WELCOME

Friday 25th to Monday 28th October 2019 sees London’s internationally renowned Festival of traditional Irish music, song and dance (formerly

‘Return to Camden Town’) subtly rebranded after 20 years to ‘Return to London Town Festival’. The 21st instalment of this major annual event will be predominantly based at the beautiful 4 Star Clayton Crown Hotel in another part of London with important historical links to Irish music in London – Cricklewood.

The North West London areas of Kilburn and Cricklewood are well known for having large Irish populations since the 1950s. In 1952 London’s most iconic Irish dance hall, The Galtymore, opened its doors in Cricklewood and went on to serve thousands of Irish people on a nightly basis for the best part of the six decades that followed. The venue catered to all, hosting céilí music in one part of the venue and more mainstream dance bands in the other.

The famous neighbouring hostelry ‘The Crown’, was originally a coaching inn, accommodating carriages passing between London, Elstree, Watford and St Alban’s since the 1850s. Rebuilt to its current form (a beautiful red sandstone building over three levels with elegant carvings inside) in 1900, The Crown pub became well known as a meeting place for Irish in London – the forecourt also served as a morning meeting place for Irish construction workers and potential employers on a daily basis. The pub is also famously referenced in the Dominic Behan song ‘McAlpine’s Fusiliers’ sung by The Dubliners – ‘Oh, the craic was good in Cricklewood and they wouldn’t leave the Crown..’

At the end of the last century, Dublin publican and hotelier, Tom Moran purchased The Crown plus an adjacent plot of land, and went on to build a fabulous 152 room hotel alongside the listed Victorian pub

building. Currently owned by the Clayton Hotels Group, the building boasts beautiful architecture, old and new. The Hotel’s stunning and spacious atrium welcomes the visitor to a huge complex which comprises a basement venue for up to 400 people, 3 bars, a living room, a restaurant, two dining spaces, plus numerous additional meeting, lounge and break out areas dotted around this impressive multi-level space (oh, and there’s a pool and gym too!). We have enjoyed hosting a number of concerts, rehearsals, parties and sessions at the venue since 2013 and are very excited about bringing the whole 4 day Festival here in its 21st year.

All regular Festival-goers should expect the same, consistently high standard of programming to which they have become accustomed over the last two decades, whilst enjoying the benefits of more space in luxurious surroundings with easy access to bars, restaurants and if needed - overnight accommodation. ‘Return to London Town Festival’ will offer 4 days of concerts, workshops, a céilí and an extended session trail – held at the Clayton Crown Hotel, or one of the additional Festival venues (walking distance from the Hotel).

In addition to the impressive line up offered at this year’s Festival, IMDL have launched a new ‘Return to Camden Town Concert Series’ to spread the ‘Irish music love’ more throughout the rest of the year in London. So far in 2019, we have enjoyed collaboratively hosting an ‘International Women’s Day Concert’ with the Irish Cultural Centre, featuring The Mulcahy Family and ‘Fair Plé Ladies of London’, Liz Carroll and Jake Charron at Rich Mix (Shoreditch), The Kilfenora Céilí Band as part of our ‘Irish Hooley at St Mary Magdalene’s’ (Paddington) and the first Music Network Ireland Tour in London at St Marylebone with Tara Breen, Laoise Kelly, Josephine Marsh and Nell Ní Chróinín.

For more details about these, this year’s Festival and more future IMDL events please check out www.returntolondontown.org and www.irishmusicinlondon.org

We look forward to welcoming you to Cricklewood in October.

breadth of his knowledge of Irish music. Born in County Antrim in 1944, Len’s love of Irish music began when his father, a fiddle player, took him to traditional sessions locally as a young boy. Throughout the 1960s, Len travelled around Ireland to record and preserve traditional songs, befriending singers such as Eddie Butcher and Joe Holmes, who became his mentor. He won the All Ireland Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann singing competition in 1971.

Len is a leading authority on traditional Irish song and has recorded more than twenty albums to date. He has collaborated with poets and storytellers, in particular John Campbell, with who he had a 20 year association. During the 1980s and 90s, John and Len took their performances to cross-community groups around Ireland. Since John’s passing in 2006, Len has toured regularly with storyteller Jack Lynch.

The band started out in the early 1980s as a duo of Belfast flute-player Frankie Kennedy and singer and fiddler, Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh, from Gweedore. They specialized in performing old Donegal fiddle music (then little known outside

Donegal) and unusual Northern flute tunes and rapidly became known for the style, power and inventiveness of their playing.

