Jim’s Jive …. “Yesterday is History, Tomorrow is a Mystery, Today is a Gift, that’s why it’s called The Present” (generally contributed to Eleanor Roosevelt, but in part traced back to many contributors). I truly believe that every day is a real treasure and a gift, no matter what happens. The amateur radio hobby is clearly a part of that gift. We are involved in a hobby that has made, and will continue to make, new strides in technology – and we all get to participate – how cool is that? Make sure you take full advantage of every “today” you have. Our little group has access to some great “human assets” (business lingo for talented people), and make sure you take full advantage of them! Welcome to 2015 We’re off to a great 2015! I’m excited about all the great things we’ve been talking about at our Klub breakfast, the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of most months, at Americus Grill in Brighton. Additionally, many of us meet there most Saturdays for breakfast. Come join us! Our hope is to start planning now for the fun events in the summer. Please try and make it to a meeting or breakfast. Klub Repeaters Les, W8MSP, and the other “techno geeks”, have put together a very workable plan for migration of our 146.68 and 444.525 repeaters to new Yaesu DR1X repeater systems. We took delivery of the new units on December 27th, and hope to have them ready for installation as soon as possible. We’re currently running the 146.68 system on backup hardware, installed by myself and Bob, K8VQC, with additional adjustments by myself and Dave, KD8UCF. Want to know more about the new repeaters? Just read about them in my blog (k8jk.wordpress.com.) VE Testing To my knowledge, LARK is the only organization in all of Michigan that still continues to offer FREE amateur radio exam sessions. If you know of potential new amateurs, send them our way. If you’re looking to upgrade, we’re only too happy to offer you the test. Tell your friends, enemies, mail carrier, heck, everybody! My personal thanks to all the VE examiners who make this happen!

Projects We’ve been shooting for a goal of offering at least one construction project per year related to amateur radio. I think it’s a pretty good target to shoot for, but we can always use your input. Because we’re all volunteers, the project development and planning cycle takes just a bit longer than what most project teams’ encounter in the real world. If you have any ideas, please share them. Thanks in advance! Radio Raffle We took a brief hiatus from the world famous LARK Radio Raffle this past year. This had been a great fund raiser for the Klub. What is your opinion? Should we bother to launch a 2015 Radio Raffle? If so, what should we give away? Your comments will be very useful! Programs We have always been blessed with interesting programs and events, and our program directors have always strived for an interesting balance. They can always use your inputs to assist them in planning meaningful events for our Klub meetings. I would much rather spend our monthly meeting listening to interesting topics than some of the other things that we do. Help us help keep those meetings interesting. What do you want to hear about? What might you want to contribute? At our November meeting, we heard from Don, KD8NNU about killer competitive mobile HF installations. Your topic doesn’t have to be nearly as detailed. It might be just a discussion of that new antenna your built, or what you discovered while trying to fi an older power supply. Remember, today is a “gift”, and your participation is part of the “present”. Emergency Preparedness Although we don’t want to think about it, emergency preparedness is something we signed up for when we accepted an amateur radio license. In a wide spread emergency, amateurs may be called in to assist local agencies in any number of ways. If we are not prepared ourselves, we can be of little value to anyone else. Do you have a family emergency plan? Are you equipped with alternate power sources, food and water? Do you know what to do in the event of a large scale emergency? I’m just asking, it’s up to each of us to answer that question. The Amateur Radio Relay League The ARRL finished its celebration of their 100th anniversary this last year. Amateur Radio has held an interesting position in the shaping of many technologies that we all enjoy today. Supporting the ARRL with your membership is not only good for you, but also for the future of amateur radio and the explosive growth of technology. While I don’t always agree with everything that the ARRL does or advises, I am still a member, and support the only organization who is dedicated for supporting our hobby. If you are not a member, consider joining.

Silent Key Estates The official policy for supporting the liquidation of silent key estates hasn’t changed much since I have been involved in LARK. On behalf of the family members, LARK will assist in the gathering and selling of amateur radio related gear for its members, and the only charges will be our own expenses, (flea market tables, fuel to go to events, auction fees for online selling, etc.). Sometimes we receive donations from the families for our efforts, on behalf of the silent key, and sometimes not. We never charge a fee for this effort. I am grateful that many Klub members volunteer to assist in this effort. Great Lakes Division Director At The LARK Meeting! It was exciting that our Great Lakes Division Director, Dale Williams, WA8EFK, presented at our December 2014 meeting. We wanted this meeting to be the best that we could make it, so we are opening up the December meeting to EVERY amateur radio operator in and around Livingston County! To accommodate a larger crowd in a more comfortable setting, John Waters KD8CCR made available to LARK his EMS training facility. For the December meeting, we gathered at: Livingston County EMS 1911 Tooley Road Howell, MI 48843 A special thanks to our program director, Bob, K8VQC and John, KD8CCR, for their efforts in making this meeting a great success! But while these components are important, your brain also needs frequent exercise and care. As an adult, the brain’s most important trait is plasticity – the ability to adapt to new experiences or life changes (think getting married, having children or switching jobs). Because adult brain development is primarily shaped by outside stimuli, it’s vital to routinely work out your brain just like you would any other muscle. Here’s why – and how – to make training your brain a priority.

