Our meeting held on Monday 14th March had, after the businesssection, Amanda Williams as guest speaker - her topic "Bumblebees".As well as members we welcomed 4 guests to hear this fascinatingtalk. Accompanied by an excellent range of slides, Amanda talked ofthe different species, their life cycle and the predicament they face tosurvive. As gardeners we were encouraged to help them survive bychanging planting schemes and by planting some of the best wildflower species to provide nectar and pollen. Also it was pointed outthat many pesticide sprays are not selective as to which insects arekilled - so bees can be victims too. Members were inspired byAmanda's enthusiasm to try to "do their bit" to protect and save thisvery useful but endangered species.

At our next meeting on Monday 11th April Idris Evans will give a talkentitled "Cattle Drovers of Wales".

As always, visitors and new members will be most welcome.

NETTLE RISOTTO

We are currently planning for our Food from the Wildworkshop and one of the recipes we love to do is arisotto using wild nettles. This is the perfect time of year to cookwith nettles as they are young and tender. They are very nutritiousand tasty. Use rubber gloves to collect them and only use theyoung growing tips.

Large bowl of nettle shoots ( top 4/5 leaves)200g risotto rice1 large onion1 clove garlic75g butter1 litre vegetable stockParmesan cheeseChives (optional)

Rinse the leaves and blanch for 2 minutes in a pan of boiling water.Squeeze water from leaves and chop finely.

Heat stock until almost boiling. Melt 50g butter in large saucepanand sweat finely chopped onion and garlic until soft but notbrown. Add rice and mix well until rice is coated with butter.Add 1/3 stock and bring to gentle simmer and cook until stock hasbeen absorbed. Add nettles and a little more stock. Add a ladleof stock and cook until absorbed. Continue this process of addingstock until rice is cooked.

Add the final 25g butter, grated parmesan, chives and season totaste.

2. A batsman hits the ball in the airtowards the boundary. A fieldersteps over the boundary and palmsthe ball back into play beforethrowing it into the wicketkeeperwho hits the wicket with the ball,

Williams, the captain of Maeshafn CC asks you if you are blind. Do you:A: Punch him on the nose.B: Inform him that you will report him to the league if he doesn't watch it.

C: Apologise and say that you weren't paying any attention so you don't really know whether the batsman was out.

At the March meeting we had an exceptionally good talk byHelen Evans from WAGTAIL U.K. who had two "sniffer" dogswith her. She explained how the dogs are trained and the work

they do with various organisations and government departmentslike Police, M.O.D., Immigration, Airports etc as well as privatecompanies. We then had a demonstration with "Patch"and his

friend finding a tiny bit of "a drug" hidden behind the piano We all fell in love with the dogs who were so lively and friendly, but when their working harnesses were put on became so serious

and controlled. The next meeting is on April 12th in the Village Hall at 2.00pmwhen our friend Mr Bruce Parkin is bringing a collection of Paper

VALE OF CLWYD CLASSIC3RD SEPTEMBER 2011

After over 40 years of organising motorsport events Clwyd Vale Motor Clubare now proposing to run the inaugural Vale of Clwyd Classic sponsored byJonathan Turner of AGS Security Systems.

The cars will be leaving The Druid Inn, Llanferres at 1 minute intervalsfrom 8-30 am on Saturday 3rd September 2011 and will return about 5.00pm.

As in previous years, the event is raising funds for the North West AirAmbulance charity to add to the £5000 raised so far. You can see more aboutthe event at www.cvmc.org.uk and about the Air Ambulance atwww.northwestairambulance.co.uk.

I have had a problem reported to me that concerns me greatly, a veryirresponsible person has recently been walking their dog around thevillage without picking up their mess, it has only become a problem ashort time ago, a complaint has been received from the school that it hasbeen walked into school and into parents homes, as you can imagine thecomplaints that I have received have been very angry.

