Alabamaman pleads guiltyin 5 Birmingham killings

BIRMINGHAM — A man charged ina shooting that left five people dead cutshort his trial a day after it began, plead-ing guilty to murder Wednesday.
Artavius Underwood, 19, of Fairfieldaccepted a deal from prosecutors bypleading guilty to five counts of capitalmurder.
A judge sentenced him to life impris-onment with the possibility of parole,and Underwood could be eligible for re-lease in less than 15 years.
Two more teens await trial on capitalcharges in the shootings.
Police in Birmingham found five menshot to death during an apparent rob-bery in a small frame home on Jan. 29,2012. Victims included Demetrius San-ford, 19; Charles “C.J.” Render, 21; JeffreyDavis Jr. and Jonathan Sanchez, both 23;and Ronnie Render, 42.
Underwood was arrested along withtwo other teens, Reginald Mims and Ra-shad Stoves, who are set for trial in thefall. The plea didn’t include an agree-
ment by Underwood to testify in his co-defendants’ trials, as sometimes occurs.
Relatives of the victims expressed sat-isfaction with the guilty plea by Under-wood, the first of the three to stand trial.
“He got life. I’m happy,” said HanielSanchez, older brother of Jonathan San-chez.
Defense attorney Emory Anthony saidhis client had to consider the plea offersince it meant a possibility of parole.
“We’re just glad it’s over with,” said An-thony.
Prosecutors dropped a robbery chargeand another murder count under theagreement.
Underwood’s trial began Tuesday withopening statements by attorneys andtestimony from witnesses.
Two men who survived the shootingcould not identify Underwood as beingone of the three gunmen, and the judgeruled that jurors could not hear most ofUnderwood’s statements to police be-cause detectives continued questioningthe youth after he asked several times tospeak with his mother.

Dan wasan avid outdoorsman andenjoyed hunting andfishing. He also was amodel airplane enthusiast -building and flying remotecontrol aircraft. Dan had agreat affection for his cats.

9 scholarships awardedfrom $24.8 million raised
MONTGOMERY — Scholarship-grant-ing organizations raised nearly $24.8million in tax-deductible donationsthrough the Alabama AccountabilityAct, but granted only nine scholarshipsin their first semester of operation, areport by the Alabama Revenue Depart-ment shows.
The organizations began raisingmoney last summer to help low-incomestudents and those in failing publicschools attend private school. Their firstreports to the Revenue Department ranthrough the end of 2013, which coveredthe first semester of the new program.The report said six of the nine studentshad attended public schools during theprevious school year.
