The news is often filled with stories related to our aging population and the challenges it poses to society, and I had it brought into sharp focus on a recent visit to a dementia café. Dementia is a term often used to describe the symptoms of over �00 different individual medical conditions that affect the chemistry of the brain. It covers familiar conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease through to less well known diseases such as Korsakoff ’s syndrome and Binswangers disease.A diagnosis of dementia can be a frightening and upsetting time, both for the individual and for friends and family. When someone is diagnosed with dementia, they should be encouraged to remain as independent as possible and continue to enjoy their usual activities and occupations, but there is a huge amount of advice and support available for planning for later stages of the condition. Considering the future can allay fears and worries both for sufferers and for family members.One great service that is coordinated by the Alzheimer’s society is the Dementia Café. Dementia

News from Kirsty Williams MPCafés provide a safe, comfortable and supportive environment for people with dementia and their carers to socialise. Led by qualified specialists and supported by local volunteers, these regular social groups improve well-being and reduce isolation for whole families. As well offering a range of fun and engaging activities, Dementia Cafés give both carers and people with dementia a chance to get information and advice and talk to others with similar problems. Understandably, lots of stories you will have heard about dementia, whether it be in the news or through friends or relatives, concentrate on patients. All too often we don’t hear enough about the stories of carers who need support and care as well. Dementia cafés are a great way of carers being able to meet each other in a supportive environment where they can share stories and experiences and speak to people who understand exactly what they are going through.More information, advice and support about dementia can be obtained from the Alzheimer’s society either at www.alzheimers.org.uk or by calling 0300 222 �� 22.

This is the fourth Brecon Plant Fair. It is to be held on Saturday 17th May and this year it is in aid of SSAFA, the Military Charity that supplies lifelong support for our forces and their families, and Brecon Cathedral. It will be held at Treberfydd (pictured above) by kind invitation of Carla and David Raikes.

The plants on offer will be perennials, shrubs and trees, white and silver plants, as well as annuals, vegetable plants, herbs, houseplants, produce and a white elephant stall. There will also be coffee, home-made light lunches and a wine bar. The hosts, Carla and David, will give guided tours of the Grade � Listed Gothic Revival house, on the hour from �� o’clock. The adjacent Walled Garden Nursery, run by Alison Sparshatt, which has recently been revitalized is another interesting place to visit and where you will also be able to buy plants. Carla, David and Alison will be giving a percentage to the Charities. There are also two small art exhibitions, one in the conservatory of the house and the second in the walled garden. Last but not least, Army Cadets will be on hand to barrow purchases to cars!

Planting – At the Walled Garden we are really thinking about creating structure through the seasons with trees and shrubs as the backdrop to the perennial planting that will follow.

From April to June we will see magnolia, lilac and fruit trees in blossom. Sour fruits, Morello cherries, gooseberries and currants will be planted in the shade of the North facing wall.

These can then be underplanted with shade loving plants that will draw attention to themselves and lighten the darker spaces. We will also plant strong edible landscaping plants such as Orach, Angelica, Cardoons and Fennel to add height and drama to the flower beds.

There was no white rabbit but maybe a grey hare in George Osbourne’s red box? Whether you are a sceptic or not the changes will have a big impact on the future pension landscape.

From April 20�5, savers will be given total freedom over how they withdraw pension money. In the meantime, there will be increased flexibility.

Previously all members of “defined contribution” pensions (as opposed to final salary) could access 25% of their pension as a tax-free lump sum with the remainder used to purchase an annuity (guaranteed income for life) or could enter “income drawdown”. With income drawdown the pension remains invested and the member can take a gradual income from the fund. This option was usually only available for members with over £�00,000 to invest which left many having to annuitise.

From now until April 20�5 pension providers will offer the option of income drawdown to members with smaller pension pots of around £25,000 and the amount of income that can be drawn will increase. The option of annuitising will still be available and will still be appropriate for some members.

The proposed changes from April 20�5 will effectively lift all restrictions on how a defined contribution pension is drawn. It has been touted by the press that pensioners will fritter away all of their pension savings with the increased flexibility. We see this as very unlikely. There would be a large income tax charge if drawing the whole pension fund immediately and more importantly a member who has saved throughout their working lives for retirement is likely to be more prudent.

