From the editorSo September is finally upon us, and we’re heading into another academic year and autumn season. I hope you have been able to take a break over the summer months, travelling abroad or within the UK, or have been out and about at the many events and attractions in and around the Bridgwater area. I hope you’ve been able to visit friends and family, and took advantage of some of the glorious weather we had, enjoying spending some time with the children/grandchildren.

I’ve had a busy summer, and have visited many places in the local area – it’s amazing the number of things there are to do and see on our doorstep – and which don’t cost the earth! There are still many events taking place around Bridgwater during September, so take a read of this month’s magazine to find out more. And don’t forget to send me information of events and fundraising for the October issue, so as we can let people know about them!Best wishesCatherineOctober issue deadline is Thursday 11th September. Health and Fitnessby Hannah Chaudhri

Having been in the health and fitness industry for over two decades, injury is something I often come across with my clients; and like most people who participate in recreational or competition sports and physical activity, I am also no stranger to the occasional strain or sprain.

Injuries are common, however they would be less so if we took a little more time and care of ourselves. There are a few things we can all do to try and prevent exercise related injury:

1. Wear appropriate kit – whether you are going for a walk or doing an Insanity workout, a decent pair of trainers are essential, and can help prevent things like shin splints and ankle injuries.

2. Rest – it can be difficult to take rest days once you have become accustomed to working out; however the body needs time to recover, especially if you are doing intense activity. When we become over-tired our reaction, proprioception and balance are all impaired, presenting a greater risk of tripping or moving awkwardly. If you are unwell or aching from over exertion, the same rules apply.

3. Get advice from a trained specialist – whether you are interested in running a marathon, losing weight or becoming more active, source a well-qualified and experienced specialist to guide you.

4. Eat well. You wouldn’t expect your car to run without any fuel in it, so don’t expect your body to. Food is fuel, and eating a well-balanced healthy diet will not only give you energy, it will feed the vital organs and cells to help your body function well.

If you do get a niggle, don’t ignore it – very often an ice pack, some rest and massage will help a strain or sprain, but ignored or untreated, it will reoccur and in the long term cause a greater injury.

We would be very pleased to see anyone who would like to come and watch the demonstration.

Ageing Well Aims to Keep Fit as a FiddleAge UK Somerset provides chair-based activities in the community, in locations ranging from village halls to retirement accommodation, with active volunteers taking the sessions. From a survey conducted by Age UK Somerset, comments have included, ‘I am more flexible, confident and improved mobility on getting in and out of the bath.’

One person stated that she felt a bit doddery with minimal limb strength and now feels a lot stronger, more toned,

happier and less depressed. We receive so many positive comments from these surveys, we know the service is valued by many.

We are looking for a couple of new volunteers to run classes in and around Bridgwater - could you be that person? Travelling expenses are paid. The chance to be funded on a Level 2 course called Chair Based Exercises for Everyday Living is available for the right candidate. People who volunteer include ex-nurses, teachers or retired House Managers, and no previous experience is necessary. It may well help you to stay a little more active as you age; many people prefer ‘someone just like me’ to take the sessions.

An interest in your community and communication skills are all that are required, so for more information please give me a call today for a chance to join a reputable charity. Dianne Ramsay: 0845 643 4702 or [email protected]. You can also visit our website at www.ageuksomerset.org.uk.

Age UK Somerset promotes the well-being of all older people in Somerset and North Somerset to make later life an enjoyable and fulfilling experience.

Energy Advice Volunteers – Wanted!Do you have time to spare? Do you want to help local people stay warm and well in their own homes, whilst helping the environment? If so, please read on… Warmer Improve Somerset Homes (WISH) is a Big Lottery funded project, managed by the Centre for Sustainable Energy, which is a Bristol-based charity working across the South West. Over the next three years, we will deliver our service in Somerset to identify and support householders who live in cold, damp homes and/or who are struggling to pay their energy bills. The ultimate aim of our project is to help people stay warm and healthy in their homes, lower their fuel bills and reduce their carbon footprint.

What you might be doing: helping to organise and run local events; giving talks to local groups; accompanying advisors on home visits, advising on things like heating controls, condensation, fuel debt etc.

What we provide: We’ll give you training on energy efficiency, including the opportunity to study for a City & Guilds qualification (all expenses reimbursed). You can also join a sociable team of volunteers, with regular team meetings alongside one-to-one support from a member of staff. Interested? We want to hear from you! Somerset Rebels SpeedwaySpeedway riders are the modern-day gladiators of the sporting world, 4 riders per race going head to head on 500cc motorbikes over 4 laps of the shale-based oval track, the bikes accelerating from 0-60mph in just 3 seconds, faster than an F1 racing car, but have no gears and NO BRAKES!