THIS MUST STOP NOW as a dog owner I am not prepared to be classedin the same league as this irresponsible person use 1 of 2 options. pickup after your dog or don't walk it in the village. I don't want this problemreported to me again.

For Christians Easter Day marks themost important festival in the churchyear. One word much associated withthe festival through many centuriesis the word 'joy'. Why?

The Hebrew root of the word 'joy'used in the Old Testament of theBible implies 'being excited', and theGreek word in the New Testamentimplies 'intense joy'.

For those who believe that, as StJohn's Gospel puts it, "God so lovedthe world that he gave his only Son,so that everyone who believes in himmay not perish but have eternal life",Easter is the point where that beliefis given its most vivid expression.Jesus Christ has been born in anearthly manger at Christmas, he hasgrown up, begun a short butspectacular ministry of teaching, preaching, and healing, beenarrested, sentenced to death, andcrucified. Some of Jesus followers inthose days of his earthly ministrygrasped who he was but many didnot. 'Who are you?' was a question onthe lips of many at the time.

As Christians celebrate the finding ofthe empty tomb, and begin to listento the words on the lips of the risenJesus Christ as he walks with hisfirst disciples along a dusty road toEmmaus, our Easter emotionsinclude excitement at thosemomentous events. That death itselfis defeated is a cause for intense joy.Resurrection is no longer only an

abstract religious concept to bedebated by the differing religiousgroups of the day. For followers of theRisen Christ it is a reality, to beexperienced through his presencewith us today.

In our own lives of both sorrows andjoys I imagine that most of us will beable to think of some special times ofjoy. In the film ET - the ExtraTerrestrial - a young (and cute andcuddly looking) alien with extra-ordinary powers gets left behind onearth by accident. He is befriendedby a young boy called Elliot. Elliottries to keep ETs presence secretbecause he is scared of how adultswill treat him, and the young boycomes to experience ETs remarkablepowers including being able to doextra-ordinary things with plants!Events in the film take a turn for theworst and Elliot believes that ET hasgone or has been killed. In onememorable scene, however, Elliotnotices a withered flower suddenlycoming to full life. He realises thatET is in fact alive and well andnearby with them. His joy seems toknow no bounds.

In our world of both joys and sorrows, the Good News of Easter is whereChristian celebration and joy iscentred. I hope and pray that, thisEaster, the joy of the risen Christwill touch your lives.

God blessAdrian

From the Vicar - Joy, ET, and Easter

Lovely weather at last and the bulbsare beautiful.

I have had an eventful month whatwith the tomb raiders at St Garmon'schurch. Also I took a trip to Cardiff to listento the EXIT doctor, from Australia, who was talking about 'The PeacefulPill'. They had trouble getting avenue due to the press but managedto book a hotel opposite the Castle.About 24 people attended after wehad cleared the press. One or twolooked seriously ill but the rest were justinterested to hear what Dr Philip Nitschkehad to say and to buy the book. You can goon line to EXIT International if you areinterested, although I would not like to beaccused of advertising this. This is apersonal decision.

I also went to the unveiling of the statue ofH M Stanley on Thursday 17th March. Agood audience were addressed by thebiographer Tim Jeal who spoke movingly asto how Stanley had stopped the slave tradein that part of Africa in the mid 19thcentury, by opposing the Arab slave tradersfrom Zanzibar. So he is highly thought of inthe Congo. I personally think he was a braveman.

Council work continues with the newscrutinies and their programme being setup. All rather hotch potch at the momentLDP is still giving headaches especially inBodelwydden with the preservation ofWelsh culture along the A55 corridor. The Good news is 2 roads in your villagesare on the highways programme for next

year starting soon. The road fromLlanferres to Maeshafn, [village road I thinkit is called] and the road from Tafarn yGelyn to top Pen Barras car park [Forestryroad.]The road from Pant Du to the old YHA inMaeshafn [which is in Flintshire] now iswonderful and as I write the Maeshafnvillage should be being resurfaced. Thecounty has got a large resurfacingprogramme for next financial year as theyrealise how appalling the roads are.

