in february, scottish and southern energy opened the doors of their thatcham training Centre to local students as part of apprenticeship Week.

Among those who attended were EBP West Berkshire’s World of Work (WoW) students who spent the day exploring the facilities and learning about the career opportunities available at SSE for school leavers, apprentices and graduates. The students were given advice on preparing CVs, writing application letters and interviews.

WoW helps students, who are at risk of becoming disengaged with learning, find a career path. Of the 38 students that completed the course last year, 34 went on to further education or an apprenticeship.

The West Berks Chamber of Commerce is keen to provide business engagement opportunities for all its members. To support that effort we will be hosting a programme of networking events throughout 2012 in West Berkshire. The focus will be very much on business themes with these events being supplemented by complimentary network events outside of normal working hours.

The Chamber Council in West Berks continues to lobby and support for business interests with its members. It also seeks to provide comment on economic development in the region so that there is a balanced view as West Berks competes for inward investment and re-investment opportunities.

Sleek and Chic

Fitted simple designs in sumptuous fabrics give that old Hollywood glamour look. Keep things simple and let the dress do the talking – remember that accessories can add sparkle and you don’t want to overdo it. I love Alan Hannah’s Savannah for its ‘Hollywood Red Carpet Glamour’. It’s a sophisticated dress in a duchess silk that makes you feel, glamorous and special.

Full but not fussy

Silk organzas, boat necklines, sleeves and delicate straps are the ultimate in creating a classic and romantic look. Delicate details such as bows and broaches add interest but keep things simple. A line and full bias cut skirts add fullness without weight and embraces bridal. It’s a look which is timeless, classic and feminine.

9PLEASE MENTION BUZZ WHEN RESPONDING TO AN ADVERT

There is a growing ‘gorgeous vintage trend’, not so much tea cups and bunting which is still the quintessentially English favourite but another that oozes glamour.

Brides want a modern take on 1950’s Grace Kelly vintage quality and style, nothing too overstated but a certain sparkle that will make their wedding day one to remember.

In 2012 bouquets are smaller; lily of the valley is huge, as it was in the 1950’s and following Kate’s style at her wedding to Prince William last Spring.

Freesia and stephanotis are popular choices for their scent. Calla lily still epitomises elegance, but probably the most exciting bouquet is the revival of the bridal cocktail size posy. Its tiny clusters of mixed seasonal flowers make a delicate tapestry in your chosen colours, flowing ribbons and perhaps a diamante pin here and there for a tiny touch of glitz.

The overall effect of a 50's glamour themed wedding is one of elegance and romance and this should transpire in the photographs. Think Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn and the iconic photographs that star them, the emphasis is on beauty and romance.

There is something about the photographs from this era that encapsulates the elegance and grace of the time, which is what is so appealing as a wedding theme.

As a wedding photographer, a 50's themed wedding will get your creative juices flowing with the opportunity to come up with portrait images of the bride and groom that are creative, full of romance and yet elegant. Couple this with

the opportunity to capture the little details, peep toe shoes, lace, pearls and maybe even a juke box, pink lemonade really is a photographer's dream and will be sure to get you a beautiful collection of images that will really have the wow factor.

The nice thing about a 50's themed wedding is getting photographs of all aspects of the

wedding, with each being just as important. The style details of your wedding, your guests enjoying it all and some beautiful portraits of you and your groom that will become your own iconic photographs!

By Lesley Pattinson at Memories Thru a Lens

Ivory and white are the bouquet colours that always dominate but brides who want colour are not afraid of intensity. Draw inspiration from nature’s vibrant greens. Pink is still the ‘it’ colour. Slate grey is replacing chocolate, and lavender is making an appearance. Fashion will entice brides to consider vibrant shades of fuchsia, coral and lime green.