Altan has evolved over the years, in particular developing its trademark twin fiddle style. The band was signed to Virgin Records in 1996, the first Irish band of its kind to sign with a major label. They have since gained gold

and platinum albums and have appeared throughout the world.

Mairéad was named TG4 Gradam Ceoil Traditional Musician of the Year in 2017. This is one of Ireland’s highest musical honours and the award recognised her prominent role in supporting, nurturing and strengthening Irish traditional music.

After three decades of playing all over the world, Altan returned to the hills of Donegal to record their most recent album, The Gap of Dreams, which was released in March 2018.

the subtlety of his playing and is regarded as one of Ireland’s finest banjo players. He has held a long association with the Feakle Festival, where he released his debut album, Not Before Time… 39 Years in the Making, in 2018.Accordionist Graham Guerin, from North Kerry, has become a favourite duet partner for Páraic. The two share a passion for strongly rhythmic, traditional music, together with a deep

understanding of the old style of playing music and an impressive knowledge of tunes and sources. Graham features regularly as a tutor and performer at festivals throughout Ireland.Mayo bouzouki player Noel O’Grady was a member of the London based ‘Good Mixer Band’, which performed weekly in Camden Town in the 1980s. He regularly hosts sessions in Westport, particularly at Matt

Molloy’s famous bar. Noel was also a member of ‘Beginnish’, alongside Kerry accordionist Brendan Begley, Dublin fiddler Paul O’Shaughnessy and flautist, Paul McGrattan. He has featured on numerous recordings, including Matt Molloy and John Carty’s second release, Out of the Ashes.

She has been inspired and influenced by many other legendary musicians of the past and present, including Ella Mae O’Dwyer, Mary MacNamara, Bobby Casey and Jesse Smith. In recent

years Sarah has enjoyed passing on her love and knowledge of traditional music to many students both in Ireland and abroad. She regularly plays in a duet with Doireann Glackin and has toured with Dublin band Skipper’s Alley. Recently, she has performed at Museo internazionale e biblioteca della musica, Bologna, TradfestTg4 and has supported Martin Hayes and Denis Cahill at Tunes in the Church and the Milan Expo.

He and Caoimhín Ó Fearghail, his colleague in Caladh Nua, released an album of duets, Flute & Fiddle in 2018. In additional to Paddy’s accomplishments as a fiddle player and band

leader, he is currently earning a reputation of a fiddle-maker.From An Rinn in the West Waterford Gaeltacht, brothers Seán and Caoimhín O Fearghail are highly regarded multi-instrumentalists. Caoimhín began to learn the tin-whistle at the age of eight and quickly progressed to the uilleann pipes. He is also self-taught on flute and guitar and is much in-demand as an accompanist. Willie Clancy, Paddy Canny, Peter O’Loughlin, Paddy Murphy and Micky Hanrahan. Much of his repertoire today derives from the playing of these great musicians.

He has played professionally since the late 1970s and his discography is extensive. His most celebrated album is Noel Hill and Tony Linane (1979), a collaboration with fiddler Tony Linane, which also features Matt Molloy (flute), Alec Finn (bouzouki and mandocello) and Micheál O’Domhnaill (harmonium).

His most notable recordings are Í gCnoc Na Graí (In Knocknagree - 1985), with celebrated accordionist Tony MacMahon, The Irish Concertina One (1988 and voted Irish Folk Album of the Year), Aislingí Céoil (Music of Dreams – 1993), with Tony MacMahon and Iarla Ó Lionáird and The Irish Concertina Two (2005) with Alec Finn, Arty McGlynn, Brian McGrath, Liam O’Connor and Steve Cooney. He is accompanied by this evening by Fermanagh multi-instrumentalist, Brian McGrath.

