Dear Lanakila Senior Center Ohana:April is a time to honor our volunteers for their tireless efforts and selfless gift of time and talent that they share with others. Over the past year, hundreds of people have helped Lanakila Multi-Purpose Senior Center. We normally have a volunteer appreciation lunch and program on the third Wednesday in April for our volunteers. This year, we honor and thank them in the next few pages of our newsletter. We truly could not have brought so many online, drive-through, and in-person activities to our center members without your help!

This past month has been no exception, holding many classes, presentations, and service projects. Mahalo to Karen Matsunaga, JoAnn Okawa, and Gail Sakihara for helping to coordinate a service project to donate face masks to new student teachers graduating from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Best wishes to our new teachers in their careers as educators.

Our heartfelt thanks to Reverend Tad Iwata, LMPSC Member Lynda Asato, and members of Tenrikyo Honolulu Ko for providing hot lunches on April 8, 2021 to express appreciation to class instructors, Program Committee, reception/front desk/kitchen/garden/tech volunteers, and Participant Advisory Board members for their service to Lanakila Senior Center. Their generosity and thoughtfulness is truly appreciated.

We have been very fortunate to have the assistance of members of the Queen’s Medical Center’s Cancer Survivors Group, Tenrikyo Honolulu Ko, and LMPSC members Aileen Unten, Ann Maeda, Darlene Larimore, Darlene Sardinha and friend, Janet Miyashiro, Judy Greenwell, June Ching, Karen Matsunaga, Linda Ogata, Lynda Asato, Renee Ooka, Reverend Tad Iwata and Suzanne Simmons, who made beautiful cards for our senior center. These cards are now available for $2.00 each. This is a service project of LMPSC and we hope you will purchase and send these homemade cards to a friend, family member, neighbor, business, non-profit organization, government office, and others in the community to let them know how special they are to you or to thank them for their important work in the community. “Bringing Joy” is a community service project of Lanakila Senior Center and the hope is to inspire people to spread a bit of “ALOHA” to someone special and bring them joy by this random act of kindness. The cards can be picked up in the month of April by calling our office at 847-1322 and arranging with our staff a day and time for you to pick up the cards.

Much thanks to Hawaii Tax Help and Financial Empowerment Solutions, under the leadership of Susan Tamanaha and volunteers Leeward Kalani, Leslie Tanoue, Rita Pregana, Gail Oshita, Romine Crawford, Revelyn Taylan and Pauline You, they were able to help over 100 people prepare tax returns for free in the months of February and March 2021.

Mahalo a nui loa to Mary Sueda and Jean Sugihara for freshening up the concession and thrift shop; Arlene Nagamine, Lenora Springer, and Teri June Amurofor continuing to help beautify our gardens; Jane Higa, Flora Nakasone, Janet Ito, Jane Yamada and Clifford Gakiya for cleaning the Craft Room; and Marty Kailifor making our center yard and building so clean and beautiful to support our custodian. All of these efforts are in preparation for a modified reopening of Lanakila Senior Center in the next few months. The date for reopening has not been decided yet. I will send out a robocall to everyone when we receive the reopening date from Catholic Charities Hawaii.

A big mahalo to Kapiolani Community College’s Community Health Workers Program’s practicum students Stephanie Cachola and Cristina Cordeiro for their tremendous help in calling all of our senior center members to make sure everyone who wanted to be vaccinated was able to get assistance. Our heartfelt thanks to May Rose Lazarte, a doctoral student with the University of St. Augustine, for supporting the senior center over the past 4 months by surveying members who were active with the center during the pandemic to see how they were doing and how the senior center could help support their members enjoy a good quality of life through its programs.

Thank you to Corinne Chan and Colette Young for doing an outstanding job creating a power point and live cooking demonstration to make Jai; Kayla Lim-Tam for teaching us how to make Manju; Dianne Lim-Tam for teaching us how to create beautiful water color paintings and cards, doodling botanicals, and calligraphy; Janet Miyashiro for teaching us how to do Iris-folding cards; Diane Terada for leading us in a virtual BINGO game; and our many community partners –Gerald Yahata for hosting the Ikigai series on happiness and gratitude; Steve Sue and Brannon Yamauchi for teaching us how to grow lemon trees and the many benefits of lemon trees in sequestering carbon and helping our environment; Chef Paul Onishi and Hawaiian Electric Company for hosting cooking shows using the HECO cook book recipes; Ford Ebesugawa from the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum for the interesting aviation-related heroic stories; Joni Domingues, Caroline Conlan, an Rachel Reynon from Legal Aid Society for educating us on important legal matters; Kyle Maschoff from Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific for increasing our knowledge of rehabilitative services available to the public; Dawn Pasikala from National Kidney Foundation of Hawaii to Knock Out Gout; Christine Spencer from Alzheimer’s Association, Hawaii Chapter, who shares with us 10 Ways to Love Our Brain; Dr. Michael Cheang from the University of Hawaii at Manoa who helps us learn about many interesting topics on aging; and many others for providing such interesting and wonderful learning opportunities for our center members and seniors from other senior programs across the State.

Kudos to Sharon Nakai, Diana Kawaguchi, Dr. John Char, Nohea Chang, Lenora Springer, and others who have shared inspirational, funny, and amazing videos that uplift our spirits during this pandemic. We LOVE AND APPRECIATE ALL OF YOU!!!!!

