I came across an article published online and in the February 2019 issue of Pediatrics entitled, " The Link Between School Attendance and Good Health" They stated research that backs up suspicions that I have had over the years. “Chronic absenteeism can occur as early as preschool and kindergarten and has been shown to be related to future chronic absenteeism, grade retention, and poor academic achieve- ment, particularly for social skills and reading. 3,8,20,21 Students with poor at- tendance score lower than their peers who attend school regularly on national skills assessments, regardless of race or ethnicity. 3 Chronic absenteeism can be a better predictor of school failure than test scores. In 1 study, students with high test scores who missed at least 2 weeks of school during the se- mester were more likely to have failing grades than students with low test scores who regularly attended school. 23 Chronic absenteeism as early as sixth grade is predictive of dropping out of school. 3 ” You can click on the numbers to be connected to the research. Arriving late to school also causes a disruption to the classroom and causes added stress to a child, who has walked into a classroom where directions may have already been given and instruction already started. Parent Advisory Group Meeting (PAC) Have you ever wanted to give feedback to school but didn’t know how to do it or wondered if it would be heard? As a school we also wanted to get feedback from families that represent the grades, ages, and family makeup of our schools. Join us at the next PAC meeting Monday, Feb 4, 2019, from 6-7 at Lodi Elementary Library. Together we will discuss and make plans with families on how to create feedback loops in varying forms. This could be an email group where we email seeking a parent perspective, a group where we request a meeting and you attend, if you can. This group will give feedback on procedures, policies, and general operations of our school with the goal to make it even better. One of the first tasks will be feedback on the 4K-5 report cards. Please come with your ideas because this concept started with a suggestion from a family.

The importance of family meals:

Our lives are so full of many activities that often times our mealtimes revolve around this

busy lifestyle. As a result, some of the food choices we make are not the healthiest for our bod-

ies. Experts know that kids who eat regular meals with their families are more likely to eat

fruits, vegetables and whole grains. It is important to make family meals a priority.

Start simple:

1. Pick a time when everyone can enjoy a meal together, it maybe breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Make it fun like a pizza picnic, taco night, or candlelite breakfast.

2. Pick a blend of foods you know your kids like, along with a new food to try.

Have the kids come to the grocery store to help pick out some fruits or veggies to try.

3. Get the family involved in preparing the food, setting the table, or cleaning up.

4. During meal time turn off the TV and electronic devices.

5. Practice good manners and dinner conversation.

Examples of questions to get your dinner conversation started:

Did anything funny happen today?

Who did you sit by at lunch?

Was there anything that was difficult or hard to do today?

Would you rather go to your school or to Hogwarts? Why?

6. Limit the number of unhealthy food choices between meals.

Provide easy to grab snacks:

Snack size bags of carrots

Cheese sticks

Small refillable bottles of water

Snack size bags of sliced apples (soaking in ½ teaspoon of salt to 1 cup of water

for 5-10 mins before bagging helps prevent the apples from browning).

7. Show your kiddos healthy food habits by setting a good example.

We do not like to admit it, but all those little people are watching and copying our be-

haviors.
