projects:

• Pressure wash the exterior of the Ocean Towers

• Pressure wash the exterior of the One Bedroom Condominiums

• Five (5) beach walkovers rebuilt as a result of hurricane damage

• Painted exterior doors and frames of all Phase 1 units

• Elevator repairs of approximately $100k

• Replacement of the Phase 1 roof, including other repairs as a result of hurricane damage scheduled to begin this Fall and end with exterior painting

• Repaving the front drive by the porte cochere is also being planned

2

• 120 new beach/pool chairs purchased, with 60 at Yacht Harbor pool

• Sound and light system at the Fantasy Pool Complex completed

• Pool leak repairs on the Lazy River planned for the off-season

• Chiller system at Yacht Harbor Village replaced last month

• Chiller system replacement at the Conservatory scheduled this month

As you can see, all the HOA’s and the Club are committed to these projects and improvements to enhance the experience of all members and guests.

Thank you for your patience as these projects occur..

Warm regards,

BRAD HAUER, PGA General Manager

Advisory Board of Governors (ABOG) Update Dear Club Members:

ABOG is focused on improving communication between The Club and Members, and we believe that open communications will provide members with an overview of what’s happening at The Club. This type communication should occur at Member Manager meetings and will address many of the questions currently unanswered. The ABOG Sub-Committees, along with their Club Representative, work together on identifying and prioritizing opportunities to improve both facilities and service. This type partnership is working well and below are a few examples:

Food & Beverage: • Replaced 2 of the 8 Teas per month with Ice Cream Socials.Program has been successful in attracting members who have not attended

the traditional Tea. The program will continue in 2019.• Working on Cooking Classes at The Conservatory to begin in January 2019.• New Menus• Monthly Member Mixer and Member & Manager Reception themed food• Improved food• Work directly with Chefs who participate in meetings• Instituted wine dinners and spirit and beer tastings• Revived wine locker program• Kept pricing increases to a minimum

4

Page 5: LIVING - Home - The Club At Hammock Beach October2018.pdf · Couples Golf Sunday, October 14 at 9am • 18 holes • Ocean Course This fun Golf Member Couples events feature an 18

Sports & Leisure:• New chairs at the beach and pool.• New cushions at the Lodge and South Tower pool.• Provide feedback and ideas for new and updated fitness classes, schedule times and instructors, including chair yoga, cardio yoga, water zumba, step class.• Work with club to continue maintaining club property in the pools and fitness areas, as well as promoting the purchasing of new equipment, ie beach

chairs, chair pads, umbrellas, fitness room floor, weights, bands and yoga blocks.• Provide member input on tennis events and upkeep of the tennis facilities.• Assist spa director with maintenance items in spa and locker rooms. Provide feedback for additions to the spa menu as well as spa special events.

Golf:• Completed extensive Hole Handicap analysis using Men’s and Ladies’ Conservatory scores from the prior 6 months. Several hole handicap change

recommendations will be utilized in all remaining events and incorporated into the next printing of scorecards.• Men’s tournament flights will be based upon tee box played, improving the perception of fairness since each flight has a designated yardage.• Created a comprehensive set of Local Rules with Club Staff to be utilized in all Club events • Improved the integrity of member handicaps via multiple written and verbal communication efforts relative to the posting of scores, including Implementing

score posting reminder on GPS screen at the conclusion of both nines.• Provided consistent emphasis/focus to Golf Staff & Members on the “real” definition of Pace of Play...”Staying up With the Group in Front of You.“• Improved communication of key Golf Committee objectives throughout the year via Periodic Full Golf Member Updates on direct emails.• Individual committee members helped their Club counterparts plan & execute the (7) Club sponsored events for the year.

.Social• Moved several social events to weekends in order to accommodate more members• Assist with selection of entertainment at all events• Assist with planning special events, i.e. Art-Wine Festival, Ladies Retreat, NY Eve• Game Day and Homecoming were moved to different months for 2018 to balance the social calendar• Advise club management on pricing of events• Brief surveys are now sent after special events and provide feedback to the committee for the following year’s planning• Planned off-campus trips, i.e. Raiders of the Lost Ark, Beautiful, Jersey Boys

As The Club works to change the business culture, members should expect to see more improvements taking place in the maintenance and repair of the facility as well as customer care. ABOG meetings with The Club focus on everything from membership types to promotional strategies in the restaurants. ABOG serves two roles: (1) provide feedback to The Club on Club programs and initiatives; and (2) advocate for Members. Our ABOG Meetings with Club Management are productive although some of the topics discussed require further analysis prior to making decisions, and this takes time. From ABOG’s viewpoint, we see open communications and the exchange of ideas as an important first step to draw upon Member experiences to work in partnership with The Club.

