Batman Logo

Layer Styles, Color, Levels, and Filters

Step 1

a. Copy "batman logo.psd" from the Tutorials folder in the Outbox.b. Save it into your home folder, and rename it yourname_batman_logo.psd.c. Open the file in Photoshop.

Step 2

a. Make sure the "batman logo" layer is selected in the Layers palette. b. Click on the Add a Layer Style icon at the bottom of the layers panel and choose Bevel and

Emboss. c. Enter 100% for Depth, uncheck Use Global Light, enter 10° for Angle, and 55° for Altitude. d. Click on the Gloss Contour down-facing arrow and choose Cone -Inverted (top row, third icon from

left).e. Raise the Highlight Mode Opacity to 100%, and click OK.f. Save the file (Ctrl-S).

This will put a strong highlight on the right side of the logo.

Step 3

a. Duplicate "batman logo" ("batman logo copy") by dragging it onto the Create a New Layer icon at the bottom of the layers panel.

b. Lower the layer Opacity to 50% and the Fill to 0%. c. Double-click on the words Bevel and Emboss to open the Layer Style dialog. d. Change the Angle to -149°, the Altitude to 58°, lower the Shadow Mode Opacity to 0%, and click

OK. e. Save the file.

This will put a thin highlight on the left side of the logo.

Step 4

a. Duplicate "batman logo copy" ("batman logo copy 2").b. Double-click on the words Bevel and Emboss to open the Layer Style dialog. c. This time, change the Angle to -56°, the Altitude to 69°, and click OK. d. Save the file.

This will put a thin highlight on the lower right side of the logo.

Step 5

a. Shift-click on all three layer copies to select them, and press Ctrl-E to merge the three layers into one.

b. Press Ctrl-L to bring up the Levels dialog. c. Drag the Midtone adjustment slider (circled) to the left to brighten the midtone highlights, then

click OK.

d. Save the file.

Step 6

a. Click on the Add a Layer Style icon and choose Stroke. b. Enter 1 for Size, lower the Opacity to50%, and click on the red Color swatch.

c. Choose a dark-blue color (R:55, G:87, B:108) and click OK.

d. Click OK to apply the layer style. e. Save the file.

Step 7

a. Create a new layer (Layer 1).b. Go under Edit and choose Fill...c. Change Use: to 50% Gray and click OK.

d. Go under Filter, under Noise, and choose Add Noise.e. Enter 10% and click OK.

f. Now, go under Filter, under Blur, and choose Motion Blur. Enter 20° for Angle, 100 for Distance, and click OK.

g. Save the file.

Step 8

a. With Layer 1 still selected, Ctrl-click on the "batman logo copy 2" thumbnail to load it as a selection.

b. Go under Select, under Modify, and choose Contract.c. Enter 5 pixels and click OK.

d. Now click on the Add Layer Mask icon (the gray square with the white circle in it) at the bottom of the Layers panel.

e. Save the file.

Step 9

a. Click on the Add a Layer Style icon and choose Stroke.b. Change the Size to 1, lower the Opacity to 50%, and click on the red Color swatch. c. Choose white as the color and click OK.

d. Now click on the words Gradient Overlay.

e. Change the Blend Mode to Overlay, click on the Reverse checkbox, and then click on the Gradient thumbnail.

f. When the Gradient Editor dialog appears, click on the white color stop on the right, then click on the white Color swatch at the bottom left.

g. Choose a blue color (R:70, G:111, 6:153) and click OK. h. Click OK once again to close the Gradient Editor. i. Change the Angle to 67°. j. Click OK to apply the layer style.k. Save the file.

Step 10

a. With the Layer 1 thumbnail selected (not the mask), choose the Dodge tool from the Toolbox. b. Up in the Options Bar, set Range to Highlights, and with a soft-edged brush, paint in some

highlights on the left side of the logo.

c. Now choose the Burn tool, set Range to Shadows, and paint in some shadows.

d. Press Ctrl-E to merge down the layers. e. Save the file.

Step 11

a. Turn on the "sky" layer. b. Double-click on the word Stroke (under "batman logo copy 2"). c. When the Layer Style dialog appears, click on Outer Glow. d. Lower the Opacity to 30% and click on the pate-yellow color swatch. e. Choose white as the color and click OK.f. Now change the Size to 16 pixels and click OK to apply the style. g. Save the file.

Step 12

a. Choose the Text tool.b. Up in the Options bar, choose Arial 12 pt. Set it to center alignment, and click on the color swatch.

c. Choose a light blue for the text color (R:134, G:186, B:219).d. Open up the Charatcer palette. Set the Tracking to 300 (see the circled items below).

e. Click about halfway from the tip of the tail to the bottom of the image. Type in some text in all capital letters. Click on the green check mark in the options bar to save your text.

f. Change the text layer's Opacity to 75%. g. Click on the Add a Layer Style icon at the bottom of the layers panel and choose Stroke.h. Set the stroke to 1 pixel and change the color to black.

i. Now click on the words Outer Glow. Change the Opacity to 50%, the color to white, and the Size to 5 pixels.

j. Save the file, print a copy for your portfolio and turn it in to the Drop Box.
