INTRODUCTION

The universities in Brussels, ULB and VUB, join efforts in the Brussels University Alliance to offer engineering and ICT courses taught in English, French and Dutch on one single campus “La Plaine” – “Oefenplein” in Brussels. The technical department of the Brussels “Haute Ecole Paul-Henri Spaak” (ISIB) joins this alliance. The Brussels University Alliance is the umbrella organization that fosters the collaboration of both Brussels Universities in education, research, development, services to third parties and international relations.

The engineering courses offered cover the whole range of academic curricula including the courses in French “Ingénieur Industriel” and “Ingénieur Civil”, in Dutch “Industrieel Ingenieur” and “Burgerlijk Ingenieur” and in English “Master of Science in Engineering”. So, the Belgian Higher Education landscape is unlocked and organized on a single campus where international students meet.

The courses are of academic level, based on research and prepare the students to become skilled professionals. Donators are granted a privileged contact with the engineering students, together with visibility in the new buildings and involvement in the public activities of the Brussels University Alliance.

JOINT MASTER DEGREES IN ENGINEERING IN ENGLISH

Bruface Since 2011, ULB and VUB collaborate intensively to offer joint master degrees in

Engineering fully taught in English. These joint master courses were given the name Bruface, standing for Brussels Faculty of Engineering. Detailed programmes are available on www.bruface.eu.

In 2013, students from many countries received, for the first time, their joint ULB-VUB diploma in engineering.

The Joint Master Degrees fully taught in English are: MSc in Architectural Engineering; MSc in Chemical and Materials Engineering; MSc in Civil Engineering; MSc in Electromechanical Engineering; MSc in Electronics and Information Technology Engineering; MSc of Applied Sciences and Engineering: Applied Computer Science.

Multicultural Environment The Bruface courses are organized in the multicultural and multilingual environment

of Brussels, the capital of Europe, with 181 nationalities living together in the same city, with 7 different languages spoken by more than 5% of the population. Students are immersed in this environment from the beginning to the end of their courses, opening their minds and kick-starting their international professional career.

Integration of Industrial Engineering The courses in Industrial Sciences, previously organized in Dutch at “Erasmus-

hogeschool Brussel” are now integrated in the VUB Faculty of Engineering since the 1st of October 2013, according to the Flemish “Integration Decree”. This means that it is now the VUB who bears the responsibility to organize the courses on Industrial Sciences and to deliver the diploma’s “Industrieel Ingenieur”. This unique situation in Brussels allows full integration of all the academic curricula in Engineering with full respect of their differences in learning outcomes. The planning is to move

all course activities in Industrial Engineering presently taught at the campus “Kaai” in Anderlecht to the campus “La Plaine”-“Oefenplein” in the new buildings by 2017 to realize this integration. So, the incoming students with a wide variation of talents are prepared for various professional careers in engineering according to the various needs of the society.

The “Haute Ecole Paul-Henri Spaak” has the intention to move its French taught courses in Industrial Sciences from its present location in Brussels city center to the campus “La Plaine”-“Oefenplein”. This will allow the Brussels University Alliance expand its collaboration at the level of Industrial Engineering and to extend the English taught master courses to Industrial Engineering in the scope of Bruface.

FUNDRAISING OBJECTIVE

The objective of the fundraising is to collect the missing funds for two new buildings on the campus “La Plaine” – “Oefenplein”.These are the buildings to accommodate:

The ULB: Ecole Polytechnique de Bruxelles, and the ICT department of the Faculty of Sciences

and the technical department of the “Haute Ecole Paul-Henri Spaak”.

The VUB Faculty of Engineering, in particular the department of Industrial Engineering.

Currently, 11 Mioe are being sought for a total estimated budget of 68 Mioe
