Logical In-Vial Dilution with Ultrafiltration for Anion
Analysis
IC Application Work AW US6-0149-012011
Presented by Carlos Bazán
2
Overview
• Dosino technology provides a highly efficient and accurate method for performing dilutions in-line; saving customers time, money, and reducing human error
• Previous configurations required external mixing with added components and added $$
• The In-Vial Dilution configuration can perform dilutions in an empty sample vial and utilizes the Dosino to mix the diluted sample
• Intelligent re-dilution of samples above the calibration range is possible
• Next-Vial Dilution allows the next sample in the series to be diluted while the current sample is still running, maintaining high sample through-put
3
Components needed• 881, 882, or 850 IC
• 858 Sample Processor with peristaltic pump (2.858.0020)
• 800 Dosino with 10 mL Dosing Unit
• IC Equipment for Ultrafiltration (6.5330.010)
• T-Connector 3 X UNF 10-32 (6.2744.290; diverts flow for dilution or filtration)
• In-line check valve (6.2744.190; prevents Dosino from pulling from ultrafiltration cell waste)
• 10 mL Transfer Capillary (6.1562.130)
• Wash station for IC (6.2841.100)
4
Basic function• Sample is aspirated into the transfer capillary by the Dosino. The in-
line check valve prevents UF cell waste from being aspirated.
5
Basic function• The aspirated sample and a quantity of UHP H2O to complete the
dilution are dispensed into an empty sample vial.
6
Basic function• The diluted sample is aspirated and dosed several times to mix it
completely.
7
Basic function• The peristaltic pump moves the diluted sample through the
ultrafiltration cell and to the IC.

MagIC Net Sample Table
Injections= 1 for normal analysis, 2 when an intelligent re-dilution check should be performed
Dilution= the Manual Dilution Factor for hand-dilutions made
Value 1= the Dosino Dilution Factor; the dilution the instrument will perform
Value 2= the Dilution Vial; vial position the dilution is performed in
Value 3= the Intelligent Dilution Vial; vial position for intelligent re-dilution when needed
9
Features: Calibration• Calibration from one stock standard; levels made by variable
dilution• Makes standard prep easier, saves time, reduces human error
Dilution Factor (Value 1)
200 100 50 20 10
10
Features: Next-Vial Dilution• Prepares the dilution of the next sample in the series while the
previous sample is still running• Reduces the overall dilution time needed for a sample series;
very valuable for labs needing high through-put• Can be used with intelligent re-dilution; during the re-dilution run
the next sample is prepared• Uses the SD.NEXT values in the program to access the POSITION,
VALUE1 and VALUE2 of the next line in the sample table
11
Features: Multi-component Intelligent Re-dilution• Software can evaluate which out of the entire list of
component ions is most above the calibration range • Re-dilutes samples accordingly
If this is not an intelligent dilution run (Injection=1),or the Area of Fluoride =0,then Autodilution Factor for Fluoride=0.
If it is an intelligent dilution run (Injection=2) then Autodilution Factor for Fluoride = (Concentration of Fluoride in current run / (Concentration of Fluoride in the highest standard X the Manual Dilution Factor )) X the Dosino Dilution Factor
12
Features: Multi-component Intelligent Re-dilution
13
Performance: Calibration Linearity
• Low calibration RSD
• Linear across a broad calibration range
14
Performance: Dilution Accuracy
• 99%+ Accuracy compared to a 1:10 hand-dilution• 96%+ Accuracy compared to a 1:100 hand-dilution
(1:100 is maximum advisable Dosino-prepared dilution with 10 mL Dosing Unit)
15
Performance: Reproducibility
• Approximately 1.5% RSD on 6 replicate injections of 1:100 dilution (with lower RSD at lesser dilution factors).
16
Performance: Intelligent Re-dilution• System can re-dilute samples based on which ion is most above the
calibration range; can compare all analytes in component table

Market Potential
• A large percentage of environmental and QC laboratories must routinely perform sample dilutions
• User proficiency is going down, so reliable in-line, automated methods for dilution and standard preparation are highly valuable
• Automatic re-dilution of samples above the calibration range saves time, especially on samples with 48 hr. hold-time
• LOW COST OF THE SYSTEM MEANS WE SHOULD SELL A LOT OF THESE TO A LOT OF USERS!