NOEL HILL AND BRIAN MCGARTHNoel Hill, the doyen of the Irish concertina, hails from Caherea, in West Clare. His parents and grandparents were all concertina players and his playing was particularly influenced by that of his uncle, Padraig A Chnoic (Paddy Hill). The Hill family home was the last house in the area to hold traditional Irish house dances, where musicians were always welcomed. Noel was fortunate in being able to learn from many distinguished guests, including

THE MULCAHY FAMILYMusical families are often the backbone of Irish music. In earlier times, when traditional music was not always as widely regarded as it is today, they played a vital role in preserving and handing it down the generations. One of the most noteworthy is the Mulcahy Family of Abbeyfeale, West Limerick, who are making a welcome return to our festival

(they last visited us in 2016). Mick Mulcahy is one of the legendary living Irish accordion players. He won the All-Ireland senior title in 1972 and released his first solo album in 1976. In 1990, Gael-Linn released Mick Mulcahy agus Cairde, which Mick recorded with London banjoist Mick O'Connor, his longtime playing partner.

In more recent years, he and his daughters, Louise (flute,

uilleann pipes and whistle) and Michelle (harp, concertina, piano and fiddle) have performed together as the Mulcahy Family. In addition to playing in the family band, Louise and Michelle are formidable musicians in their own right. Michelle was TG4 Young Traditional Musician of the Year in 2006. She featured on Riverdance composer Bill Whelan’s album, The Connemara Suite, on a piece for harp and orchestra which he wrote for her. Her solo harp album, Suaimhneas, has received deserved critical acclaim.

Louise is regarded as one of the finest pipers and flute players of her generation. She was Live Ireland female musician of the year 2015 and is a noted teacher – she is a pipes tutor at the Willie Clancy Festival in Miltown Malbay and at Scoil Cheoil Westport. Her solo flute album, Tuning the Road, has been extremely well received since its release in 2014.

EILEEN O'BRIEN Scion of another famous Irish musical family, Tipperary fiddle player Eileen O' Brien is the daughter of the great Paddy O’Brien. One of the most prolific composers of traditional music, Paddy was instrumental in establishing the B/C style of button accordion playing as we

know it today. Eileen’s mother, Eileen Seery, was a noted singer and her uncle, piper Seán Seery and grandfather, fiddler Jim Seery, were both founder members of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann.

She is an All-Ireland champion and, like her father, a composer. She is a highly respected teacher and a tutor at the Irish World Academy of Dance and Music at the University of Limerick, where she teaches students undertaking both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. She has performed with many great musicians over the years, including Bobby Gardiner, Joe Burke, Ann Conroy- Burke, Martin Connolly, Jimmy McGreevy, Deirdre McSherry, Martin &

Seamus Connolly, Mary & Andrew Mac Namara, Geraldine & Eamon Cotter and Catherine McEvoy.

Eileen has recorded three albums to date – Newtown Bridge, The Fiddler’s Choice and Aon le h’Aon – and has produced two books of music, The Compositions of Paddy O’Brien and The Definitive Collection of the Music of Paddy O’Brien.

This evening, Eileen will be accompanied by Liverpool pianist Pete Quinn, who is a member of Artisan Row, In Good Company and previously played with The London Lasses. Pete is also one of the project leaders of IMDL's youth performance group 'The Trad Gathering'.

JOHNNY ÓG CONNOLLY, CLÍODHNA COSTELLO AND PÁDRAIG O DUBHGHAILL Johnny Óg Connolly, son of the great melodeon player, Johnny Connolly, began playing the accordion at the age of nine. He learned from his father and from Micheál Ó Coistealbha, winning his first All-Ireland title just two years later. A prodigy, he joined Na h-Ancairí, fronted by the legendary Conamara singer, John Beag Ó Flatharta, at the age of fourteen, spending eight years with the band and touring in England and America. In 1990, he recorded the first traditional album released by Cló Iar-Chonnacht, The Bees' Wing. In 1994, he joined the Seán Keane Band and performed widely with them Europe and North America.

In 1998 he recorded the acclaimed Dreaming up the Tunes, an album of banjo and accordion duets with Brian McGrath. During the same year toured with Michael Flatley's Lord of the Dance in Europe

and the Middle and Far East. In 2003 he settled permanently in Conamara, where he recorded a second duet album, Dusk Till Dawn, with Charlie Lennon in 2005.

He is a prolific composer; his recording, Aisling Yoshua (Joshua's Dream), featuring five new compositions, was released in April 2011. In 2012, he and fellow musician and composer Mary Bergin were commissioned by the Arts Council in Ireland to compose a 40-minute suite, Sruth. He recorded Siar, an album of his own compositions, in 2016 and in December 2018, he released a melodeon album, Fear Inis Bearachin in honour of his father.

