India as " the post office" .Postal services are the means of getting connected
with people all over world. In India, there is a seperate governmentdepartment looking after the management, operations and functions of postal
requirements in the country. There are various post office in all most every
region of India where people personally contact the concerned authority for
their need of postal service. Today, with the arrival of private companies in
this sector, the queries of Indian postal requirements are handled by them.
Few famous private companies working under the line of postal services for
corporate associates, business houses as well as individuals are DHL, Blue
Dart, Blazeflash & other famous firms. Postal services are not only limited
to sending letters. It has crossed its functional activities like courier services,
parcel delivery, sending money orders, parcel courier services, speed post,
air courier, registered post, postcard, stamps, fedex and other postal services.
HISTORYThe Indian postal system developed into an extensive, dependable
and robust network providing connectivity to almost all parts of
India, Burma, the Straits Settlements and other areas controlled by
the British East India Company. Based on the model postal systemintroduced in England by the reformer, Rowland Hill, postal
services were provided at a low cost and enabled the smooth
functioning of the administrative machinery of the British Raj. The
Imperial Posts co-existed with the several postal systems
maintained by various Indian states, some of which produced
stamps for use within their respective dominions, while British
Indian postage stamps were required for sending mail beyond the
boundaries of these states. Telegraphy and telephony made theirappearance as part of the Posts before becoming separate
departments. After the Independence of India in 1947, the Indian
postal service continues to function on a countrywide basis and
provides many valuable, low cost services to the public of India.
The worlds first stamps were called the Penny Blacks. They were

issued in Great Britain by Sir Rowland Hill in 1840. The Scinde
Dawk stamps were issued just 14 years after the first postage
stamps were introduced in the world! So, they date back to a time
when the postal system was still in its infancy. This first postal
stamp the Penny Black featured a portrait of Queen Victoria . Itgot its name from the fact that it cost one penny and was printed in
black ink. The first association of stamp collectors was founded in
1856 in the United States . It was called the Omnibus club. Its
members, however, were encouraged to collect not only stamps
but also a wide variety of objects including bugs!
One hundred and fifty years after the postal services came to the
Asian continent, the India postal system with 1,55,618 post offices
and over 5,66,000 employees working in unison, is considered thelargest postal network in the world. Indias postal system was
initially based on the model that the British left behind. But, the
British model was designed essentially to transmit administrative
orders. The Indian system broadened the vision of the postal
system to reach the entire population of the country.

HLL should take over Indian Postal Service
HLL is the Indian Giant. It is one company that can make anything
profitable, then why not Indian Postal Service. Some reasons why
this might be beneficial for both sides.
HLL can enter the retail revolution in a big big way. Indian Postal
Service has over 154,000 offices all across the country. Most of
them don't utilize the space efficiently. HLL can put retail plans
into them very very efficiently.
HLL is one of the biggest advertizers in the country. It spends over
1000 crores in advertising. It can advertize in all these offices,
moreover it can provide envelopes, customized stamps, and many
other forms of advertising.
Supply chain management benefits for HLL.
Indian Postal Service is almost dead. The courier service has
virtually killed it, maybe with its dynamic nature HLL can provide
the insight which Indian Postal Service needs.
HLL can modernize Indian Postal Service in a big way. Althoughattempts have been made to do so earlier by IPS itself but they
have not been really succesful.
The money deposited in post accounts can be invested by HLL in
its businesses and give better returns.
The only reason why HLL would probably not want to take this up
is because of the inefficiency of a government setup present in the
Indian Postal Service. The 593,878 employees of Indian Postal
Service seem more of a burden rather than an asset, and the land, the location, the positioning are the only things which add value.
Still the Indian Postal Service seems to be the most underutilized
portion of the government with the maximum.

Total recognition of the responsibilities as a part of the social,
industrial and commercial life of the countryTotal enthusiasm to be forward looking and innovative in all
areas.
conclusionIn conclusion, it can be said that the ability of India Post to
compete in the rural segment will depend on the extent with which
such new initiatives are pursued with more intensive use of
infrastructure. The decline of the conventional letter mail is aknown phenomena. This trend is not confined to India Post alone,
but other similarly placed countries also face similar challenges.
However, innovative restructuring, right sizing along with new
initiatives may reduce the extent of financial loss and that is the
bottom line all of us have to aim at.