Dresses, in particular, are very retro bringing us designs to flatter the female form. Within the 40’s influence are pretty floral prints, slightly puffy sleeves with attractive necklines and hemlines to suit all ages. The 50’s look

brings us both the swishy skirts with the smaller waist being emphasised and also the fabulous glamorous “Bardot” look with slim line skirts and shapely tops, in gorgeous satins and silks which look good on the curvaceous figure. The simple, well cut

Wherever you look these days, there is a nod to the best of the past. Style and glamour abounds. From successful television programs like 'Mad Men' and 'Downton Abbey', to home wares with a distinctive aura of something familiar in some of our distant memories. The world of fashion is no exception.

lines of the 60’s are also evident giving a chic uncluttered look. This works particularly well for the more petite ladies, you just have to think of Audrey Hepburn to get the idea. The 70’s are still evident in the flamboyant prints and the long flowing skirts of the maxis. You no longer have to wear trousers if you want to cover up your legs.

Many dresses have a slightly higher waist line, almost empire line, which is very forgiving for any woman conscious of her tummy. If you prefer covered arms but the dress doesn’t have sleeves, then a shrug or bolero will work very well too; in fact many sleeveless dresses now come with either of these.

What better excuse can there be to indulge yourself with a new outfit than an invite to a wedding, the races or some other equally

exciting occasion. Of course, ideally you would like to wear an outfit again and again and this is where the dress up/ dress down scenario is invaluable. Look for styles that with simple additions of a jacket, pretty bag and shoes, hat or fascinator and complementary

jewellery will make the transition from every day to something spectacular. Even the plainest of outfits can be made into a show stopper with the right accessories, especially if you require a hat or fascinator for the event.

A growing number of hats have become smaller and more popular due to the patronage of the Duchess of Cambridge. These work particularly well with the revival of the vintage inspired clothes. You can certainly look over your shoulder to past decades and pick and choose a look which is perfect for you. There is plenty to experiment and have fun with.

To create an individual look and not become a brand clone, you should look to the independent shops as well. They will not only offer a personal service but a greater variety of labels and you might be surprised to discover that many a time they can save you money too.

Born in Reading, Chris has always been drawn to the area where he spent his childhood, and has never quite left. Even when he was working at a TV station in the Midlands, Chris still returned home on weekends to see his parents in Reading and grandfather in Bucklebury.

“The great thing about this part of the world is it’s incredibly untouched. I used to walk the fields with my granddad and I now live five minutes from the river Kennet” says Chris, who is an avid fisherman and has even had an iPhone App named after him called “Fishing with Chris Tarrant”.

TeachingAfter finishing his honours degree in English Literature, Chris went on to teach English at an all boy’s school in the East End. Chris says

From “Tiswas” to “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?”, Chris Tarrant is probably one of the most well known British TV presenters of our time. The "Berkshire boy" has taken the time to talk to Buzz about his accomplishments.

“I was teaching 14 year old boys known as the ‘Easter leavers’, which meant by an accident of birth they could leave a term early. They just couldn’t wait to get out so teaching them about Shakespeare wasn’t a great success.”

“I only taught for about a year and I wasn’t unhappy to leave. The actual job of getting kids to understand things was incredibly rewarding but those moments were quite few and far between,” he adds.

Chris not only worked at the school, he also lived on the grounds for six months. Following an argument with his then girlfriend, Chris found himself homeless, “I parked outside and slept in my minivan. I could make coffee, do my marking in the back and I even had my mail delivered.

The headmaster used to think I was the most wonderful teacher because I was always early.”

First breakAfter leaving teaching, Chris went on to become a researcher at the Central office of Information, an agency which makes government commercials. Chris says “I just remember seeing a presenter doing his piece to camera and thinking that it didn't look very difficult. I wrote a letter to every television company in Britain, most of whom had the good sense to put it in the bin but ATV gave me a job. I stayed there for about three years on a weekly contract.”

He adds “When I started I was trying to be like every other presenter, but I was hopeless. Then I started to get all these light weight interviews with complete ‘nutters’, like the man who lived with a pigeon on his head, and I loved it. I think because of this I was kind of an obvious choice for “Tiswas”.”