Cliodhna Costello, from North Tipperary, began learning piano and whistle at the

age of six and progressed to the banjo shortly thereafter. She learned much from players such as John Morrow, Jody Moran, John Carty and Brian McGrath and was also heavily influenced by older fiddle and accordion music of Sligo and East Galway. She presently lives in Galway, where she plays and teaches regularly. She recently recorded with Johnny Óg Connolly’s on his album, Fear Inis Bearachin.

Pádraig O Dubhghaill was born in Inverin, in the Connemara Gaeltacht. He initially learned

the tin-whistle from Mary Bergin and took up the guitar at the age of 17. He holds an MA in Irish Music Performance from the University of Limerick and is much in demand as an accompanist and sound engineer.

Accordionist Conor Connolly was born in 1993. From Clarinbridge, in South Galway, he

is the youngest of three brothers. Although none of his family played music, his parents were keen listeners and traditional music was always playing on the radio and television in the family home. He has performed live and on radio with Frankie Gavin, taught at Feakle International Music Festival and is a regular at sessions on the Irish festival circuit. His playing is heavily influenced by legendary local musicians, Joe Cooley and Charlie Harris and the American recordings of P J Conlon. This year, Conor was named TG4 Gradam Ceoil Young Musician of the Year.

AFTERNOON CÉILÍ FOR ALLIn association with

• PARISH CÉILÍ BAND WITH CALLER VAL KNIGHT3pm • St Agnes’ Centre (Hall) • £10/£6 under 18s

This year, we are departing from our tradition of holding dedicated set dance céilís. Our céilí for all will feature a caller, to enable those who are less familiar with the intricacies of Irish dancing to participate.

Having met on London's thriving traditional Irish music session scene, a number of core musicians who

play fortnightly at The Parish Bar in Wembley decided to form a céilí band. This impressive 10 piece went on to win the Senior Céilí Band competition at the All Britain Fleadh in Kirkby, Lonsdale in June of this year – the first London band to win the title in over a decade.

Members include: Chris Maguire (accordion), Órlaith McAuliffe (flute), Jack Boyle (banjo), Brogan McAuliffe (concertina), Rita Farrell (flute), Susan Miller (fiddle), Fiona Gaffney (fiddle), Deirdre Glynn (fiddle), Sinéad Egan (piano) and Ciaran Farrell (drums).

Chris, Órlaith and Jack went on to win the Senior All Ireland Trio competition in Drogheda, in August of this year.

Dancers and listeners alike will enjoy the high-quality music on offer. Our caller, Val Knight, looks forward to welcoming you to try a mixture of céilí and set dancing. No experience or knowledge is required and beginners and seasoned dancers are all welcome.

THE VOICE OF THEIRISH IN BRITAINEVERY WEDNESDAYIN ALL GOOD NEWSAGENTS

My WEEK in TRADwith HelenMullen

SOMEONE said recently that if you can understand Brexit, ithasn’t been explained to you properly.

If you’re looking for something to take your mind off all thingsArticle 50 you aorta go see Heartbeat of Home - which openedat Piccadilly Theatre earlier this month. It’s a sort of Riverdancespin-off show based on one of the secondary characters. Orperhaps think of it as a franchise, like CSI.

The story begins with...haha kidding of course, there is nostory, just one set-piece dance extravaganza after another allloosely connected with the idea of ‘home.’

Shock horror there is also included in the show a sizeableamount of Latin dancing. Compared to their full-bodied hip-swivelling, the Irish dancers looked positively Victorian in theirdecorum and restraint - but they could shake their ankles like itwas nobody’s business.

In actual truth, the contrast of other cultures, including theimpressively athletic African dance, didn’t make the Irish dancewhimper in comparison. In fact, dare I say it (and wiping apatriotic tear) it will make you truly appreciate Irish dance as asight to behold.

So I wonder what this show is really about? Is this looseheartbeat of home just a way to thematically link the dancefrom different cultures (with Irish dance obviously taking thelead)?

Or is this about modern Ireland - with immigrants now landingon Irish shores in search of a better life and with them bringingtheir own rich culture?

As I recalled the start of Heartbeat of Home, the dancers areon a “ship” while the animated backdrop screen (utilised veryeffectively throughout to depict different landscapes) showsstorms waters and an island in the distance, fires raging, homeis no longer a welcome place, and the ship sails further andfurther away, the dancers turn towards a new home whilecarrying in their hearts all that they loved about their old one.

