License Granted for Wilmington Uranium Enrichment Plant

First-of-a-Kind Facility Licensed by NRC to Make Laser Enrichment of Uranium a RealityOn September 25, GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy’s (GEH)Global Laser Enrichment (GLE) announced receipt of itslicense from the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC)to build a ground-breaking laser enrichment facility on the1,600-acre site of the company’s global headquarters inWilmington.

The license enables GLE to build a first-of-its-kind uraniumenrichment facility using lasers conceived of by Australiantechnology company SILEX and developed by GLE experts. The company has worked with the NRC, the USDepartments of State and Energy and independent non-proliferation experts for several years to ensure the securityof this technology.

“Receiving our NRC license is a tremendousaccomplishment and strong testament to everyone involvedin this project,” said Chris Monetta, president and CEO ofGlobal Laser Enrichment. “The technology we’ve developedcould be one of the keys to the nation’s long-term energysecurity. At a minimum, it could provide a steady supply ofuranium enriched right here in the U.S. to the country’snuclear reactors.”

The next step in the process is for the company to make acommercialization decision. This decision will be based onseveral factors.

Shades of GreySome situations are viewed in black and white; right and wrong. Yet, many people think situations also have a grey area where solutions are not so easily discerned. This is not just about the choices people make, but the thought process they go through to arrive at their decisions.

Submitted for Your Discussion & ConsiderationRecently, a NC person walked their dog in front of a publicbuilding, and then walked away without cleaning up thedog’s mess.

The reaction of the folks who work there was to post a photoof the person and their dog on their official Facebook page.

This type of “public shaming” isnot a new concept. Back to thebeginnings of America examplesmay be found. The pillory in themiddle of town may be gone, andparents hanging signs on theirchildren to shame them raiseseyebrows, but with technologieslike the World Wide Web and socialmedia, the shaming can easily bedone and reaches far.

What do you think of posting embarrassing photos online toshame someone? Do you think it makes a difference ifposted on an official municipal service or government page?If you saw a photo of someone you knew online beingshamed, would you blame the person or feel embarrassed forthem? How do you feel about this type of “punishment”?

Chuckle of the IssueTom, Dick and Harry went out to dinner. After dinner, they returned totheir hotel. The hotel was 600 stories high and their rooms were at the top.

Unfortunately, the elevator was not working. They made a plan to pass thetime. For the first 200 stories, Tom would tell jokes. The second 200stories, they decided, Dick would tell a happy story. Lastly, Harry wouldtell a sad story the rest of the way.

With this plan, the three of them started up the steps.

After 2 hours it was Harry's turn. He turned to his friends and said, “Okguys, here’s a sad story. I forgot the keys downstairs.”