Capital RadioWhilst doing some TV work in London, Chris received a call from Capital Radio (now Capital FM)

about presenting their Sunday show. After about a year he moved on to a daily show and then ended up presenting the breakfast show, “When "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" went through the roof something had to give so I stopped doing the radio, however, I do prefer radio as you can say the first thing that comes into your head which gives you an edge.”

Chris says “”Tiswas” started my life and "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" has won many awards but I’m probably proudest of the Capital breakfast show because we were last in the ratings and within a year we turned it around and became easily the most listened to station in London.”

"Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?""Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” started in 1998 and has become one of the most successful quiz shows of all time. In recent years it's moved from members of the public to celebrity shows, raising money for many charities, however, one of the moments which will always stay in Chris's mind was the case of the cheating major, “They were going to do a movie about it. They asked me and I said that whatever they write won't be as good as the real thing."

In 2003, British Army Major Charles Ingram, his wife Diana and one of that edition's Fastest Finger contestants, Tecwen Whittock, were convicted of cheating to win the £1 million prize when Ingram was a contestant on the show in September 2001. The allegation was that when host Chris asked a question, Whittock would cough in order to guide Ingram to the correct answer.

Chris remembers the major well, “He wasn’t bright. He got to £4,000

and he only had one life line left. Normally, when the contestant reaches £500,000, I remind them that if they get the next question wrong they will lose £450,000 and it doesn't matter who you say that to they will panic, except the major. It only occurred to me months later that he never even blinked.”

Chris appeared as a witness during the court case and says “I think by the time they got to me they were bored. I was asked a question and when I gave my answer the judge leaned across and asked me if that was my final answer."

Personal lifeChris has four children from his two previous marriages. Fia, from his first marriage, has gone into the same line of work as her father and now appears on a radio show in Spain after working on Reading 107 FM for a year.

l "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" has been aired in 118 countries around

the world.

l In Britain alone over £65 million has been won in prize money, some of which has gone to charity thanks to the celebrity version.

l There have been over 650 shows in the UK.

l Five million pound UK winners and one cheat.

l Celebrities who have appeared on the show include George Michael, Stephen Fry, Jonathan Ross and Simon Cowell.

Fishing is one of Chris's favourite hobbies as well as playing and watching cricket

"I do prefer radio as you can say the first thing that comes into your head which gives you an edge."

Chris is now planning a charity marathon to take place during the summer. Make sure you see the next copy of Buzz for more information and keep checking online at www.localbuzzmagazine.com for updates.

Charity marathon

In recent years, Chris has received some bad press surrounding his personal life but he says he has overcome this simply by not speaking to them, “There’s a whole rainforest written about my love life but you will not find a single quote from me. “

Although Chris would like to do less work, there are several new celebrity editions of Millionaire planned and he occasionally presents on Radio Two.

In addition, Chris has taken part in a new documentary called “Hero in my Family” where celebrities focus on a family member who has inspired them. In Chris’s case it was his father who fought in the war and earned a military cross.

The documentary shows a reconstruction of what happened to Chris’s father, “The point about it is I grew up incredibly close to my dad and in all the years he

hardly ever mentioned the war. He was my best friend and died sadly five years ago.”

In 2004, Chris received an OBE for his work with charities. He has just finished his role as president of the Lord’s Taverners which raised £6 million in two years for children with learning disabilities, “I’m also patron of several charities including Help for Heroes.”

You can watch Chris Tarrant in “Hero in my Family” on Channel 5. The series starts in April.

17NEXT ISSUE: THE HOLIDAY CHECKLIST

If there is food stuck inside the microwave then bring a mug of water to boil and the steam should loosen the dirt.

Use cotton swabs to clean around tight spots in your sink, shower or bath.

Living roomUse the vacuum attachment to clean between seat cushions, and then use a shampoo treatment or spot treatment on the sofa, testing it on a small unseen part to begin with.

Dust down unplugged electronics and check for worn wires. If you have a carpet you may want to hire a professional or you could just hire the cleaning machine and do it yourself.

