Long Island Visitors’ Guide6

It is indeed a pleasure to welcome you to picturesque, stress free Long Island. As you experience our crystal clear waters and drive through this beautiful, historical,

80 mile ‘long island’ you will be greeted by its warm, friendly and loving people. Long Islanders also pride themselves on their ‘clean, green and pristine’ island.

These features account for the fact that the island enjoys one of the highest rates of repeat visitors in The Bahamas. Guests return to Long Island again and again because they feel at home here and the activities are endless on this breath-taking island. Visitors can explore Hamilton’s Cave, take a dive in our world famous 663 ft. deep Dean’s Blue Hole or be a bit more daring and dive with the sharks at Shark Reef. Test your skills at bonefishing, deep sea or reef fishing. Or you can just relax and enjoy the sun, sand and sea on one of our many lovely, quiet beaches. Snorkel to your hearts content along our scenic coral reefs and shoals with the varied tropical fish that highly resemble the colors of the rainbow. We welcome investors to our beautiful shores and do hope that you will become so intrigued by your visit to this enchanting island that you will purchase a piece of property in our lovely island paradise. Long Island is home to one of the top ten beaches in the Caribbean, Cape Santa Maria Beach. Here the water is crystal clear and cool all year round. The beach itself is made up of miles of fine, powdery, white sand which people actually bottle up and take back home for their family and friends. The staff at the Long Island Tourist Office are so delighted that you have chosen to visit with us. We are here Monday through Friday, 9am–5pm to assist you in any way we can. We look forward to meeting you and answering your questions, emails and phone calls. We welcome your concerns and suggestions and thank you so much for your visit to our lovely island. We hope to have you back real soon. Remember that it is always better in the ‘Islands of The Bahamas’!!

Visitors to Long Island say, “The best part of Long Island is its people.” Long Islanders are hard-

working, spiritual, caring of one another, and fun. Stories’ being told of old ways give appreciation , and sometimes criti-cism, to today’s life-style, traditions are preserved and passed on to new genera-tions, and good people work together to make life a little bit better for everyone. The Long Island summer breeze is primarily South-East and, and in the “old times” when the only means of transport was sailing sloops, sailors went down-wind to the North, and up-wind to the South. Today we travel from “Down North” to “Up South,” meeting interest-ing people along the way

High on a hill, down North in Sey-mours, lives Mrs. Ophelia Smith. “Auntie Ophie,” as she is affectionately called, is an 88 year old, magnificent woman who carries herself in a truly aris-tocratic manner. She lives in the house where she was born and raised ten chil-dren. She and her husband worked hard, believing in education for their family. In those days the men went away spong-ing or fishing, and the women stayed home to raise the children and to farm. Ophelia considers herself, first and fore-most, a farmer. To this day she grows

peas, corn and sweet potatoes. For years she has walked down the hill to her boat and skulled across the bay to farm or to fish. Deeply spiritual, Ophelia is blessed with good health, a strong mind, and a strong body. She says, “From all walks of life, people come and see me, they come lookin’ for Ophelia. I live because God’s livin’ in me.” One can never leave Ophelia’s home feeling anything but good about life. Nurse Inez Spence has been the Nurse at the Simms Clinic for the past twenty-seven years. A humble, modest woman with an open Bible in front of her computer, she deeply believes that if you don’t get well, you can at least be com-fortable. Serving her fellow man, Nurse Spence tends to the ill, the elderly, the ba-bies and their mothers, and those in need of a listening ear or a hug. She says, “It doesn’t always have to be medicine from a bottle.” Nurse Spence says, “It’s all about caring, and, if I had to do it all over again, I would do the same thing.” Her compas-sion shines from her soft eyes If you were to ask many Long Island-ers who is the best story-teller, most would say Old Del.” He has twinkling blue eyes and a wonderful sense of humor. Delbert Cartwright, Sr., age 89, and his wife Emma live in Gray’s, in the house in which Del was born. They were married in the old-

est Anglican Church on Long Island, St. Mary’s. As a boy before school, Del, like all Long Island children of his generation, toted water, collected wood for “cooking on fire,” fed creatures (sheep and goat) and ground corn on weekends. He then would walk twelve miles to school, and never car-ried lunch as they all collected wild fruit from the bush. Del sailed smack sloops (rounded-hull wooden sailboats) to Nas-sau laden with cattle, sheep, and produce from Long Island. Sometimes calm winds would create a thirty day’s journey as they stopped along the way on the “Cays” so the “creatures” could have water. Del, like so many others, went “off on contract,” going to Florida for many months to work when American men were away at war. Del has always farmed and still has a “kitchen gar-den.” He believes that nature was man’s lesson book before the bible as man was totally dependent upon the soil and the sea. As Del tells his stories of old times and Long Island’s history, Emma quietly plaits, making beautiful baskets (as does

