Upper wing skins $14 millionAnd $110million in May2011
The contract is to produce compositecomponents for low rate initial production (LRIP)Lots 5 through 9 of the F-35 Lightning II - JointStrike Fighter. The contract includes productionof multiple components through the LRIP 9phase of the program. Under the terms of thecontract, ATK will use advanced hand lay-upprocessing techniques to manufacture upperfixed aft skins for both the carrier variant (CV)and short-take off/vertical landing (STOVL)variant, upper access covers on the CV andconventional take-off and landing (CTOL)variant, and the upper access center covers forthe STOVL variant. Production will take place atATK's Clearfield, Utah facility beginning in 2011

continuing through 2015. In addition to thiscontract award, ATK manufactures several othercomposite structures for the F-35, including theseven-piece upper wing skin, lower wing skins, engine nacelle skins, inlet ducts, and the upperwing strap using both automated fiberplacement and hand lay-up techniques. InSeptember 2011 Lockheed Martin AeronauticsCompany awarded ATK the contract to producesingle-segment, all-composite upper wing skins.Under the initial system development anddemonstration contract is supplying parts for 22ship sets through October 2006. Follow-onpotential during the low-rate initial productionphase includes an additional 674 ship setsthrough 2015. ATK Composites is responsible fortooling design and manufacture of the upperwing skins for all three variants of the newfighter aircraft, with products based on the fibreplacement manufacturing process. ATKComposites previously supported LockheedMartin on two JSF demonstration programs - forthe Concept Demonstration Aircraft, ATKsupplied two ship sets of fibre-placed inlet ductsand representative sections of the upper wingskins to simulate the STOVL and CV variants.

F136 engines(SDD phase)
$2.4 billion The F136 Development and Demonstration(SDD) program was formally launched in August2005 with a $2.4 billion contract award. The SDDphase is scheduled to run through 2013; the firstproduction F136 engines are scheduled to bedelivered in late 2012 for the F-35 Lightning IIaircraft. This occurs during the fourth lot of F-35aircraft production, which is very early in theoverall aircraft production program.GE -Aviation, with responsibility for 60 per cent ofthe F136 program, is developing the corecompressor and coupled high-pressure/low-pressure turbine system components, controlsand accessories, and the augmentor. Rolls-Royce, with 40 per cent of the F136 program, isresponsible for the front fan, combustor, stages2 and 3 of the low-pressure turbine, andgearboxes. International participant countriesare also contributing to the F136 throughinvolvement in engine development andcomponent manufacturing. However, followinga US Congress decision in March 2011 to cancelthe F-136 engine program General Electric andRolls-Royce have said they will spend their ownmoney to keep the F136 engine alive.

Flaperons The F-35's flaperons are 3 metre long flaps onthe wing trailing edges which are vital for thecontrollability of the aircraft. The units designare based on a combination of composite andtitanium with a better resistance to fatigue andcorrosion. Stork Fokker has alreadymanufactured more than 2000 sets of flaperonsfor the Lockheed Martin F-16 aircraft type formany years. This initial order will provideemployment for around 100 people, a figurethat will be doubled if the total production orderis received. Production will be in theNetherlands, initially in the existing Stork Fokkerfactory in Hoogeveen, and will later betransferred to a new F-35 factory.Other contributions by Stork Aerospace to theJSF project include the design and production ofthe doors and hatches, the electrical wiring