Your wardrobeYou should sort out your wardrobe before you clean your bedroom. It will be messy and you’re likely to end up with several piles

of clothes. Arrange your clothes into four piles

which are rubbish, sell/giveaway, storage or put away. Clothes in the 'put away' pile are

worn on a regular basis whereas storage is for clothes worn at specific times of the year.

Get the family involvedGet the whole family involved and it can become a family activity. Pick a day when everyone is available and

get everything needed prior to the day. Reward yourself and your family at the end by going to the cinema or for a meal.

Out with the oldAt the end of all your spring cleaning

you may be left with piles of things you want to get rid of. With car boot sale season just around the corner, put aside what you think is still in good enough condition to be sold.

Have you read all your books? If so, why not exchange them on websites such as www.fatbrain.co.uk or www.bookmooch.com. If you just want to get rid of things or you want to give something back, donate clothes, toys, or other items that are in good condition to charity or local community projects.

springClean

Spring cleaning gives you a great opportunity to rearrange the house and place items in order. Pick a day when you’re free to focus solely on cleaning or if you don’t have time, choose a room a day to focus on.

Start with everyday tasks such as the dishes and emptying the bins. It's important to get everything together beforehand. You’ll need sponges, all purpose sprays, cloths, a mop, a broom, vacuum with attachments, a bucket with a handle, oven cleaner and a duster.

Hardest part firstStart with the hardest rooms first, the kitchen and the bathroom. Clear out your fridge and apply oven cleaner to the oven. Check food to make sure it’s in date and fix any lopsided cupboard shelves. Put the dishwasher on an empty wash and clear out drawers (this is the perfect opportunity to insert some drawer dividers).

Spring is here and it’s time to dust away the cob webs and clear out the clutter.

Most people look upon their spring cleaning with dread but Buzz is here to help you.

Kennel coughKennel cough is an upper respiratory infection, very similar to the common cold and just as simple to catch.

Kennel cough used to be something dogs caught when they went to boarding kennels. Nowadays it can be picked up almost anywhere.

The condition is caused by a variety of airborne viruses and bacteria and nearly every dog will experience it at some point. A typical case of kennel cough will last anywhere from one to three weeks and generally requires little or no medical intervention. As with many conditions, puppies and senior pets have the hardest time fighting off infection. In very extreme cases it can progress into pneumonia.

What are the symptoms?

The cough will sound like retching as if they are trying to get something from the back of their throat. Dogs with kennel cough are usually fine as far as activity levels, appetite, and general attitude.

It’s quite common for infected dogs to cough up clear or cream coloured mucous. Shades of deep gold or green indicates a secondary infection, this is the time to call the vet.

Benylin cough medicine will help ease symptoms. A vaporizing treatment will also help. Sit your dog in a steamy atmosphere for 20 minutes and it will help open the bronchial tubes. Once you know you have an infected dog you must refrain from taking your dog on any walks as kennel cough is highly infectious. Activity can also exacerbate coughing as can wearing a collar.

If you are unsure it is always best to have your dog checked out by the vet.

Flyball is a sport for dogs who just love tennis balls. Whether it’s for competition or for fun it’s an excellent way to exercise your dog and meet with other dog owners. The idea of the sport is for teams of four dog’s racing against each other from a start/finish line.

The course consists of a starting line, four hurdles spaced 10 feet apart and a box. The hurdle height is dependent on the height of the lowest dog in the team. The dogs jump the hurdles and step on a spring-loaded box that releases a tennis ball. The dog catches the tennis ball and then runs back over the four hurdles.

When the dog crosses the starting line the next dog goes, the first team to have all four dogs run without faults wins the heat.

Try flyball and give your dog a great work outHeard of it?

The term ‘banger’ became popular after World War II, when it is said that the scarcity of meat led to added water in the sausage, which expanded against the tight skin on heating, and caused the sausage to explode with a loud bang!

The sandwich was named after English aristocrat, the Earl of Sandwich, who suffered from a gambling addiction. To ensure his game was not interrupted and to keep his hands clean for the cards, he asked for meat to be put between two slices of bread.

