The Month That Was… May has been another big month with several special activities for residents to take part in. A number of residents enjoyed a visit to the Brisbane Museum (housed in the Brisbane City Hall) to enjoy a wonderful display of ‘Costumes from the Golden Age of Hollywood’.

The costumes and accompanying film tracks brought back many magical memories, and it was exciting to see the original costumes worn by stars such as Elizabeth Taylor, Deborah Kerr, Esther Williams, Cary Grant, Marlon Brando and many others. Having lunch at the Shingle Inn on the ground floor of City Hall also brought back many happy memories for some residents. The group arrived back at Lodges very tired, but very happy. Special thanks to the extra volunteers who came along on the day to help. You are much appreciated!

The Sunnysiders once again gave us a lively and happy morning of music and song on 13th May. The harmonica adds variety to their presentation, and Fred always has plenty of jokes to share.

Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea came to Lodges on Thursday 28th May. We enjoyed a scrumptious morning tea supplied by our kitchen, and Jan and Alex entertained with their well-loved music. We had lots of fantastic raffle prizes to draw. The winners of the major prizes were – Nina Breeding (Kitchen), Connie Ziesel (Edith Schober’s daughter) and Kerry (one of Leigh Ann from the Laundry’s friends). A special thanks to Louise Tout and daughter Jan for supplying lots of smaller prizes for the raffle too. There were lots of winners on the day, and we were able to raise $840 ($700 from raffle tickets and $140 from donations) for the Cancer Council, as well as have a great social morning together. We look forward to seeing you at our many activities during June.

Until next month –

Lyn, June and Tiffany.

Fun Facts About June

The month of June comes from the Roman, or Julian, calendar. June was initially

named Iunius. The name either comes from the Roman goddess Juno, wife of Jupiter,

or from the word "iuniores", the Latin word for "younger ones". In the early Roman

calendar June only had 29 days. It was Julius Caesar who added the additional day

giving June 30 days.

June is known as a great month to get married.

Cancer Awareness

Cancer. A common a word within Australians’ conversations regarding health. There are a

number of chemical, physical and biological agents that have been shown to trigger mutant

cells (those with mistakes in their genetic blueprint) that grow and divide, a mass of abnormal

cells or a tumour that can cause cancer.

The recent Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea is a major fundraiser for

the Cancer Council of Australia. Along with other major fundraisers

such as Daffodil Day, Pink Ribbon campaign, Relay for Life and

recent additions The Emeralds & Ivy Ball and The March Charge,

the Cancer Council of Australia has raised significant funds for

cancer research.

Cancer Councils are the leading independent funders of cancer research in Australia. In 2014,

research grants through Cancer Councils totalled more than $65 million. Fortunately the

survival rate for many common cancers has increased by 30

percent in the last 20 years. However, it is estimated that 128,000

new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in Australia this year with

that number set to rise an additional 22,000 cases by the year

2020.

The most commonly diagnosed cancers (excluding non–melanoma skin cancer) are prostate,

bowel, melanoma, and lung cancers. With the current knowledge surrounding cancer

prevention, the Cancer Council believes that at least one in three cancer cases can be

prevented, if risk factors are addressed or limited.

According to the Cancer council there are simple steps to reduce cancer risk; Quit Smoking, eat

a healthy diet, maintain a healthy weight, participate in some form of regular physical activity,

limit alcohol, be sunsmart, and have regular screenings with your GP.

Laughter is Good for your Health

Laughter relaxes the whole body. A good, hearty laugh relieves physical tension and stress, leaving your muscles relaxed for up to 45 minutes after.

Laughter boosts the immune system, decreases stress hormones, increases immune cells and infection-fighting antibodies, in turn improving your resistance to disease. Laughter triggers the release of endorphins, the body’s natural feel-good chemicals. Endorphins promote an overall sense of well-being and can even temporarily relieve pain.

Laughter protects the heart, by improving the function of blood vessels and increasing blood flow, which can help protect you against a heart attack and other cardiovascular problems. Incorporating more humour and play into your daily interactions can improve the quality of your relationships— as well as your connections with co-workers, family members, and friends. Here are some ways to start:

Smile. Smiling is the beginning of laughter. When you look at someone or see something even mildly pleasing, practise smiling.

Count your blessings. The simple act of considering the good things in your life

will distance you from negative thoughts that are a barrier to humour and laughter.

When you hear laughter, move toward it. More often, people are very happy to

share something funny because it gives them an opportunity to laugh again and feed off the humour you find in it.

Spend time with fun, playful people. These are

people who laugh easily–both at themselves and at life’s absurdities–and who routinely find the humour in everyday events.

Bring humour into conversations. Ask people, “What’s the funniest thing that

happened to you today? This week? In your life?”
