The Park in Llandysul inthe beautiful Teifi Valleywill be a bustling place onSaturday, June 30,when theannual FoodFestivalwill betaking place.This is a wonderful

opportunity to samplesome mouth-watering pro-duce.Our festival offers a wide

range of good quality foodfrom all over Wales andespecially from the TeifiValley.The event will be opened

by Keith and Eirlys Evans.Keith has been involvedwith the Food Festivalsince it first started in 2001and every year has giventime andmuch appreciatedsupport in helping towardsthe success of the festival.Celebrity TV chefGareth

Richards, from Lampeter,

will be giving cookingdemonstrations in themainmarquee.Gareth is a well known

chef and is always ready tosupport local events.This year we also wel-

come Alana Spencer fromLlanrhystud, a young ladywho is fast making a namefor herself as a chocolatier.Also on the menu and

back by popular demandare two very special cooksand ex-local “celebrities”Rev Eric Roberts and RevKevin Davies, who will bedemonstrating theirunique and entertaining,cooking expertise.Therewill bemany other

attractions including com-petitions for local schoolchildren, singing and danc-ing by children from thelocal schools, harpists fromthe Llandysul based com-panyTelynauTeifi, fly fish-ing demonstrations withlocal anglers and manyother attractions to enjoy

throughout the day. TheFood Festival is run fromthe Llandysul & Pont-Tyweli Ymlaen Officewhich relies on the hardwork, expertise and knowl-edge of volunteers from thecommunity andCeredigion

JUNE is upon us, and to the culturedCardi this can mean only one thing –the annual semi-National Gwyl FawrEisteddfod will soon be here.

Most Cardigan people are awarethat the first ever National Eisteddfodwas held at Christmas 1176 in thebrand new stone hall of CardiganCastle. But when was the nextEisteddfod held in the town? Withnothing surviving in the records, wemust believe the organisers of a Semi-National event held in Cardigan in1866, who billed it as “…the first since1176!”Theeventwasheld inapavilionwhere Mount Zion stands today. Itattracted a large crowd, but was not afinancial success.

InJune1868 the ‘ValeofTivyUnitedEisteddfod’held in the townwasasuc-cess, and was followed by the crowd-pleasing and profitable semi-national‘Eisteddfod Gadeiriol Aberteifi’ onJune 12, 1878, and ‘EisteddfodFlynyddol Dyfed’ events held in thetown in July 1880 and August 1890.Furthereventsheld in the summersof1893, 1895 and 1899 consolidated thepopularity of these public contests inthe town. As a result, a number ofsmaller events were also held in localchapels and schools from this timeonwards. On August 4, 1909, a mas-sive success was enjoyed by theCardigan Semi-National Eisteddfod.There were enormous numbers ofentries and thousands of spectatorsthronged to the town,manyonpackedtrains to Cardigan Station. The mar-quee was erected at the site now occu-piedbyKingGeorgeV field. Fromthispoint until the mid-1930s, regularsmaller events were held in the town,most often at the Pavilion, NapierGardens, and the proceeds were givento the schools, hospital or local chari-table causes. The National came toCardigan in1942, but thewartimecon-ditions meant that it was a fairly low-keyevent, theconcertsbeingstaged inthe town’s chapels and halls. Despiteundeniable drawbacks, the event wasfondly remembered. Itwas in1953 thata Cardigan Semi-National Eisteddfodproved to be such a success, that theidea was mooted to make it an annualevent. The committee agreed, and theevent is still running today. It waslater named Gwyl Enfawr Aberteifi,which was shortened to Gwyl FawrAberteifi, by which name theEisteddfod has been referred to since1958.Areal showcase forWelsh talent,it has attracted some of the greatestchoirs, soloists andpoets tohavecomefrom Wales over the last half-centuryor so.Organisershavecomeandgone,and it seems unfair to single out indi-vidualswhensomanyhaveworkedsohard for so long, but the late Cllr.Owen M Owen and current DeputyMayor Cllr. Gwynfi Jenkins surelydeserve recognition for their efforts.

In 1976 the National Eisteddfod washeld in Cardigan, 800 years after thefirst event. It was a massive success,taking place in a record-breaking hot,dry summer, and, appropriatelyattracting the largest crowd the eventhad ever seen. The Gwyl Fawr wasabsent from the calendar that year,but returned in1977andhasremaineda popular fixture ever since. I wouldurge all who can to support the event.Like Barley Saturday, Cardigan’sGwyl Fawr is a noble tradition wellworth keeping alive.