Going forward, we need to refocus the Member Manager meeting as a Club event and find a better way for ABOG to communicate with Members.

. SINCERELY,

Joe RoyA B O G P R E S I D E N T

The Proper Way to Take a Divot by Jeff Hager, Head Golf Professional

Golfers love to practice. But have you ever wondered how the pattern of your divots on the practice range tee affects the golf course? With every swing of an iron, a divot of turf is usually removed. A small bucket of golf balls (typically 25 or 30 balls) can remove a lot of turf. And if you’re really working on your short game it is not uncommon to hit 100 shots or more. This means a lot of divots which require a lot of turf recovery before a tee stall may be returned to the same location.

Golfers have a big impact on the amount of turf coverage and performance of practice range tees. How one practices not only influences how much turf is removed with each swing, but also how quickly the turf will recover. The three most common divot patterns – scattered, concentrated and linear – can be seen in the photo.

A scattered divot pattern removes the most amount of turf because a full divot is removed with every swing. Scattering divots results in the most turf loss and uses up the largest area of a tee stall. This forces the golf facility to rotate tee stalls most frequently and often results in an inefficient use of the tee.

A concentrated divot pattern removes all turf in a given area. While this approach does not necessarily result in a full-sized divot removed with every swing, by creating a large void in the turf canopy there is little opportunity for timely turf recovery.

The linear divot pattern involves placing each shot directly behind the previous divot. In so doing, a linear pattern is created and only a small amount of turf is removed with each swing. This can usually be done for 15 to 20 shots before moving sideways to create a new line of divots. So long as a minimum of 4 inches of live turf is preserved between strips of divots, the turf will recover quickly. Because this divot pattern removes the least amount of turf and promotes quick recovery, it is the preferred method.

Playing For PinkThe Hammock Beach Ladies Golf Association will, once again, sponsor Playing for Pink, a breast cancer fundraiser dedicated to those

who have lost the fight and to those still fighting! The golf, luncheon and silent auction will take place on Wednesday, October 10, at the Ocean Course, so please mark it on your calendar. Stay tuned this year for additional “fun”raisers in October sponsored by our Men’s

Golf Association and, new this year, our friends at Hammock Beach Tennis. We thank them both in joining our cause to support Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, where 100% of the proceeds stay in Volusia and Flagler counties helping those in the community who

need necessary diagnostic exams or assistance with their medical treatment.

ALL CLUB MEMBERS AND THEIR GUESTS are invited to attend the luncheon and silent auction which will be held in the Atlantic Ballroom at 1:00 pm. Please save the date! The HBLGA is looking forward to another successful event!

tively with all other collected money going directly to Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.

We have several initiatives this year to help surpass last year’s collection of over $6,000 and help accumulate donations towards this great cause. Please come prepared with your checkbook in hand and some side cash for other planned challenges. We will accept cash at sign in, but prefer checks which will act as your receipt if you need one and should be made out directly to the American Cancer Society.

2) Non-MGA members play for $35 per participant: Includes two free beer/sodas the day of play.

4) Effner Putting Challenge: During the awards and raffle giveaway, we will offer a money matching putting competition to the three winning teams. Closest putt wins! If the teams win, we will match your team’s winnings and donate it to the charity. If we win, we will still match your team winnings, but combine our match with your winnings and donate the total to the charity.

5) Bungo Bungalow Chipping Contest: Treated as an additional hole, we will have a chipping contest near the practice green during the event. Entry cost is $20 and the winner gets usage of a 10th floor Hammock Beach condo for 3days/2 nights. *some restrictions apply

THE 5 ELEMENTS OF A GOOD SERVE by Gene Paul Lascano, Director of TennisWhen it comes to serving, the number one priority for players at the club level is trying to serve with power. Unfortunately, that is not the most important characteristic to a good serve. In fact, there are four things that matter more than power.