Method

Put the yeast and sugar into a bowl. Sieve the flour and salt into the same bowl.

Slowly add enough of the milk and water mix to achieve pliable dough.

Tip out onto a lightly floured surface and knead well for five minutes, then put the dough back into the bowl and leave to rise for one hour.

Incorporate the sultanas, mixed peel (or substituted fruit), orange zest and cinnamon into the dough and leave to rise for one hour.

Lightly grease a baking sheet. Divide the dough into 15-20 pieces and roll each into a ball. Put them

on a baking tray and leave to rest for one hour.

Set the oven to 220°C/gas 8.

The gardening year has really started with all the daffodils and flowering shrubs in full display.

All the vegetable beds should be freshly dug for the first outdoor sowings making sure that this is done in small batches to avoid gluts. It will be time now to harden off some of the transplant vegetables and annual flowers ready for planting in mid May. Do be careful not to try and do this too quickly as you can be caught out by those sudden late frosts.

As the flowering shrubs finish this is the time to prune them and some of the early flowering fruit trees require tying in now.

The herbaceous borders require their late splitting and a final tidy up.

MayThe greenhouse will be full by now and require careful watering and monitoring of low and high temperatures.

Daffodil leaves, if turned yellow, can be removed now.

Nhs reformsThe NHS has gone through several evolutionary developments since its inception in 1948. One major change was introduced by Margaret Thatcher’s government which brought in the purchaser/provider split in an attempt to introduce competition. For the first time all health care activities (for example a hip replacement) had to be priced and then the hospitals (the provider) could charge the purchaser (the health authorities).

The main driver for the new changes as introduced by the Health Secretary Andrew Lansley appears to be a financial one. An ageing population and new medical advances mean that health care inflation is higher than the background rate. To simplify, something needs to be done to control costs but without having an impact on the quality of care.

The Health Care BillThe general aim of the new Health Care Bill is to replace the current purchasers of health care – Primary Care Trusts with GP consortia or clinical commissioning groups who will be in charge of buying health care. These groups will have a mix of members but will be largely led by local GPs who can choose to purchase from a range of public and private providers who are able to offer different prices.

We are all aware that the NHS is being reformed but there is a great deal of misunderstanding about how these changes will affect us. The change is so momentous we have to rely on trusting our politicians and those who are managing these changes.

Dr Richard Rudgley

In effect the NHS will be replaced with a market of competing health service providers. They will be overseen by a new health regulator, just like other areas of our national life such as the water and energy industries.

The government claim that many benefits will arise; management will be reduced and real competition will improve quality and reduce costs even further. They hope decisions will be made locally by GPS who understand what their patients need and there will be closer working with local authorities and public health bodies who can advise on local needs.

CriticismsCritics include the BMA and the GP/midwife and nursing professional bodies, who have all come out against the bill arguing that this is revolution not evolution. They worry that it will cause damaging

disruption, fragmentation of services and will eventually destabilise the health service. They suggest possible scenarios such as hospital closures and alienation of health care staff as their terms and conditions are continually changed which has already happened in the local government sector.

There is great pressure on the government to stop this new health care bill as it is felt that the reforms are going too far and too fast. However,

planning for the new changes is in progress across the country with transitional arrangements and GP commissioning groups already in place in most areas. It seems likely that these changes will take place and will be implemented in April 2013.

33ARE YOU A PARENT? TELL US WHAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO READ ABOUT IN THIS FEATURE - [email protected]

get active this easter! You could also give them a diary and encourage them to write about each day which will also improve their literary skills.

If you haven’t already, enrolling them in a club means they get regular exercise on a weekly basis and holiday clubs can also provide a wide variety of activities for

every child. Children quite often get the chance to decide what they’d like to do giving them freedom and fun. Also keep an

eye out for local events for children.

