TRIO Programs
The term "TRiO" was coined to describe the first of these federal
programs to be established.

TRIO Programs
The Higher Education Amendments added the fourth program
Designed to assist and motivate Veterans, a fifth program added
Amendments in 1986 added the sixth program.
The department created a seventh program to address the need for
specific instruction in the field of math & science.

TRIO Pre-College Programs
First established on this campus in 1982, TRiO Pre-College
Programs such as Upward Bound, Talent Search, Veterans
Upward Bound and Upward Bound Math & Science have
contributed to the University's efforts in serving and
maintaining its connection to the local community and its
students.
While student financial aid programs help students to overcome financial
barriers to access higher education, the TRiO programs help students overcome
class, social and cultural barriers.

The Program in a ‘Nut Shell’
Mission:…to inspire, prepare and support students for admission into post secondary education / careers in the fields of mathematics, science, and/or engineering (MSE).
Goals / Objectives: Upward Bound Math & Science (UBMS) is
specifically designed to strengthen math, science, and technological skills of each participant and prepare them academically to pursue post-secondary degrees in MSE fields.
What we do: UBMS is an ACADEMIC college preparatory
program for high school students funded by the U.S. Department of Education and sponsored by the University of Texas at Arlington. More in the student handbook.

The TRiO Bridge program is the pinnacle opportunity for our upcoming high school graduates to get the first taste of college thru taking college classes and spending one last semester with us at UT Arlington.
Quick Tid-Bits The entire TRiO Bridge class will consist of participants from:

TRiO Bridge will be staying in one of the residence halls on campus. It is still being determined by UTA Summer Housing.
TRiO Bridge will begin with participants arriving on Monday, July 11, 2016.

BRIDGE PROGRAM CONT’D
Bridge Students have the following opportunities:
Take two college classes for six college credit hours, transferable anywhere you want to attend college; at NO COST.
Free tutoring from another TRiO program, Student Support Services (SSS) for all Bridge participants
Attend workshops – Study Skills, Time Management, etc.
And if you attend UT-Arlington the Fall after TRiO Bridge, you can be eligible for Grant & Scholarship aid from UBMS & SSS of at least $1,500 in addition to what Financial Aid you receive from UT Arlington.

PROGRAM EXPECTATIONS
All Upward Bound Math & Science (UBMS) students
and parents should be fully aware that the right to
participate in UBMS is a privilege that must be
earned on a continuing basis.
Note: Staying active in the program throughout the year earns the
ability for you to participate in very meaningful activities until
you graduate.

PROGRAM EXPECTATIONS
Students are expected to have a strong commitment to academic excellence in all subject areas. It is each student’s responsibility to help make the best living-learning situation for everyone. UBMS participants are expected to:
Actively participate in both the academic year & Summer Residential Institute for the remainder of high school and attend summer activities every year until graduation.
Take high school courses that will prepare them for college;
Attend / complete activities as assigned (AY and summer);
Know and follow the policies and expectations as set forth by the University of Texas at Arlington and by UBMS;
Behave in ways that do not interfere with the learning of others, do not disrupt the educational process, and do not reflect negatively on the University or the Upward Bound Math & Science community;
Respect the rights of every student, teacher, all staff, University employee, or visitor to the school; and
Enroll in a college or university upon completion of high school.

Dress Code (more details in Student Handbook)
To make the best impression, participants must observe the following rules:
Adhere to common practices of modesty, cleanliness, and neatness.
Clothing bearing obscene, vulgar, or suggestive references to alcohol, drugs, sex, etc. is not permitted at anytime.
No halter-tops, spaghetti strap tops or shirts/blouses revealing cleavage or the mid-section of the body (stomach/navel area/ and backside) will be allowed. Shorts and skirts can be no more than 6 inches above the knee.
Spandex/bicycle pants may be worn only with another layer of clothes.
No sagging jeans/pants or shorts.
Pierced body ornaments are restricted to ears only.
Scarves, head rags, wave caps, bandanas, etc. are not to be worn at any time. Hats must be removed prior to entering a building, classroom or vehicle.
Swimwear should be one-piece suits for females and swimming trunks for males.
The UBMS program reserves the right to send any student back to room to change their attire due to their failure to adhere to the UBMS dress code.

Conduct / Behavior (details in Student Handbook)
Participants should be actively participating in all summer activities (class, enrichment, workshop)
Electronic devices (iPads, MP3, portable games, etc.) are not to be worn, played, or visible in class or activity.
Participants are to follow curfew times each day.
Participants should not engage in any inappropriate activity that is deemed immoral, sexual or degrading of any nature.
NO inappropriate displays of affection is permitted at any time. Certain behavior will result in termination from the program.
The UBMS program has the right to send a student home for certain program guidelines violation. More details on conduct and behavior are listed in the Student Handbook

SUMMER PROGRAM INCENTIVES
Participation during the summer UBMS students are eligible to earn stipend during the
Summer Residential Institute & Bridge Programs based on attendance and active participation in program activities.
Cash stipends are given of $15.00 each week.
Stipend amounts may be reduced based on review of a student’s completion of activities, participation, behavior and conduct.
Personal money is not necessarily needed unless to purchase additional items (souvenirs, personal items, etc.)
Certificate of Completion / Awards Based on performance in various classes and activities,
participants can earn awards during the six weeks.

SUMMER RESIDENTIAL INSTITUTE
- The program summer activities/curriculum provide participants with intense instruction and learning in core academic subjects: mathematics, science w/hands-on labs, language -literature/composition, research experiences, and foreign language, and
- Other opportunities for additional enrichment through elective courses.
PARTICIPANTS WILL:
Attend classes at 8:30 a.m. for four (4) hours in academic courses designed to prepare them for the next school year and future college experience,
Afternoon coursework includes research, competition design classes and elective courses for greater learning and for self enrichment and exploration.
Opportunities to work with Math, Science, Engineering (MSE) professors, college students and organizations through the classes, tour events, workshops and other activities.
Preparation and competition in Academic Bowl Competitions (U.I.L. based academic and athletic contests) are held during the summer program. First, Second and Third place individuals and team are rewarded.
Other activities include: recreational activities, community service projects and study sessions are planned to complete the students’ summer residential experience.

Summer Enrichment Trip
UBMS participants are eligible to attend the summer enrichment trip, if:
Must complete five-week requirements (completing courses and behavior/conduct are satisfactory)
Destination will be out-of-state (12th – 16th)
UBMS requests for students to be prepared to pay for one meal during the trip – $30. Note: Stipends could be used for this.
All participants will need to bring photo ID for travel purposes.

RESIDENCE HALL
Visitation Separate halls have been designated for male and female students. Students will not be
allowed in the hall designated for the other gender.
In order to make the best use of our time together, we can not permit visitors during the
week. However, parents are always welcome to visit participants. But, in order to do so, they
must submit a request at least one week in advanced and approved by the Program Director.
All visitors are subject to campus and UBMS regulations (no smoking, alcohol, dress code,
etc.).
Electronics, other electronics Other electronics devices (include, but not limited to, laptops, netbooks, tablets, iPads, iPods, smartphones,
cellphones, and e-Readers are restricted to the residential hall. Improper use of these items will result in
confiscation and should not be used during class or activities.)
Any mobile/electronic device seen or heard will be confiscated and held until the end of the program.
UBMS cannot assume responsibility for any mobile/electronic device lost, stolen, and/or mishandled; nor
allow parents to seek restitution from other program participants for damages and/or charges.