Parking on the road up to Cadole has fallenbeneath the radar. The trunk road agencyand the police [Denbighshire] appeartotally uninterested. Perhaps we shouldman the pavement, going from the countrypark to the border ourselves. I am having atrip round with our new policeman BenMadely at the end of March. so I will bringup enforcement of No Parking signs again.Have a good Easter.

You would have had to have beenpretty quick off the mark to catchit, but last Saturday (19th March)was the night of the perigee moonin the UK, with the full moon at itsclosest to the earth for about 18years. Adrian Walls was alert tocatch some excellent pictures asthe moon rose over Craig Harris, but it soon disappeared behindcloud for much of the rest of thenight. There’s more of Adrian’sphotographs on our website and alink to some excellent ones on theBBC's site sent in by viewers in otherparts of the country that had a betterview of it. Apparently coastal walkers

in some parts have been caught outby exceptionally high tides caused bythe moon’s proximity. If you missed it - don’t worry there’llbe another along in about another 20years!

I am sometimes asked, 'what isthere to see at this time of year?' SoI thought I would write ,verybriefly, about what I saw, or heard,in an hour spent in a small woodjust south of Ruthin.

Parking the car, I was greeted bythe 'tsee-tsee' calls of blue tits, thenasal rasp of a greenfinch and I wasserenaded by a song thrush atop ahawthorn bush. Crossing the riverI saw a pair of dippers disporting in'courtship' display for they areamong the early nesters. Growingin cracks in the wall were herbRobert, maidenhair spleenwort andwall rue while at its base, sproutingvigorously, was young garlicmustard which will flower in acouple of weeks to coincide with theemergence of orange tip butterflies,as it is one of its food plants. As Icame to the stile I noticed wildarums(lord and ladies) growingprofusely and dog's mercury alreadyin flower. Beyond the stile werefetid hellebores, which have been inflower for about a month, yellowlesser celandine, white sweet violet, lilac dog violet and white woodanemone, surely proof that spring iswell under way.

I could hear the 'pink-pinking' ofchaffinches and a nuthatch calledloudly, quickly answered by anotherone - both presumably staking outits territory. I stood quietlylistening to the song of a robin whenI was startled by the harsh whip-crack of a wood pigeon clacking itswings together in display flightbefore gliding down with fanned

tail. I listened to the 'teacher-teacher' calls of a great tit andbecame aware of another call whichI did not immediately recognise, then realised it was another greattit call. It is said that if you are ina wood and you hear a call youcannot recognise it will be a great titbecause they have such a widerange of calls.

Polypody fern was growing on adry-stone wall which was covered inluxuriantly growing moss with fern-like leaves, for mosses love thedamp shade of the wood.Honeysuckle draped over the walland hartstongue fern sprouted at itsbase and while I was looking atthem a small rodent dived into afissure at the wall base. Perhaps ashrew or a wood mouse - theglimpse was too brief to tell.

At the top of the wood I gazed acrossthe field at the stand of oak treeswhose upper branches are favouredby purple hairstreak butterflies inJuly. It was here that, on oneoccasion, I saw hawfinches. Theywere, in the past, a feature of thiswood but I have only seen themonce. A pair of cackling magpiesflew over, then the air was rent bythe scream of jays while above threebuzzards circled with mewing cries.A coal tit close by invited me tocome 'to me-to me' or perhaps hewas calling to the wren trillingbehind me.

Continuing through the wood Iarrived at the glade where the wild, native daffodils grow. These small,

Agreat spotted woodpecker workedits way silently up the trunk of anash tree before flying off with

typical undulating flight. Arrivingat the end of the wood I found theground still carpeted with the whiteof snowdrops now coming to an endbut they will soon be replaced by thebluebells already colonising thearea with bright green leaves. As Ileft the wood I saw a large buff-tailed bumblebee questing along asandy bank for a possible nest site. Now I know spring is here. I couldwrite more but space restricts me.