We welcome the increased flexibility and think this will create many retirement planning opportunities.

The Biodiversity Information Service for Powys and Brecon Beacons National Park (BIS) is one of four Local Record Centres (LRCs) in Wales and provides a mechanism for collating, sharing and utilising the wealth of biological data and knowledge, which exists in this part of Wales. The aim of BIS is to make information on wildlife, their habitats and important sites, readily available to those who need it. This will ensure that decisions, which may affect the natural heritage in the Powys and Brecon Beacons National Park area, are made with the best available knowledge. Since 200� BIS has collated and electronically stored over �.5 million wildlife records, many of which have been collected by the local voluntary recording community. Bringing all this information into one system enables clear presentation of the data for all their users and also facilitates its analysis and manipulation. This information has been made available to its partners, local recorders, commercial environmental consultants and the public through the BIS enquiry service.

Originally a lot of these records came from the nature conservation organisations but now over 50% of wildlife records in BIS database come from local experts and casual recorders. Therefore an important role for BIS is to support the local recording community and to encourage the public to become involved and record wildlife. With that in mind, BIS has recently developed public on-line tools which will now be available on its new website to be launched by Kirsty Williams AM on Monday 9th June 2014 at ��am. put a point on the map anywhere in Wales and it will show you a summary list of wildlife records held by the LRC, in that �km square. If you wish to add to those records, the BIS Wildlife Recording Database (WiReD) makes it easy for you to record your wildlife sightings online and view the records on an interactive map. Sending your records to the Local Record Centre ensures it is available to contribute to local and national wildlife conservation.

Wild in May Protectingwildlife for the future

The Holly Blue is a tiny butterfly. Its closed wings are the size of my thumb-nail, chalky with black dots below, and bright blue above. The dark edges on this one show that it is a female. Settled in a sunny spot she may bask unnoticed, only catching your attention in quick silvery flight.

Butterflies out now have emerged from pupae formed last autumn. These females lay eggs on the buds of Holly which the green caterpillars eat. When this early generation pupates and emerges to fly in late summer Holly is no longer suitable so they lay eggs on the fresh buds of Ivy instead. And so the cycle continues.

Holly Blues have been extending their range northward, perhaps in response to climate change. In Wales they are now widespread where their common food plants grow but numbers vary from year to year. They are likely to be among the butterflies in the wild flower meadow and lovely gardens at Caer Beris Manor in Builth Wells which open for the National Gardens Scheme on Bank

Spring Recipe: from Janet Williams Chef at Pilgrim’s Tearooms

Serves 6

Preparation time: 20 mins

Cooking time: 1 hr

You’ll need:

8oz self raising flour

4oz sunflower margerine

Scant 2 tablespoons

cold water

I medium onion,

finely diced

approx �lb grated

mature cheddar

about �2 baby leeks

(depending on size)

6 large free range

eggs

milk

approx 8oz St Illtyd

cheese

freshly ground

black pepper

Baby Leeks and St Illtyd Quiche

Light and fluffy free range quiche with

young Welsh leeks and delicious local

cheese, perfect in small slices as

a starter or wonderful with a salad

as a summer lunch.

What next:

1. Sift the flour into a large bowl and rub in the marg

with your fingertips. Cut in the cold water then roll

out thinly to line a 10” flan dish (I use self-raising flour

as the pastry rolls out easily, but remember to keep it

thin as it does rise). If sunflower marg is used it isn’t

necessary to grease the flan dish.

2. Sweat the finely diced onion gently in oil until soft

and scatter on the pastry base. Then in the same pan

sweat the whole baby leeks until soft.

3. Half-fill the quiche with grated mature cheddar cheese

and lay the baby leeks on top.

4. Lightly beat the eggs in a mixing jug and bring up to

� pint with milk. Pour eggs over the cheese and leeks

then crumble St Illtyd all over the top. Season with

freshly ground black pepper (there’s no need to add

salt as there’s enough in the cheeses)

5. Bake in a pre-heated oven (�50º – �60º / 300º – 325º

/ gas mark 2 – 3 ) for about an hour until just set and

slightly golden.

To Serve:

Serve with a salad of fresh mixed leaves, Pilgrims

dressing and home-baked Miracle Bread

Photographic artworks Mark is a photographer who has specialised in photographing trees and woodlands to produce unique artworks.

