Living in the image of god
COVER: Lionel S. Reiss, “Genesis, #6,” 1952, Collection of Park Avenue Synagogue
2 Park Avenue Synagogue Bulletin
“And God created humans in God’s image.” Genesis 1:27
TwO Of OuR gREaTEsT sagEs, Rabbi Akiva and Ben Azzai, once debated what is the
most important principle of the Torah. Akiva pointed to “Love your neighbor as yourself” as the starting point of the discussion. Ben Azzai, on the other hand,
identified the notion of being created in image of God as the foundational building block of all ethics. While Akiva is more familiar to us than Ben Azzai, in this Jewish debate Ben Azzai wins out. Why? Because
if one believes that all of humanity is created in God’s image, then every human being is not only unique, but of equal and infinite dignity. From this one principle, every single interaction – from the most mundane interpersonal exchange to articulating global social priorities – becomes infused with an ethic of universal human dignity. In our topsy-turvy world often lacking a shared moral compass, “to be created in the image of God” is as safe and agreeable a standard for human behavior as can be imagined. But what about those who don’t believe in God or perhaps, in the authority or relevance of the Biblical tradition? What would be a secular litmus
test for personal and social ethics? If one does not believe in an “Absolute,” can one distinguish between right and wrong with any surety? In a world filled with division and difference, what are the objective and shared standards by which our political, social and economic lives can take shape? For that matter, how is it that people of faith, who believe in humanity’s common divine spark, emerge with such polarized views on matters of shared concern? This year, our annual Shabbaton will explore this critical conversation. We are honored to welcome Rabbi Irving (Yitz) Greenberg, one of the most articulate and thoughtful Jewish theologians of our time. A prodigious scholar, institution builder and spokesperson on behalf of the Jewish people, Rabbi Greenberg has devoted much of his career to exploring our Shabbaton theme of “Living in the Image of God.” So too, social psychologist Dr. Jonathan Haidt has dedicated much of his research to how morality varies across cultures. Individually, each has much to contribute to our communal learning. As they speak together, a robust dialogue will emerge that will provide both texture and substance to this year’s theme. In addition to Rabbi Greenberg and Dr. Haidt, we will welcome Blu Greenberg for a session on her personal
experience with living in God’s image and how that has expressed itself in Orthodox feminism. A Shabbaton is not only learning, but a lot of fun. It will be a treat to be entertained on Friday night by Ted Saint James, whose work as a mentalist will undoubtedly keep us spellbound, and to conclude Shabbat with the music of Joshua Nelson. Every year our Shabbaton grows larger and larger; the last few years have completely sold out. Bringing together old friends and new ones, the Shabbaton is a great building block for creating community. In many respects, it represents the very best of our congregation. None of this, of course, would be possible without the devoted work of our Shabbaton Committee. I thank Darcy Dalton, Nadine Habousha Cohen, Marlene Muskin, Joan Schefler, Susan Silverman, Aaron Stern, Vanessa Waye and Barbara Weinstein, along with our Vice President for Programming, Jeanie Rosensaft, and our professional team of Liz Offenbach, Beth Levick and Dina Yakar for all their leadership! Shabbaton 2014 is sure to be a hit! Check the facing page and the enclosed Winter-Spring Program Catalog for details and be sure to sign up!

Finding the Kabbalah in Kabbalat Shabbat
ThE KabbalaT shabbaT sER-ViCE as we know it was born out of the culture of Jewish Mysticism
(Kabbalah) in Safed during the 16th century. The most famous of the kab-balists, Isaac Luria, developed what we now refer to as Lurianic Kabbalah and
a kabbalistic under-standing of creation. According to Luria, creation occurred in three stages: tsimtsum, contraction; sh’virat hakelim, the breaking of the vessels; and tikkun, restoration. Understanding Luria’s
creation myth is critical for reaching the mystical heights of the music and prayers that prepare us to enter the sanctity of Shabbat. Luria begins with a question: How can God create the world if God is everywhere? Luria finds his answer in the kabbalistic notion of tsimtsum. In order to make space to create the world, God
needed to contract, leaving behind a most powerful vacuum. But this vacuum was not empty, it contained the root of evil – for God’s contraction was the means of separating the Divine from all things evil. Once the world was created, God was ready to emanate back into the world via streams of divine light. This light, too powerful to exist unshielded in this world, was placed in a number of vessels. The vessels that were close enough to the divine source were able to withstand the power of God’s presence. Other vessels, especially those that contained the root of evil and were farther from the source of light, could not withstand the pressure and were shattered like glass. Lest chaos remain unchecked, a new light shone forth, collecting and restoring most of the shards. Restoration is not complete, however. Shards of “evil” still exist in our world. Lurianic Kabbalah urges all of us to collect and repair the broken vessels of the world (the origin of the phrase tikkun olam). One need not accept the
Lurianic myth to appreciate its message that good deeds on earth can help restore the universe. And Kabbalat Shabbat? Kabbalat Shabbat is the act of welcoming that single day of the week when unity prevails over fragmentation and we have a preview of a total tikkun – what the rabbis called a “taste of the world-to-come.” When we arrive in shul on Friday night, primed to bring Shabbat into our lives, we do so with the understanding that the joy we taste on Shabbat will one day become a reality. Our task is to shepherd this reality, one shard at a time, with purpose, compassion, and a welcoming embrace. Join us for Kabbalat Shabbat services, every Friday evening at 6:15 pm.

Know someone ill, elderly or homebound? The PAS Bikur Cholim Caring Committee – in loving memory of Dr. Albert & Phyllis L. Cornell – fulfills the mitzvah of visting the ill by reaching out to those in need through telephone calls, visits, and holiday packages. The Caring Committee’s trained volunteers are committed to providing confidential hands-on support and companionship to the members of our congregation. To arrange for this mitzvah, please call Rabbi Cosgrove’s office at 212-369-2600, x120.