1. Get your serve in It doesn’t matter if you can serve 130MPH if you can’t get it in the box. When serving, it is always better to start the point as it immediately puts the burden on your opponent to make the next shot. If you double fault and fail to put your serve in play, you’re basically giving a free point away.

2. Hit your serve to different locations Once you are able to get your serve in on a regular basis, your next focus should be placement. Typically, most players favor one of their groundstrokes. If you can direct the serve to their weakness from the start of the point, you have a better chance of dictating play.

3. Serve the ball deep into the service box Once you have mastered consistency and placement, work on the hitting the ball with good length. The deeper into the service box you can hit your serve, the harder it will be for your opponent to take charge of the point. This is essential particularly in doubles as it can prevent your opponents from rushing the net off the return.

4. Serve with spin The ability to serve with spin is difficult to master, but it increases your margin of error without sacrificing racquet head speed. Most players struggle with generating spin on their serves due to the fact that they use the incorrect grip. Remember to use a continental grip and you will have access to both a slice and kick (topspin) serve.

5. Serve with power Serving with power is your final priority. Once you have mastered the other four elements: consistency, placement, depth, and spin---BOMBS AWAY!!!

This year’s Team Hammock Beach Project Game Day was a huge success full of fun and laughter.

Members tested their skills by getting across the pool in soggy sweatpants, stockpiling fruit in their bathing suits, building a boat and much more! We ended with awards during lunch. Thanks to all the Members who participated and showed such great sportsmanship. Thanks to Andrew Huebner, Director of Activities and the Kids Crew Staff who did a tremendous job organizing,

coordinating and running the games. We look forward to another successful Team Hammock Beach Project Game Day next year!

Six Things You Should Do Every Morning for Optimal Health

By Donna M Gialone, Personal Trainer/Spin Instructor/Nutrition Counselor There has never been a time when we haven’t struggled to create harmony between our social obligations, family, and health; more often than not it can seem like a never-ending balancing act. Life is all about finding a balance and each day should be viewed as a fresh start. Below, I’ve provided six habits that are sure to set you up for health success. Try incorporating them

into your morning routine to create balance that ensures your health is a priority.

Healthy People Eat Veggies as Breakfast You probably already eat a slice of toast or a bowl of cereal for breakfast, but is it the best choice? A balanced breakfast includes protein, fiber, fat and veggies/fruit. The addition of veggies/fruit will keep you satisfied and prevent mid-morning cravings. Try ham and spinach frittatas or a fruit/veggie shake.

Healthy People Hydrate Drink a glass of water before brewing that first cup of java. Coffee has been known to help boost your energy levels, but drinking water is a healthier first step. While we sleep our bodies get dehydrated that’s why drinking water first thing in the morning is important. Fill up your BPA-Free water bottle for the day and set an intention to keep your body hydrated properly.

Healthy People Sweat in the Morning Working out in the afternoon or after a long day isn’t always a guarantee. You stand a better chance of getting your work out in if it happens first thing in the morning before other tasks take priority. If going for an early morning run, or hitting the gym isn’t your thing, try taking the stairs or going for a walk on the beach. Just 15 minutes of moderate to intense activity can help you reach your wellness goals.

Healthy People Have a Plan for Dinner Meal prepping is not only a huge timesaver but it also ensures you have a healthy option on hand. Before you leave the house in the morning to run errands or go to the gym, defrost your protein or use a slow cooker. Write your shopping list down before you leave the house so you can pre-order your groceries or swing by the grocery store to pick them up on your way home

Healthy People Rest Resting is not only about getting enough sleep at night, you should also factor in time to get your morning routine accomplished without feeling frazzled. Factor in a few extra minutes to relax – drink your water, relax with your cup of java, or meditate. Setting aside relaxation time every morning is a positive game changer.

Healthy People Time Block their Day Time blocking is a great tool to ensure social media, emails and other distractions don’t stop you from meeting your daily goals. Take time to review your to-do lists weekly then daily and set aside a specific amount of time for completing them. Ensure your health priorities (work outs, meal-prepping and rest) are also a part of the plan.
