ELECTIVE COURSE OFFERINGS

2013-2014

Typically  elective  classes  are  first  offered  at  the  middle  school  level.    However,  offering  elective  courses  at  the  intermediate  level  provides  students  with  multiple  options  allowing  them  to  make  more  informed  decisions  in  scheduling  as  they  move  through  the  middle  school  and  on  to  the  multitude  of  opportunities  provided  at  McCracken  County  High  School.    Cognizant  of  the  number  of  options  in  the  future  of  the  current  4th  &  5th  graders,  Lone  Oak  Intermediate  School  is  very  excited  to  be  able  to  offer  students  a  variety  of  electives  during  the  2013-‐2014  year!

Incoming  4th  and  5th  graders  will  have  the  opportunity  to  explore  a  new  area  of  interest  or  study  a  particular  area  in  depth.    Allowing  children  to  choose  something  they  are  already  interested  in  ensures  they  will  enjoy  the  class  as  well  as  strengthen  and  develop  their  current  skills.    In  addition,  encouraging  students  to  choose  something  new  and  different  is  certain  to  broaden  their  horizons.    Lone  Oak  Intermediate  School’s  schedule  has  been  structured  in  order  to  provide  students  with  curriculum  options  in  dance,  drama,  orchestra,  choir,  2-‐D  art,  3-‐D  art,  team  sports,  physical  education  and  robotics  in  addition  to  the  customary  library,  music,  art,  and  computers.

Students  will  still  be  required  to  take  a  core  semester  of  physical  education,  art  and  music  but  the  nontraditional  scheduling  provides  more  diverse  experiences  for  students,  while  maintaining  the  integrity  of  the  basic  and  elective  instructional  programs.    Allowing  students  to  choose  electives  provides  an  opportunity  to  explore  and  sample  different  subjects.  Students  are  encouraged  to  work  with  their  parents  and  teachers  to  build  a  well-‐balanced  schedule.
