The Mask in the actor’s energy
trabalho do ator e da linguagem da Máscara no teatro contemporâneo.
Moitara Group Theatre, since 1988, has been developing a research on the
actor’s work in order to understand the principles that support the art of
Moitara, having the base to elaborate the Group’s own methodology in the
studies of the aspects and functions of the theatrical Mask.
Along these years, through a systematic pratice, Moitara has been deepening its
ethnological, technical and scenic knowledge of the Mask, making workshops,
performances, lectures and exhibitions in several Art Festivals throughout
Brasil, in order to contribute to reflect over the work of the actor and the
language of the Mask in the contemporary Theatre.
concepção do espetáculo, o espaço cênico onde será utilizada, gênero e
The Mask is an element of representation that, probably, follows the
whole History of Mankind, through its myths, rites or other
manifestations, and it is, usually, linked to individual and comunity
necessities. The Mask gets into the Theatre via a magical and
ritualistic origin and spreads itself with the artistic invention, etching
its scenic language, depicted in several styles. Because of that, it is
important that, when handcrafting a mask, we should take in
consideration the conception of the play, the scenic place where it will
be used, gender and the environment where it is inserted. Within this
attention, the Mask is ready to play, as it concentrates, in its volume
and drawing, a synthesis of its characteristics, which physiognomy
suggests, to the actor, that he/she should find a body and a tone of
voice with specific quality of energy. It is a sort of play born from the
physical body (the actor and the mask) without needing any
established written text. Due to this, the Mask is not an artistic piece
that covers the face, for the Mask needs a true relationship with the
actor, in which the performer must be away from his/her daily habits
in order to achieve the spirit of the Mask.
The Theatrical Mask
evidenciam as situações, contextos e princípios básicos do jogo de vários estilos de
Máscaras: Neutra, Abstrata, Larvária, Expressiva, Meia-Máscara e Acento.
The Mask in the Actor’s Energy is a performance/lecture intended to reflect on the
contribution, technical and artistic, of the theatrical Mask to the education of the
actor and the development of an essential Theatre. In the performance, the work of
the actor, creating series of physical actions and scenes, is depicted, which makes
evident the basic principles of performances with several styles of masks: Neutral,
Abstract, Larval, Expressive, Half-mask or Accentuation.
The Mask in the actor’s energy
The theatrical mask demands to the actor a compromise of the whole body immersed
in a dynamic process where every action has a meaning, which is utterly lived. The
end of an action is the beginning of one other, constructing a sequence of actions that
are harmonious in their pauses and juxtaposition. Having this construction of actions
as a base, we make a training with physical actions aiming at the demolishing of
daily and ordinary habits besides toning the body in order to make it able to a game
of spontaneous exchange. The most important thing in the work is not the ability of
doing an action but the assimilation of principles related to physiological factors (as
balance and imbalance, pulse, alternation, compensation, opposition...) which feed
the spine. This sort of re-education gives the actor the opportunity to act freely in a
web of codes, creating a physical action sequence and developing a generous body
with its senses awaken, building a relationship with time and space.
The actor’s labour with physical actions
A Neutra é uma Máscara de fisionomia
simples, simétrica, sem conflitos, que
propõe ao ator ampliar todos os seus
sentidos.
The Neutral is a mask with the simplest
physiognomy. It is symmetrical and with
no conflicts in it and proposes, to the
actor, to widen all his/her senses.
Through Silence, it establishes a relation
with the entire environment. It is not a
character. It proposes a state based on
Calmness and Perception, and it is the
starting-point for all the other masks.
Through it, the actor understands what is
a determined, present and alive body in
a state of representation.
Neutral Mask
São Máscaras inteiras de formas
geométricas, sem definição de caráter,
que sugere um jogo ágil, desenvolvendo o
olhar do corpo no espaço. É um jogo que
nasce diretamente da forma,
relacionando tempo e espaço,
conduzindo o ator a uma dinâmica
extra-cotidiana onde reside o sentido de
vida da Máscara Teatral.
These are geometrical masks, without
defined characters, which suggest a quick
play, developing the body ability of
interacting with the space. It is sort of a
play which begins straight from their
forms, with a close relation with timing
and space, conducting the actor to a non-
quotidian dynamism where the life of the
theatrical Mask lives.
Abstract Mask
{personagem character: Larvária Feminina}
São formas simplificadas da figura
humana, que lembram rostos inacabados e
que remetem ao primeiro estado dos insetos
(larva). Fazem parte do grupo das máscaras
silenciosas, que não permitem a utilização
da voz, mas exprimem a essência da
palavra falada através das ações.
They are simplified forms of human beings
which remind unfinished faces and recall the
first stage of the insects (larva). They are part
of a group of silent masks that does not allow
the usage of voice but expresses the essence
of spoken words through physical actions.
Larval Mask
{personagem character: Maria dos Bobes}
São Máscaras de feições mais
elaboradas, com definições de caráter,
que traduzem estados de ânimo.
Pertencem à categoria das Máscaras
inteiras, silenciosas e representam
“tipos” do cotidiano. O seu jogo sugere ao
ator encontrar o corpo do personagem
com referência nas linhas e volumes da
Máscara, dando uma noção de peso,
idade e de contexto cultural.
They are more elaborated masks, with defined
characters, which translate states of soul.
They take part in a group called entire and
silent masks and represent daily types. Their
play suggests, to the actor, that he/she must
find the body of the character in the lines and
volumes of the mask, expressing the notions
of weight, age and cultural environment.
Expressive Mask
{personagem character: Pipi}
São Máscaras falantes que cobrem
somente a parte superior do rosto.
Comumente representam “personagens
além do cotidiano.
These are talkative masks which cover
only the superior part of the face.
Usually, they represent defined and
established characters and, in the same
mask, several types are concentrated.
Their play suggests that the actors must
establish the body and the tone of the
character’s voice, placing it in a cultural
environment and taking the text to a
place over the daily routine and habits.
Half-mask
{personagem character: Doutor}
nariz vermelho considerado a menor
máscara do mundo) e outra onde o ator
These are masks which accentuate part of
the face, e.g. nose and/or forefront.
Performing with them, the actor can
experience two kinds of play: one that
works the actor himself, exposing his/her
weakness, insignificance but making them
the energy of the performance itself (like a
Clown scene, where the actor can wear a
red nose – the smallest mask in the World)
and another where the actor gives life to a
character revealing the ridicule of this
character, as, for example, Dr. Balanzone,
a character from Commedia Dell’Arte. Both
masks are considered accents, based in a
deep nature of the actor or the character.
Accentuation
{personagem character: Equitares Passarim}
A particular way
O Grupo Moitará faz um recorte especial
em seu estudo, dedicando-se à criação de
Máscaras que representam a síntese de
personagens-tipos do universo cultural
brasileiro e desenvolvendo uma
investigação dramatúrgica com referência
nas características desses personagens,
estabelecendo alguns paralelos com a
Commedia Dell’Arte.
Moitara Group Theatre has got an specific
part in its studies dedicated to the creation of
masks which would represent the synthesis of
representative types of brazilian cultural
universe. Besides that, they develop a drama
investigation based on the characteristics of
these types and comparing them to other
ones in Commedia Dell’Arte.
