Local events - instructions for useSince March 2016 the European Committee of the Region has supported its members, regions, cities and their associations to better communicate with citizens on its political agenda, via public local events. These events actively involve CoR

members and other EU institutions in the Member States, such as the Europe Direct Information Centres (EDICs), the Representations of the European Commission (REPs) and the national offices of European Parliament (EPIOs), as partners.

10 Lessons learned to create a local events1. Give priority to the “citizens dialogue” format: we want to facilitate more and

more open debates on the future of Europe between local and European representatives and citizens, mainly young people!

2. Make sure that the message you want to deliver matters to your local audience

3. Create your event in partnership: get in contact with other EU institutions at local level (ie. the nearest EDIC and the national REP & EPIO), they can be your and our partner!

4. Think about synergies: combining local events with external meetings of the European Committee of the Regions (commissions, seminars, study visits, political groups meetings) and/or with relevant national/European events (ie. General assemblies of national/European associations of cities and regions)

5. Early preparation matters: things are complex and should be discussed at an early stage

6. Make best use of social media (twitter, facebook)

7. Create partnership with local and regional media (press, TVs, radio), the CoR can help you!

8. Take care to provide good documentation (photos, video, report)

9. Share your experiences with other cities, regions and CoR members (ie. in the national delegation, political groups, national associations)

10. Local events can have different formats, thematic strands and complexity according with the local priorities, let’s co- create it together!

Be inspired by the French model of local eventsThe European Committee of the Region has been partner in a series of 10 citizens dialogues “Parlons d’Europe en Region” held in France in 2016. All the events were:

• hosted by Europe Direct centres in coordination with the Representation of European Commission in Paris

• supported by the European Committee of the Regions as a partner ( via moderator’s cost and 1 CoR member participating)

• structured in a 2 h debate between 1 CoR member, Members of the European Parliament, local and regional representatives and citizens

• events moderated by a professional journalist

• followed by local and regional press and radio
