OperationManual Winch1

SECTION 1 OPERATION

IMPORTANT! This manual is provided as a supplement tothe equipment manufacturer’s manuals. This manual takesinto account the specific use of the winch on theWood-Mizer sawmill. Only safety, maintenance, and operat-ing procedures that are not provided by the manufacturerare supplied in this manual. Refer to the manufacturer'smanual before attempting to operate this equipment.

The manual winch may be used on LT251, LT30 and LT40 sawmills to load logs onto thebed. The winch may also be used with the optional log turner to rotate large diameter logson the sawmill bed.

DANGER! Keep all persons out of the path of movingequipment and logs when operating sawmill or loading andturning logs. Failure to do so will result in serious injury.

1.1 Manual Winch

Inspect the winch mechanism and cable for proper operation before each use. Check thecable for damage and replace if necessary. Refer to the manufacturer’s manual for lubri-cation instructions.

The winch supplied is rated to handle 3500 pounds (1588 kg).

The winch features two-speed operation and a brake. To select the winch speed youwant, place the crank handle on the correct winding shaft. The top winding shaft providesa slow, but stronger, winding action. Use this top winding shaft when handling larger logs. The lower winding shaft will provide a faster winding action. Use when handling small tomedium size logs.

To install the crank handle to either shaft, press in the spring-loaded locking mechanismon the handle. Slide the handle onto the shaft and release the lock. To remove the crankhandle, press in the lock and slide the handle off the shaft.

1 Use the supplied 6" bolts to replace the winch bracket mounting bolts. Longer bolts allow mount-ing of winch bracket and feed rope bracket.

1-1 LDPdoc102219 Operation

OperationManual Winch 1

To operate the brake, make sure the brake strap is positioned over the brake cam. Pushthe brake handle against the brake strap. Release when the winch stops turning.

WARNING! Maintain a firm grip on the winch handle at alltimes, and never release handle when ratchet lever is inunlocked position with a load on the winch. Otherwise, han-dle will spin violently, which could cause personal injury.

See Figure 1-1. To operate the winch, use the winch handle. Turn the handle counter-clockwise to tighten the cable. To loosen the cable, raise the winch direction pin, turn it90° and release it. (The pin rest arms should keep it in the raised position.) Now move thewinch handle clockwise to loosen the cable. When finished, turn the pin 90° and release.(The pin should return to its original position.)

1.2 Manual Log Turner

The log turner assembly is designed to be used in conjunction with the manual winch torotate logs on the mill bed.

1. Loop the winch cable around the turner elbow pulley as shown.

See Figure 1-2.

2. Route the cable around the first anchor pulley as shown.

See Figure 1-3.

FIG. 1-2

FIG. 1-3

1-3 LDPdoc102219 Operation

OperationManual Log Turner 1

3. Route the end of the cable around the remaining anchor pulley and attach cable hook to'U' bracket provided.

See Figure 1-4.

4. Make sure the side supports are in a vertical position so the log doesn't fall off the backside of the sawmill. Reel in winch cable until the log turner contacts the log and begins tolift it. Continue tightening the winch cable to rotate the log 90 degrees degrees, 180degrees, or as desired. If the log is resting on a round side, use the clamping dog toclamp in place against the side supports before disengaging the turner.

5. Once the log is turned and resting solid, release the winch cable to let the turner dropbelow bed level. Adjust side supports to clear blade, if necessary.

DANGER! Keep all persons out of the path of movingequipment and logs when operating sawmill or loading andturning logs. Failure to do so will result in serious injury.

6. If the log turner teeth are gripping the logs too high or too low, adjust the log turner stop.

7. The log turner stop rod has three holes. A safety clip is placed in one of the holes to stopthe rod from going completely into the log turner tube when the turner is raised. Whichhole the clip is in determines how far the rod will go into the tube. To adjust the stop, sim-ply remove the safety clip from its current position and place in another hole.

Operation LDPdoc102219 1-4

OperationManual Toe Board1

1.3 Manual Toe Board

In many cutting operations, particularly cutting for grade, it is desirable to cut tapered logsparallel to the heart of the log. The optional toe boards allow the operator to lift either endof a log to parallel the heart to the path of the blade.

1. When a log is loaded and ready for the first cut, measure from the bed rail or auxiliarysupport to the heart of the log.

See Figure 1-5.

2. Measure at the other end of the log and compare distances. The distance from the bed tothe heart on one end of the log should be within 1/2" (12.5 mm) of the measurement fromthe bed to the heart on the other end of the log.

3. If adjustment is necessary, place the crank handle on the toe board at the end of log to beraised. Turn the handle clockwise to raise the end of the log. Raise about half the differ-ence measured as the other end of the log will typically lower as the end being raisedgoes up. Remeasure both ends of the log from the bed rails and adjust toe board as nec-essary until both ends measure the same distance from the bed rails.

FIG. 1-5

1-5 LDPdoc102219 Operation

OperationManual Toe Board 1

See Figure 1-6.

4. Remove the toe board crank handle. Clamp the log against the side supports and makethe desired number of cuts. When the log is rotated 180 degrees, lower the toe board sothat the flat portion of the log now lies flat on the bed rails. This will result in the two oppo-site sides of the log cut parallel to the heart.

CAUTION! Be sure the pivot rails, turning arm, clamp, andtoe boards are below bed level before loading a log ontothe bed. Failure to do so may result in machine damage orcause misalignment.

5. Repeat these steps to square the remaining two sides of the log. If you do not have thetoe board option, you can achieve the same results by shimming one end of the log sothat the blade cuts parallel to the log's heart.