Start a project

All your children may need is a little motivation to get out of the house and you can give this in the form of a little project. Buy or

lend your children a camera and encourage them to take photos each day. This could focus solely on wildlife which means they go outside for some fresh air every day and learn about their environment.

There are simple ways to increase your child’s daily activity that aren’t time consuming and allow your child to lead a healthier lifestyle whilst having fun.

Get started

As a birthday present give them sports equipment such as a football,

tennis racket or a pair of rollerskates. Even their birthday party can be an activity such as indoor rock

climbing for the older kids and a bouncy castle for the younger ones.

You can also get involved in activities as a family. A monthly trip to the swimming pool will give you and your children some exercise or you could all sign up for a charity walk. Try adding an extra 30 minutes onto their walk to school if you walk with them or if your home is within cycling distance and it is a safe cycling route then encourage your child to start cycling.

If you’re feeling the pinch, cheap or free activities could include cycle rides, a walk in your local forest, picnics or get together with other families in your neighbourhood and play a game of rounders or football.

Change for lifeThe Change4life website is packed with healthy recipes, educational games, tips and activities for you and your whole family to help you alllead a healthier lifestyle. With their motto “Active kids are happy kids” you can find useful tools such as an activity calendar to plan your week and activity cards for great ideas.

www.nhs.co.uk/change4life

Experts say children need at least 60 minutes of exercise everyday to maintain a healthy weight, however video games and TV are keeping children indoors and sat down for long periods of time, which can leave a child demotivated and lethargic.

Many people will remember that she was bright and bubbly, with a beautiful smile and always a friendly word. She was a caring professional who treated everyone with kindness and respect.

When her sister was diagnosed with terminal cancer, Linda used her experience and knowledge to help care for her. Just before her sister died, her nephew was similarly diagnosed and Linda went on to care for him. Then, only months later, after going to the doctor about a little lump, Linda and her husband received the devastating news that she too had inoperable lung cancer.

Founded in 1393 by Sir Richard Abberbury, the Trust manages 50 almshouses and provides pensions to over 20 retired people in need.

The Trust also makes charitable donations to a variety of local charities and organisations throughout Berkshire and Oxfordshire.

Sir Richard Abberbury founded Donnington Hospital by Royal Licence, granted by King Richard II, to provide almshouses for twelve poor men and a Minister. In return the almsmen were required to pray for their benefactor.

Sir Richard endowed the Hospital with the Manor of Iffley in the City of Oxford and it was from

this land that the Trust devolved its income. The Hospital fell into a poor state of repair in the late sixteenth century. The Manor and Castle of Donnington had become the property of the Crown. In 1600 Queen Elizabeth I granted the Manor to Charles, Lord Howard of Effingham, Earl of Nottingham for his part in the defect of the Spanish Armada.

On 25th November 1602 the Queen made a Grant of Refoundation for the Hospital renaming it,

The Donnington Hospital Trust (otherwise known as The Hospital of Queen Elizabeth in Donnington) is the oldest charity in Berkshire.

"The Hospital of Queen Elizabeth in Donnington". In return the Lord of the Manor is required to pay to the Sovereign one red rose annually.A tradition that is maintained to this day.

In 1938 the Trust built 13 almshouses at Abberbury Close in Donnington, Berkshire. In 1960 four flats were built at Iffley in Oxford. Twelve further units were built in Bucklebury, Berkshire between 1970 and 1983. In 1992 a new development of twelve almshouses in Donnington was built to commemorate the Trust's sexcentenary. Her Majesty the Queen and HRH the Duke of Edinburgh opened the new almshouses and visited Donnington Hospital in February 1993.

The work of DHT is self financing and we receive no public funding. The Manor of Iffley together with other property in Oxford and Berkshire provide the income to support the work of the Trust.

The Trust provides almshouses to married couples, single men and women who are of retirement age, of good character and of minimal means. Residents are looked after by wardens although no nursing care is provided.

The Trust is the 23rd oldest recorded charity (out of 185,000 charities) and the 10th oldest almshouse foundation in the country. It remains, however, very much a family charity.