1. Brain health is tied to overall health. All aspects of your health, including mental, physical and spiritual, are connected. For example, according to recent studies, physical activity increases blood flow to the brain and stimulates brain cell growth – increasing mental abilities up to 30 percent. Also, a nutritious diet rich in good fats (such as those found in fish and olive oil) is associated with a reduced risk of dementia. In turn, brain exercise – especially when it involves social engagement – benefits your heart, protects against depression and builds a “brain reserve” that contributes to a lower dementia risk. Searching for an activity that works both your brain and body? Try joining a dance class, sports team or walking club, or maybe even getting on the air with a ham station. 2. When your brain is in shape, you’re more resilient. Brain health is essential for a fulfilling, healthy and long life. If you’re feeling overwhelmed or stressed, consider learning a new skill. As you focus on learning the new task – especially if it’s something simple that you can do with your hands – your brain slows down and relaxes. This allows you to subconsciously focus your attention on other problems and find solutions more quickly, just like your brain does when you sleep. Learning and building selfesteem help you recover from difficult times and cope with stress. 3. A healthy brain protects against dementia. The brain benefits by tackling something it doesn’t already know. The challenge helps it build up cells and strengthen the connection between them, giving the brain more “backup” to help it cope if any cells get damaged or die. A mentally stimulating lifestyle – for example, reading and playing music and games, or learning Morse Code – can protect against dementia and even delay the condition up to nine years. Mental exercise may also protect against accumulation of damaging proteins in the brains of people with Alzheimer’s disease. Other Thoughts Can’t get on the air because you’re having equipment issues or you r antenna fell down? We no longer have a subscription to the Physic Friends Network, so there is no possible way we’ll know about this, and your need for assistance, without you telling us. After reciting the pledge of allegiance Introductions were made. The program this evening was given by Don Swetzig KD8NNU on mobile installation and operation. Minutes of the previous meeting as well as the financial report were published in the LED. Mark Sharef W8QS moved to accept the minutes as printed seconded by Van N8GVD motion carried. Bruce N8WWX reminded those CERT members that First aid recertification will be on NOV 22 from 9-1 at EMS headquarters. The State will reissue new races cards after first of year FEMA requirements NIMS class IS22, 100, 200, 700, 701, 702, 703 which are online. Bruce Pollack N8WWX is the new district emergency coordinator for district 1 Clinton, Eaton, Ingham, .Gratiot, Hillsdale, Livingston, Jackson, Lenawee, Shiawassee. Cert deployment on December 6 in the Village in Fowlerville for their winter festivities. Technical director: Les Butler W8MSP reported we ordered two new repeaters in another digital mode by Yeaseu replacing 68 and 440 they will run in dual mode digital or analog. Price is $1000 for the Next meeting will be held at EMS building the Great Lakes div director for ARL will be our guest speaker. Field day results are in we were number one in the Great Lakes division and number nine in our class in the division. Jim Beecham KD8DAD was looking for someone to take over the club website and Reece Albright KD8WVL has volunteered take over the task. Thank you Reece. W2GLD volunteered to do a program on the new format in the future. One-Day Tech Class I will be teaching my next OneDay Tech Class to be held on Saturday, January 17, 2015, at the Ann Arbor HandsOn Museum, 221 E. Ann St., Ann Arbor, MI. The class starts at 9:00 am and runs until 3:30 pm, at which time students are given the test. Preregistration is required, and there is a $10 fee to take the class, but the fee will be waived for anyone under the age of 18. We often fill the class and have to put people on the waiting list. Prospective students should download the study guide IMMEDIATELY, read through it a couple of times, and take some online practice tests (URLs for practice test websites can be found in the study guide) before coming to class. Michigan PRB-1 Information and Comments To the Hams of Michigan: As most of you probably know by now, SB0493 (PRB1) has successfully been passed by both the Michigan Senate and House and is now headed to the desk of Governor Snyder for his signature. Good news travels fast. I am hearing rumbles of some misinformation that is being propagated via ham chatter that is not accurate and in some cases is misleading. SB 0493 is not a law until it is signed by the Governor. That has not yet happened, so everything is pending until it is. We, as a group, have some things that we need to understand about what this bill is and what it is not. SB0493 simply puts the existing PRB1 federal legislation into Michigan Law. It does not grant anyone or any group any "super powers" to do whatever they want when putting up a tower or applying for a permit to erect a tower. The entire purpose of the Michigan PRB1 legislation is to put the federal regulation into state law, thus making it easier for local governments to locate and be aware of federal regulations when faced with a request by an amateur to erect a tower and/or antenna. This bill also creates an advisory committee to help local units of government and other entities navigate the waters of tower and antenna regulation in our communities. This committee is intended to be an informational source only with no decision making authority. We as amateur radio operators need to act courteously and professionally in order to be seen as such by our served agencies and to not propagate misleading information. Please don't forget all the work that has been done to get us where we are today. Please do not jeopardize the progress that has been made through thoughtless comments on the air or in public. Remember, SB0493 is NOT YET a law and is not in effect until the Governor signs it. Please keep this in mind when discussing the PRB1 topic and also be aware of the purpose of the bill. More information will be released in the near future so we request that you monitor your email for additional communications. New General Class Question Pool Released The Question Pool Committee of the National Conference of Volunteer Examiner Coordinators (NCVEC) has released the 20152019 Element 3 (General Class) question pool. The new question pool becomes effective for all Element 3 examinations administered on or after July 1, 2015, and it remains valid until June 30, 2019. The question pool files are available in PDF, Microsoft Word (.doc), and ASCII text formats. Section G7A requires the use of one illustration, a schematic identified as G71.