The Somerset Rebels are one of a number of speedway clubs that operate in the UK from Plymouth in the south to Edinburgh in the north, their Oaktree Arena track being situated just off junction 22 on the M5, they race their home matches most Friday nights throughout the speedway season that operates from mid-March until the end of October.

Formed in just 2000, the Somerset Rebels currently operate in the sport’s Premier League, which is the 2nd tier of racing in the UK, their Oaktree Arena track, which is 300 metres in length, is widely acknowledged to be one of the best speedway tracks in the UK, a fact borne out by the fact that Sky Sports are annual visitors to the track icorder to broadcast one of the Rebels home matches, and will, once again, be bringing their cameras to the Oaktree Arena on Tuesday 11th June.

A speedway meeting comprises 15 heats of pulsating action of what must be one of the most extreme spectator sports in the UK, but it is also one that appeals to fans of all ages, from 1-91!

Somerset meetings get underway at 7.30pm, but from when the gates open at 5.30pm until 7pm fans can enter the pits where you can watch the riders prepare their bikes, take photos and also have a chat to the riders – what other sport can you get ‘up close and personal’ with the main people. Kids can also apply to be meeting mascots or hold birthday parties in the Oaktree Clubhouse adjacent to the track. Looking for a team bonding night out or something different to treat your staff then have a look at the Rebels website to see our offers and discounts or just simply email us.

So why not give it a try, we know that you won’t be disappointed………

Positive Pester PowerEco-education: Carymoor helps pupils grasp green issues - By Nick CaterBack to school – three words of joy for parents in Bridgwater, and mixed emotions for their children. One great aspect of today’s schools is that the environment is an important aspect of learning.

Somerset is lucky to have an excellent eco-education resource in the Carymoor Environmental Trust, whose backers include recycling firm Viridor. The charity is based by an old landfill site that is now reverting to grass and trees as a nature reserve atracting birds, animals, reptiles and bugs.

Children, families, schools and other groups can visit Carymoor near Castle Cary or have its enthusiastic and expert young staff visit them. In recent months, Bridgwater’s Haygrove School and Westover Green Primary have both either sent classes to Carymoor or invited them on an outreach visit. Among much else to see and do, Carymoor offers schools great fun activities for assemblies, workshops and project days on all aspects of waste.

Informative and linked to key stages of the curriculum, these sessions cover such topics as why and how to recycle, litter, sustainability and what happens to rubbish. Working with Somerset Waste Partnership, Carymoor is also helping pupils learn about how anaerobic digestion turns food waste into power and farming biofertiliser.

Somerset now has its own AD plant near Bridgwater whose ‘burping bacteria’ help transform the county’s household food waste into electricity. As they learn about these issues, children begin to understand the need to go beyond recycling, to reuse items and materials, and reduce waste. And of course, once your children have understood the cost and pollution of landfilling Somerset’s refuse, your family could soon find itself recycling more. With their help, you might even save some money by wasting less; call it the positive side of pester power!

If you are a parent, teacher or run a group, check out what Carymoor can offer by visiting www.carymoor.org.uk. Or get in touch by emailing [email protected] or calling 01963 351350. Nick Cater is Senior Communications Officer at Somerset Waste Partnership, which manages waste and recycling services on behalf of all local authorities in Somerset: www.somersetwaste.gov.uk.

One World FairThe Mid Somerset Oxfam Group (MSOG) is organising the One World Fair event to take place on Saturday 18th October at the Town Hall, Market Square, Wells between 10am and 4pm. This the first time so many charities in Wells, both local and national, have joined together for such a communal event.

Participating groups will be doing different things - some will have goods to sell – handcrafts, books, Christmas cards and calendars, Fair Trade food and so on. Some will be asking people to sign their campaigning petitions. Other charities will be looking to increase their membership. All of them will be keen to talk about the issues that motivate them, and to answer questions about their work.

The organisations that have already indicated they will be represented include: Amnesty International, CAFOD, Christian Aid, Greenpeace, Traidcraft, Fair Trade and, of course, Oxfam. Although MSOG is the organising group, it is hoped that the collaborative feature of the One World Fair will shine through – each group having its own special focus, its own particular cause, but also a shared vision of a better world.

It is hoped that this will be the first of many future annual events of this nature. Contacts: Trevor Skinner 07739 817136, David Green 01749 673356, Pat Cousins 01749 670517

Researching your Somerset FamilyInspired by TED talks and encouraged by its previous success, the Bridgwater Arts Centre will be offering local people the chance to gain inspiration and knowledge into their own Somerset heritage with ‘Researching your Somerset Family’, by leading historian Graeme Edwards.

Graeme will be giving his talk on Friday 5th September, 7.30pm - bring a notepad and pen to take notes! The talk will last approximately 50 minutes and there will be a question and answer session after the talk. www.bridgwaterartscentre.co.uk.
