Presentation Evening 2016Team Richmond secure 3rd placeThe Twickenham Stoop, home of our sponsors Harlequins, played host to the annual Team Richmond presentation evening on Wednesday 13 July. The evening was hosted by Richmond Council’s Sports Development team and attracted the participants, parents, team managers, volunteers and VIP’s to celebrate the achievements of the athletes and represent the respective medals and trophies won throughout the season.

2016 proved to be another successful year for Team Richmond, securing 1110 point in the overall Jubilee Trophy standings and 3rd place on the podium.

Participants were lucky enough to have their medals and trophies presented by new Harlequins signing Charlie Mulchrone and representatives from Thames Water who presented the victorious Regatta squad with their trophy for the 4th year in a row.

At the 2016 Games, Team Richmond was made up of participants from 43 different primary and secondary schools within the borough, who competed in over 40 competitions and won over 140 medals between them!

London Youth Games 2016 - Team Richmond HighlightsNovember 2015Team Richmond kicked off the 2016 London Youth Games season in heavy rain, wind and lots of mud at the Cross Country competition at Hampstead Heath in North London. The conditions proved tricky for a host of borough’s but it would be Richmond’s u15 girls squad who brightened up the day, securing team bronze medals.

February 2016The Inclusive Zone Basketball team continued to impress with another fantastic result at the UEL Sportsdock, taking home Silver medals. Their impressive run was halted in the final by narrowly losing 22-18 to a strong Lambeth side.

After breezing through the qualifying competition at Harrow in early February (setting 2 LYG record’s along the way!), the Girls Cricket team booked their place in the Final’s at Lord’s at the end of the month in what would turn out to be a rollercoaster of a day at the Home of Cricket. Impressive victories over Harrow in the Quarter-Finals and then an unbelievable victory over Bexley in the Semi-Final meant Hammersmith and Fulham would be the last opponents. But, it wasn’t to be for the Richmond girls and they would just fall short of meeting the winning target, but it was a magnificent effort by everyone involved to win silver medals!

May 2016The Girls Basketball squad impressed once again at the UEL Sportsdock, rising up to 5th position. Hackney Marshes was the venue for Boys ParaGames Football and Richmond finished in an impressive 5th place, after finishing 13th back in 2015!

The Junior Tennis team blitzed their group in the qualifying competition at the National Tennis Centre to book their place at the finals at the Redbridge Weekend.

June 2016A jam-packed June was to propel Team Richmond back to the top of the podium, with competitions galore throughout the month.

First, it was the turn of the feared Rowing, Kayak Slalom and Kayak Sprint squads to compete at the London Watersports Centre. Once again they proved they were the champions of London with team gold medals across the board in an impressive haul!

The next squad in action were the ParaGames Swimming team, who travelled to Beckenham Spa to compete. More medals were to follow for Team Richmond as 3 golds, 1 silver and 1 bronze were added to the impressive haul.

The following weekend it was the turn of Redbridge Qualifying Weekend, which saw the girls and boys Hockey qualify for the finals in some style and the boys

Table Tennis team to follow suit. Meanwhile, the Junior Tennis team impressed, making it all the way to the final but losing 2-1 after some nail-biting action to pick up team silver. The Senior Fencing team pulled off an amazing comeback to book their place in a semi-final, but it would prove to be a step too far and team bronze medals were thoroughly deserved.

Meanwhile the Sailing squad were competing at the Queen Mary Sailing Club across the whole weekend. With a host of individual medals won, it came to the team awards and Richmond would step onto the podium to collect bronze medals, a jump up from 9th in 2015!

The Angling team were another team to take home medals, securing team bronze at Tyler’s Common Fishery, as well as an individual gold medal in the senior category!

The Handball competitions also took place in June, at the iconic Copper Box in the Olympic Park. It was the girls team who stole the show (having no substitutes throughout), securing silver medals and valuable points on the leaderboard.

July 2016So after 9 months of competitions, the finals weekend would bring the curtain down on the 2016 LYG season, but there were still 12 sports to take place and lots of medals on offer at the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre, not to mention the Jubilee Trophy!

First off were the Mini Football and Mini Swimming teams, made up from those in years 5 and 6. It was the footballers who took home some silverware, winning bronze medals!

The Swimming squads got Team Richmond off to a great start on the Saturday with a host of individual medals, as Archery just missed out of the podium, finishing in 4th place. The highlight of the Saturday was to be the performance of the Boys Football team. After losing narrowly in their first match, the team were to go on an unbeaten run all the way to the semi-finals, before being edged out in a sudden-death penalty shootout by the eventual winners. A fantastic effort to achieve bronze and Team Richmond’s highest ever finish in the Boys Football.

The Sunday saw both Hockey sides compete at the finals and it was to be heartbreak on penalties once again as the girls missed out on a medal in the 3rd/4th place playoff. The boys however, would go one better and take home a well-deserved bronze.

Other highlights of the weekend included an individual Gold in the Aquathlon and a number of medals in the Indoor Rowing including Open Relay Silver.

After 9 months and 41 competitions,Team Richmond amassed 1110 points to finish on the podium once again in 3rd place! A big congratulations to everyone involved!