By Diana Kawaguchi

SHIKI NU CHUI SHIJI SHIRU KURASURUApril being the 4th month of the year is named after the Greek Goddess, Aphrodite.

Most well-known date in April is April fool’s day on the 1st of April. April fool’s day is a day when practical jokes or tricks are played on unsuspecting people, so be careful not to have any pranks played on you! April 1st also celebrates Fun day and One cent day. The One cent which has borne Abraham Lincoln’s face since 1909, cost the U.S. Mint, Two cents to make.

This year Easter Sunday falls on April 4th. This is a major Christian holiday, to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ 3 days after his death. Easter is considered to be a moveable event, and is celebrated on a Sunday after the 1st full moon of the Spring Equinox (the time or date, 2x a year, at which the sun crosses the celestial equator. This is when day and night are of approximately equal length).

WE HAVE BEEN HOME OVER 1 YEAR ago since the global epidemic. Who could even imagine this would ever happen to us? One year of the covid19 pandemic paralyzed America and the rest of the World. Everything came to a standstill, and all our lives changed. Many losses were incurred. Our everyday lives and attitudes changed. Things we took for granted on a daily basis, hugging, social activities, school, work, family gatherings, etc. all changed. Many restaurants and business’s closed, and many lost their jobs. Many losses were incurred. THIS WAS A WAR AGAINST A VIRUS!

Precautionary measures had to be taken on a daily basis, constant washing of hands with soap and water, use of antiseptic sanitizers, 6ft. social distancing, and wearing of masks when going out. We were exposed to the world of “ZOOM” to attend various classes, and presentation by various organizations

Through all of this, we are thankful and grateful to the many countless people and organizations, who helped to make our adjustment to this new life style a little bearable.

We are forever grateful to Suzanne Chun Oakland, and her staff, Iris, Riva and Cookie, for working so hard in providing the many zoom classes to our members, to keep us active, healthy and well informed during this difficult times. We thank Lodi for keeping the Lanakila Multi-Purpose Center building and grounds, clean and safe till we can all return to it again.

April is derived from the Latin “aperies” meaning “to open”, referring to the opening or blossoming of flowers and trees. There is a saying “April showers bring May flowers, so if the rain of April ever gets you down, never forget the silver lining!”

Who would have thought after 1 year of working together to overcome this virus, there is now a vaccine which gives us HOPE, and back to Normalization again! Valuable of all lessons is KINDNESS.

“Shiki nu chui shiji shiru kurasuru” which is an Okinawan proverb meaning“Let’s live helping each other in this world”

I sincerely apologize for the tardiness of my message, I somehow thought we had already sent a message of thanks to the LMPSCladies who sewed wheelchair and walker bags for our Kuakini Home residents. I have Rosie Ramiro’s email address, so I sent her an email to thank her for her continued dedication to sewing items for Kuakini’s Health Care Team and the long term care residents.

Thanks, Iris, for delivering the bags to Kuakini. We are extremely grateful to your sewing ladies who recently donated a large selection of handmade cloth bags which our residents are using for their wheelchairs, walkers, and bed rails.

· Linda Yara – 34 bedrail bags· Judy Greenwell – 8 wheelchair/walker bags, 6 bedrail bags· Mary Sueda – 19 wheelchair/walker bags· Rosie Ramiro – 31 wheelchair/walker bags, 84 scrub caps· Amy Bratt– 17 wheelchair/walker bags, 12 scrub caps

There was a very nice variety of cloth and prints that were used to sew the bags. Some of the prints were so beautiful and cutethat my staff and I wished that WE needed the bags! J

These items were expertly sewn and so professional looking. The residents are very excited about the bags.

Please let the sewists know that the Kuakini Home residents are very happy with their new treasures. Also, the scrub caps that Rosie has been sewing for the staff are greatly appreciated and useful. Staff enjoy deciding which days to wear their matching caps.

We are so blessed and thankful for the generous community support that we have received throughout the pandemic from organizations and individuals such as the Lanakila Multi Purpose Senior Center members. We know a lot of time, dedication andeffort have been put into their various sewing projects.

I have attached some photos of the items we have received – you may share it with your members as you see fit.

Thanks again for your donations!

Please continue to stay well and be safe!

Thank you very much on behalf of the UH-Manoa COE teacher candidates for the very generous donation of face masks by the seniors at the Lanakila Multi-Purpose Senior Center. The enclosed note with each mask was especially heartwarming and supportive. By gifting these teachers-to-be with bags containing teaching supplies, food items, and personal protective equipment, we hope to provide support during these dire economic times, acknowledge their commitment to the teaching profession, and promote educational excellence, one of the tenets of our international honorary women’s organization Alpha Delta Kappa, along with Altruism and World Understanding. In our successful campaign, we received over $4,500 in monetary donations as well as an abundance of donated goods from more than a hundred individual and group donors throughout our Hawai‘i Alpha Delta Kappa chapters. In addition, the Pearl Harbor Rotary Club endorsed the project and made a generous monetary donation as well.Because of the generosity of all our donors, Project Kako‘o can continue with Phase II in April to support more teacher candidates. We also now envision reaching out to others interested in supporting our future teachers in the UH-Manoa College of Education.Mahalo,‘Alohi Okamura (HA∆K Nu Chapter) and Carol Emerson (HA∆K Xi Chapter)Project Kako‘o Coordinators
