Soils in the boreal forest are typically podzols, gray soils that are thin, acidic, and poor in nutrients.

The boreal forest region ranges in elevation from about 150 m, near the Alberta-Northwest Territories border, to over 1,100 m near the Alberta-British Columbia border. With all types of elevations, there is something for everyone!

Boreal Forest made up of coniferous forests consisting mostly of pines, spruces and larches, so it will be the wonderful green color all year round.

The forests' canopy is dense, forest floor vegetation is thin.

Usually only 50-100 frost free days per year

Temperatures vary from -54 degrees Celsius to 30 degrees Celsius

Typical winter day is -20 degrees Celsius to 18 degrees Celsius on the average summer day.

Coniferous trees are the most predominant plant form. They can shed snow easily, and their waxy needles can retain throughout the winter.

Many mosses and lichens.Animals have warm fur, and need to be able

to survive in the winter and harsh winter conditions.

Characteristics of Plants and Animal Species

Animals have to adapt to the cold and brutal winter conditions.

The Snowshoe Hare has very large paws for running over the snow, and is white to blend in with the snow.

Many birds migrate during the cold winter months.

Some plants go into dormancy during the winter and then bloom during the summers.
