Covid-19 Stone Snake Trail reaches 724 painted rocks!Sunday 14th of June 2020Today, my family and I walked to Dockray Hall end of the riverside walk where the Kendal rock snake is located. We had painted several rocks the day before that we planned to add to the end of the snake. We placed our rocks, looked at all the other beautiful - hand-painted – stones added by families, individuals and schools, then made our way back home along the river spotting several ducklings as we did so.

If you have not already, go and add your rocks (or if you have, you can always do more).

Help spread hope with positive, colourful rocks!

Using 5 different colour fluid acrylic paints, I began by squeezing them onto a canvas and then started to twirl it round, dripping it down to one corner and then te next until it made up this marbled effect. Then you can layer up the paints, for example I could put black over peach. After putting on the desired amount of paint I left it to dry, then put it on my wall.

My JackI had a doggy friend named Jack,

That little fluffball was jet black,Us two always loved to play,

Through the night and through the day,I very much liked all his toys,

Even those that made a noise,I loved Jack so much, he was my friend,

I loved him till the very end,Unfortunately, he passed away,Leaving me feeling like a stray,

He always had a waggy tail,I loved that little Patterdale.

The interview: writing for Horrible HistoriesRobyn This week we will be interveiwing Claire Wetton, a comedy writer and script editor

What is your job?

I am a freelance comedy writer and script editor. This means I work on lots of different TV and Radio shows, such as Class Dismissed, Dennis and Gnasher Unleashed, Bad Nature, Scream Street, Crackerjack, Horrible Histories, and many more.

As a comedy writer, I write the scripts you see on TV or hear on the radio. This means I come up with lots and lots of silly ideas, and hope the producers like them enough to want them in their show. If they do, I get paid to write them into a script.

Do you ever see the filming?

TV shows take a very long time to make, the writing part happens months before the cameras start rolling. I’ve recently finished writing scripts that won’t make it to your TV screens until 2022! By the time filming happens, I’m usually working on a new TV show somewhere else. Radio shows are much quicker, so writers do usually get to see them recorded.

However, I was lucky enough to go and watch some sketches being recorded for Horrible Histories series 8, and was even allowed to be in one! I got to say 5 words, but two of them were edited out. Doesn’t say much for my acting career!

It was really exciting to go and see all the sets, and watch the actors make the scripts come to life. And I loved looking at all the costumes. All of the actors on Horrible Histories are really nice and fun to hang out with. Some of them even help to us write the show!

How do you come up with the material?

Each Horrible Histories episode is based on a theme, such as Fashion, or Food and Drink. We have a team of very clever (and funny) historians, who research all the fun and gross facts about that subject from throughout the ages. Then the writing team all head to London for the day, and like being at school, they teach us all the facts about the subject. Unlike school, they give us LOTS OF SNACKS, to keep us quiet. Although it rarely works, and we usually ask far too many questions and make far too many naughty jokes and get told off (although they never give us detention).

Then all of the writers go home and think of as many funny ideas about what they have learnt as they can. We each send those into the producers, who choose their favourite ideas to be written into sketches for the show.

On other shows, I sometimes use ideas from my own life to use as storylines for the characters.

What is your favourite time period?

I’ve always loved the Tudors. Anne Boleyn and Henry VIII are my favourite historical characters. Although the 1920’s is very fun to write about as so much happened. We’ve just written a whole episode about the 1920’s for series 9, and I can’t wait to see it!

What is your favourite fact?

So many! But here are 2.

-James I wanted to ban all women from London, as he thought they should be at home looking after their children, instead of watching the theatre and going shopping.-Blackbeard the pirate wasn’t quite as bad as his reputation makes out. Instead of killing sailors to steal their treasure, he actually just used to put fireworks in his beard, and act really really scary. The sailors would be so terrified, they’d run away and he could just take their treasure without a fight! (Although if they didn’t run away he would fight them if he absolutely had to. He wasn’t all good).

-Queen Elizabeth I used to do 6 dance rou-tines in her bedroom every morning before breakfast to keep herself fit. Even when she was really old!