And sadly, this just reminded me of Brexit again, and I left thetheatre, heavy footed.

PADDY TUTTY, CAOIMHÍN AND SEÁN Ó FEARGHAIL Paddy, Caoimhín and Seán present Flute and Fiddle, an album of duets, first released at the November TradFest in Ennis in 2018.“How welcome it is to be asked to endorse such a quality fiddle and flute album as this from two young Waterford musicians. Attractive, effortless and well-chosen pieces make this recording a welcome companion to the collection of any follower of quality music.” John Carty

DOIREANN GLACKIN AND SARAH FLYNN (THE HOUSEKEEPERS) Doireann and Sarah released The Housekeepers in May this year. As a result of family commitments and the social norms of the day, women’s music-making was largely confined to the home, which explains why so many never received the recognition they deserved. Female musicians of previous generations, with the exception of the few who recorded commercially, tend to be remembered as peripheral figures in the tradition. This is far from a true reflection of their musicality, abilities or the esteem in which they were held.

Produced with assistance from the Arts Council of Ireland, The Housekeepers explores the lives and music of five remarkable female Irish traditional musicians from the early 20th century – Ella Mae O’Dwyer, Nora Hurley, Aggie Whyte, Ellen Galvin and Molly Myers – and celebrates their artistic legacy.

PÁRAIC MCDONNCHADHA, GRAHAM GUERIN AND NOEL O’GRADY Páraic, Graham and Noel present Páraic’s debut album, Not Before Time…39 Years in the Making, released at the Feakle Festival in 2018.

BRYAN ROONEY, JOHNNY ÓG CONNOLLY, JOHNNY MINOGUE AND PETE QUINN Johnny Minogue, from Whitegate, in North East Clare, initially learned music on his father’s accordion when he was a boy. However, he only really began to play Irish music seriously after he emigrated to London in the 1960s, at the age of 17. He went on to become a key figure on the London Irish

music scene – involved in the initial founding of West London Comhaltas in Fulham and leading the resident céilí band for 40 years at the famous (and now sadly no more) Galtymore ballroom in Cricklewood. The great Leitrim fiddle player, Bryan Rooney, has lived in London since the late 1960s and is recognised as one of the master fiddlers of his generation. His now classic album, The Godfather, was released in 1999 and was followed

in 2002 by Leitrim to London. After a gap of almost a decade, Bryan’s most recent recording, At Complete Ease, an album of duets with John Carty, was released in 2011. The album, which has also become a classic, features John’s son, James and Bryan’s brother Mickey, together with Alec Finn, Brian McGrath and Arty McGlynn. Bryan was named Musician of the Year in the 2012 TG4 Gradam Ceoil awards. From Liverpool, Pete Quinn's performing experience extends from John Cage at the Barbican through jazz fusion at Ronnie Scott’s to traditional Irish music at the BBC Proms. Formerly with The London Lasses, he has recorded and played with some of the greats of traditional Irish music. He is presently a member of Artisan Row.

MULLARKEYLondon based trio Mullarkey features Johnny Berrill (guitar, mandolin and vocal), Chris O’Shea (fiddle, bodhran and vocal) and Kathleen Sarsfield O’Shea (flutes, whistles, bouzouki, bodhran and vocal). The group released its debut CD, The Long Goodbye, this year and performs at various venues in London, around the UK and recently on Valentia Island, Kerry, supporting Galway’s renowned singer, Don Stiffe.

LONDON IRISH PENSIONERS CHOIRThe London Irish Pensioners Choir brings together more than 30 older Irish people, most in their 70s and 80s. They come from all over Ireland and have made their homes here in London over many decades. The choir was founded over 10 years ago. Although an independent group, it has been supported by the Irish Elderly Advice Network throughout this time. The choir has performed for audiences of tens of thousands including at London’s St Patrick’s Day celebrations in Trafalgar Square for several years, and as part of

the Irish community choir in the Royal Albert Hall in honour of President Michael D Higgin’s state visit to Britain in 2014. They have sung on UK television, including for Sir Terry Wogan on ITV and on the BBC’s 'The One Show.' They have performed on RTE Radio and Television and are regularly played by Donncha Ó Dúlaing on the very popular Fáilte Isteach (10pm on Saturday evenings on RTÉ Radio 1.)The choir has recorded a beautiful album of old Irish songs, Songs of Love and Emigration, which has been very popular with the Irish community, both in London and in Ireland.