These artworks are quite unlike traditional photographs and always generate a great deal of interest, eliciting comments such as “Surely that’s not a photograph!” This is because Mark prints his images onto a highly-textured “watercolour” paper and then mounts them using a variety of styles and materials, from float frames to his own “tiling” technique on a painted stretched canvas “frame”. These works are all displayed without glass to enable the textures to be fully appreciated.

Mark is holding two free exhibitions in May. One in the beautiful setting of The Old Conservatory at Treberfydd House, near Llangorse, where he will be showing his large artworks and the other in the convivial surroundings of The Dragon Inn, Crickhowell. See What’s On for details.

Some great ways to get toys that are free or low-cost are to get crafty and repurpose used items around your home. You can decide whether to use odds and ends you find around your home or to invest a bit of money in some craft supplies to feed your toddler’s growing interests.

Rattles from Plastic BottlesUse an empty plastic bottle filled with beads, buttons, a bell and some colourful bits of paper to decorate with strips of colored tape.

Old ElectronicsAn old remote control, calculator, or computer keyboard can be cleaned up with all the hazards (small parts, batteries, etc.) removed. You might find that your little one will be less inclined to bang away at your working and newer electronics if they have their own toy laptop!

The word Rosemary is derived from the Latin words ros (dew) and marinus (sea) – ‘Dew of the Sea’. Rosemary belongs to the Lamiaceae, commonly known as the mint family.

Rosemary is a bush perennial that grows abundantly in the Mediterranean area as well as in isolated areas of Turkey, Lebanon and Egypt. It is a shrubby, evergreen bush which can grow up to 4 feet high with green-grey, needle shaped leaves and pale blue / lilac flowers which are attractive to bees. As the plant matures the stems will become woody in texture. It is usually hardy to zero degrees Fahrenheit and many consider it best to grow it in a pot in the summer and move it indoors in the severe winter months.

Its bold flavour and slightly resinous, camphor like aromatic qualities have helped it to remain popular throughout centuries of use. Rosemary likes sun, as much as possible; and dry well-drained poor soil. It will not thrive in moisture laden areas of the garden. You can grow it from rooted parts of the existing plant or from cuttings. It requires very little water once it is established. It responds well to

being pot grown and tolerates indoor growing conditions. If you prune the rosemary after it has flowered it will tend to take on a much bushier form.

On the skin, it can help to ease congestion, puffiness and swelling and can also be used for acne, dermatitis and eczema.

Llaneglwys – small but activeLlaneglwys was originally a small cluster of farms on land administered from Herefordshire by Abbey Dore. In the 20th century the present village took shape when the Brycheiniog Forest was created after the First World War by the Forestry Commission. Cottages were built in the �930s and houses in the �950s to accommodate the many forestry workers and their families. In the days of labour-intensive forestry after the Second World War, the village and the surrounding farms were a thriving community with its own primary school. In �952, the Forestry Commission acquired a large Nissen Hut to serve as a community and social centre for the local area. Some local residents still remember the woodwork classes, Bible classes, parties and whist drives held there. Eventually, the forest, the houses and the communal facilities were sold off. After protracted negotiations, privatisation was finally completed in the mid �990s, when a Llaneglwys Community Association was created to administer the private water and sewage facilities, some communal garages and land and what was now referred to as the Village Hall.

By this time, the Village Hall had fallen into disrepair. Was it to be abandoned to the elements or could it be resurrected? The Association decided to apply for a lottery grant to halt the decline. Since then, they have had 5 grants to carry out major work to bring the building up to modern standards. The

old wooden chapel chairs have finally been replaced with comfortable seating and the blackboard and chalk with Powerpoint projection.

The thinking behind the refurbishment was to organize events to entertain and instruct by drawing on the vast range of talent and special expertise in the Brecon/Builth area – choirs, poets, writers, musicians, lecturers, talks followed by discussions, etc., and to create a programme of interest to as many local people as possible. This ambitious aim has proved a great success. A selection of recent events illustrates the range: Aberhonddu Male Choir, Electric cars, Islamic art and Beekeeping.

