Big BenThe name Big Ben actually refers to the clock's hour bell, the largest of the clock's five bells, the others being used as quarter bells.

Page 7: London Attractions

There were two bells cast as the clock tower's hour bell.

The hour bell was probably named after Benjamin Clockface Hall or Benjamin Caunt.

Page 8: London Attractions

The clockfaces have a diameter of almost 7.5m. The hour hand is 2.7m long and the minute hand is 4.25m long.

Tower Bridge

Plans for the Tower Bridge were devised around 1876 when the east of London became extremely crowded and a bridge across the Thames in that area of the city seemed a necessity.

Page 10: London Attractions

Five contractors and nearly 450 workers were involved in the construction of the 265 meter long bridge.

Page 11: London Attractions

Nowadays it is raised about 1,000 times a year.

Page 12: London Attractions

Tower Bridge lifts are pre-scheduled (for cruise ships, etc) so visitors can check the bridge's website to find out when it will rise and lower.

Page 13: London Attractions

Currently the bridge is undergoing a renovation project that should be completed in 2012

London EyeThe futuristic looking capsules, accommodating up to 25 passengers, were transported all the way from France by train through the chunnel.

Page 15: London Attractions

Each egg-shaped capsule is 8 meters long and weighs 500kg.

A complete turn takes about 30 minutes.

Tower of LondonConstruction of the Tower of London was initiated in 1070 by William the Conqueror, shortly after his victory at Hastings in 1066.

Page 18: London Attractions

Today the Tower of London is best known for its Crown Jewels.

Page 19: London Attractions

Tower was also a royal residence: several kings lived here, especially during turbulent times when the donjon seemed a lot safer than the palace in Westminster.
