The LLC Signature Event Committee (SEC) is taking the foundations of the past West Gives Back program to a whole new level. With more people, more initiatives, more shoes, and more giving back, members of the LLC SEC Committee are looking to develop and execute a program that encompasses community development, contribution and service, and engagement through the channels of our Living Learning Communities and other initiatives on campus. With our minds pulled together, we will create an unforgettable experience of giving back for our residents. Weren’t around for West Gives Back 2010 or 2011? Here’s some background information on the awardwinning program: West Gives Back has been a multi part program; "style your sole" with TOMS Shoes, a can food collection for tie dying, and a shoe collection. With every pair of TOMS shoes purchased, TOMS will donate a pair to a child in need. This program used an educational avenue of giving back by engaging our residents to watch and discuss the TOMS Giving documentary with Residential Life staff. With such a great program as the foundation, the LLC SEC Committee is excited to provide additional components that will bring forth the idea of giving through different avenues. Goal: The goal of the LLC Signature Event is to show our residents how easy it is to give back to the community by creating an environment to learn about social justice through an artistic avenue. TOMS Shoe Component: With every pair of TOMS shoes purchased, the company donates a pair to a child in need of shoes. Blank, white canvas shoes will be purchased so that our residents can “style their sole” during the event. We're already over 800 pairs! Kick Off Event The Kick Off Events (KOEs) will be used to inform our residents about our involvement with TOMs Shoes and also to confirm resident participation in the program. During the KOE, the TOMS documentary will be shown, followed by a discussion of human rights, the company, and what Residential Life’s goals are and how we will achieve them. Each LLC will create a banner to present during the LLC Signature Event. Faculty FootPrints: One focus of LLCs is faculty involvement. This program additionally looks to bring in different faculty members to talk about their experiences of giving back through their personal lenses and how everyone can get involved. Other Components: The Shoe Drive: Why not get rid of some lightly worn or gently used shoes since you’re getting new ones? We will teamed up with on campus organizations to help us collect shoes that residents want to donate. Tie Dying: Residents will receive a white t shirt, screenprinted with the LLC Signature Event logo to tie dye when they donate a canned food item. Tabling: Various community service and social justice student organizations will be present at the signature event, discussing with residents the importance of giving back and how they can get involved. With the start of our LLC SEC updates in the Ledger, here's to endless brainstorming, educating ourselves and our residents, and to a program that will not only change the lives of many but will challenge us to be better human beings. RA Spotlight: Divy Kamboj (Sustainability & GreenScience LLC)

Divy Kamboj, CONGRATS, you are the Male RASPOTLIGHT! Though Divy is a new RA this semester, heis hard at work in combining his efforts in his co-‐opand his RA responsibilities. He has reached out tofaculty here at Northeastern for guidance as he, alongwith students from the LLC, create a presentation toinstall wind and solar-‐powered street lamps here oncampus. Also, it isn’t easy to step into a communitythat is already functioning at a high level, but Divy hasmade his presence known with his residents, beingavailable and listening to their ideas for funprogramming and ways to continue to strengthen the

community. Previously, Divy was an RA at Purduebefore coming to Northeastern for grad school.Though he has a good basis of the knowledge neededto succeed as an RA, he is very open to learning theintricacies of the position here, and is always willing tohelp when his coworkers are in need. I believe Divyhas done an excellent job of transitioning into analready established community and new position withease and finesse. He brings a breath of fresh air to thecommunity, and his excitement for sustainabilityinitiatives here on campus and in the world has helpedto get everyone in Light Hall excited about thepossibilities.

Excellent Past LLC ProgramsWHITE: Fireside Chats with NUin: This program was originally intended as a way for the NUin students to interact with asmall group of enthusiastic residents to share their various experiences abroad. As word spread, more and more returningstudents were interested in coming and it became a big mixer of new & returning students talking about their previoussemester & the winter break. Global Frontiers residents love to talk about their experiences (international & domestic) andto catch up with old friends and meet new ones.

STETSONWEST: Resume Workshop: Residents met with Karen Kelley and John Gabriel (co-‐op advisors) to learn how toprepare their resumes to pursue summer internships. Residents came and felt they learned a lot about the purpose andcapabilities of a well written resume. The program was highly interactive and had a solid turnout.

SMENNEDY: NUinWelcome Dinner: The Resident Assistant Staff of the Smennedy Street complex extended a warm welcometo the eighteen new residents of the Smith, Kennedy and Hemenway Street community by inviting them to sit down to dinnerand share their experiences, expectations and fears with making the transition into the NU campus community after spendingtheir first collegiate semester abroad. Though not all of the new residents chose to participate, those that did have taken a bigstep in developing a connection with the staff and in sheddingmany of the fears they had about being new to NU. The programwas not complex but the impact was significant. Well done Smennedy!

HONORS: Super Tuesday: “Super Tuesday: Decision 2012” was a building-‐wide GOP primary/general election to giveresidents “a chance to take a stance”, exploring where the political loyalties of the building lie at the start of 2012, completewith voter registration opportunities, candidate fact sheets, and information on how to get more engaged with the politicalcommunity on campus. The results of the vote were hung in various places in the hall the next day. The program wasinteractive and engaged the students in a topic that is very important now. The RAs also helped the residents get connectedto the university by sharing the opportunities available on campus that involve politics. The residents enjoyed seeing theresults of the vote the next day to see the opinions of the building.