The 20�4 programme commenced in April with an illustrated talk on protected landscapes. The next event is on Sunday May �st at 7.30pm with an Open Mic event. News from local WIsPowys Brecknock Federation of Women’s Institutes

Much publicity has been given to International Women’s Day and Powys Brecknock Federation decided that it would celebrate this occasion by organising an event. Members were asked to nominate someone within the organisation who in their opinion has contributed a great deal to their communities and to the W.I.

Three categories were designated, for members who had worked for the benefit of their communities, for those who had supported charities, and finally the “unsung heroine”.

The judges were Ann Jones, N.F.W.I Wales Chairman, and Marylyn Haines Evans, N.F.W.I trustee and Chair of Public Affairs, to whom all nominations were sent. The winners were to be announced of Friday �4th

March. On that day Ann Jones was present to give the adjudication and disclose the names of the winners. She was welcomed by Cheryl Williams, Chair of Public Affairs and organisation Committee and was invited to announce the winners after telling everyone what their criteria was. She recommended that people making the nominations should give as much information as possible about the nominees, Ann said “always assume that the judge is twp”.

The member who had contributed the most to her community was Elizabeth Tyler, Abercraf W.I. As well as being a hard working member of her W.I, she supports her church, The young farmers Club and organised events for her community.

The member deemed to have worked tirelessly for a charity was County Chairman, Margery Davies, Llangynidr W.I. The charity she supports id ClicSargent Cancer Fund. She arranges money raising

events and organises the annual Carol concert at St David’s Hall, Cardiff which is always a “Sell Out”. She is a dynamic member of the W.I, working energetically for the Federation, is a staunch church member, and helps to run community events in Llangynidr.

The third winner to be announced for the “Unsung Heroine” category was Margaret Rees , Cradoc W.I. She is a loyal church member, organises various concerts each year and co-ordinated the annual flower festival and coffee morning held every Jazz Festival at her church. She devoted a great deal of time looking after her family, especially her grandchildren, is a splendid W.I member, visits the sick and has been described as a “cheerful caring member of the community”.

After the presentation of scrolls to the winners, it was announced that Margaret was awarded the title ”W.I Member of the Year”. Ann jones presented her with a delightful crystal glass cut bowl.

After the awards ceremony members of the Public Affairs & Organisation Committee served hot soup to the audience and this was followed by fruit crumbles and trifles.

County Chairman, Margery Davies thanked everyone who had contributed to the success of the evening and a special thanks was extended to Ann Jones, who had travelled a considerable distance to be present to give her constructive comments, and to make the presentations. She received a delightful arrangement of fresh flowers from Cheryl Williams before returning home.

NIBBLING A WAY OUT: EMERGING FROM ANOREXIA

Joanna Jones has been restricted by the eating disorder anorexia for forty-five years. She thought it was a life-long sentence. Then, last year, she was referred to the South East Wales Eating Disorder Service where she received the relatively new Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT).

Come and hear how Joanna is leaving behind forty-five years of disordered thinking and eating and is finding a new life. ‘With DBT, she enthuses, ‘I’m nibbling a way out of the restrictive cocoon of anorexia and coming to talk to the Friends is an opportunity to spread my wings a little further!’

Back in March we announced we wouldn’t be running the Car Boot Sales in Hay-on-Wye during 20�4 ... Since then I have received several phone calls per week, many many emails and people stopping me in the street – all disappointed with the news.

With this in mind we have come up with a compromise. We have now planned four Sales, each on the first Saturday of the month, starting in June and ending in September. Please see our advert on page � for more details.

Many years ago when the Car Boot Sales started up there was a lovely community feel – let’s get that back. Booters used to have ‘clear outs’ to the benefit of the buyers. Over the years I picked up some right bargains, a football table for James being the most memorable. Not to mention the many fruit and vegetable plants that provide for us year upon year.

If you’ve been thinking of doing a boot yourself, perhaps your children have outgrown their toys and clothes? Or maybe you can’t get into your spare room? We try to create a very relaxed feel to our Car Boot Sales, giving you 45 minutes to set up without buyers asking questions, buyers will not be allowed to enter the site until 9.30am.

Please do support this local event, whether you’re a seller or a buyer. A donation goes to the local School at the end and any profit goes back into this community magazine.

My dad and I look forward to kicking things off on Saturday 7th June. Here’s hoping to dry weather, local support, dosh for the sellers and bargains for the buyers.