Del.) He recently was honored by the Ba-hamian Government for his Outstanding Contribution to the community. Further “Up South” lives Orlando Turnquest. “Landa” has been a farmer for over fifty years and to this day receives awards for his crops. Long Islanders are known as “Sheep Runners;” Landa tends to his flock. He, too, went “off on contract” to the cane fields in Fellsmere, Florida at the age of seventeen. There was always a job for the Long Island “babies” because they knew how to work. Landa, also a musician, has had a succession of bands. He has played at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC, in New York, and in

New Orleans. He and his band members are preserving Long Island’s Rake ‘n Scrape Music through their band “The Originals.” Back when there was no electricity, televi-sion, or computer games, Long Islanders would sit under a tree and tell stories. Someone would say, “Let’s make Music,” and the stories would turn into song lyrics. Long Island’s own Rake ‘n Scrape Music began. The first instrument was the tam-bourine, fashioned from a wooden cheese box, the tops of tinned cream cans as jingles, and a goatskin as the drum head. The raised letters on an old gin bottle were scraped with a spoon, and an old concer-tina or accordion was played. The dance was the traditionally structured, Eng-lish Quadrille (“Heel-toe-heel toe”). The Originals play at Long Island’s significant events. Gentle, barefoot, straw-hatted Laurin Knowles of Mangrove Bush has worked hard all his life and has raised eight children with his wife Sue. Laurin is well-known for his wooden boat building and sailing skills, the quality of construc-tion by “Laurin Knowles and Sons,” and his willingness to always lend a helping hand. Three times he has been honored by the Bahamian Government for his service to the community. A visit with Laurin generally includes an invitation, “Want to see my trophies?” He has rooms filled with

them as he began sailing in Exuma Regatta (The National Family Island Regatta) over fifty years ago. Bahamian sailing craft, originally for transport and for fishing, are now sailed in inter-island regattas. These sloops are still built, according to specifi-cations silently passed on through genera-tions, from native materials beginning with a stem from local hardwood such as wild tamarind or cork. Laurin’s skills have been passed on to his sons who are building and sailing “winning boats.” His sons, grand-sons and granddaughters are now winning races, following his sailing legacy.

“Deep in the South” we meet Sharon Cartwright of McKenzies. Sharon is the retired principal and teacher at Morrisville Primary School. She lov-ingly taught her students, believing that “each child has capabilities once he puts his mind to it.” She says that the greatest reward of teaching is to see the face of a struggling child light up. Her retirement party was a true tribute to her accomplish-ments which were above and beyond the call of duty. Modestly, she says, “Let the work that I do speak for me:” the banner at her party stated, “45 Years of Dedicated Service.” Sharon has not stopped with that. She is now working on Local Government, trying to give the people of South Long Island the best representation she and her colleague can give. She says that she sim-ply measures her success as an educator

by her children, all of whom she had the honor to shape and mold, and who lead useful and productive lives. Just six individuals have been show-cased here, but there are many other spe-cial, spiritual Long Islanders who have earned our appreciation, admiration and thanks. As you meet them, ask them to tell you their Long Island stories. Alan Dixon, Burnt Ground: Shell-Art-ist, Minister and Church-Builder, Roofer, Landscaper, and FarmerElsie Knowles, O’Neills: Dedicated to preserving the art of Long Island’s Straw Work. Joerg and Gaby Friese, Monika and Gerd Fuhrman, and Peter Kuska, Stella Maris: The “family” that created and served the Stella Maris Resort and Community for over 35 years.Louise Pelicanos, Bunches: Serving her community and preserving culture her entire life. Ask her to show you the Qua-drille that she learned as a small child, lay-ing on the ground, while “Mummy danced round us.”Sylvia Scriven, Deals: Ten year member of Parliament who retired to Long Island, began Long Island’s Kiwanis, and serves her community though her church, her kitchen, and her organizational skills.Mario Simms, Simms: “Chief cook and bottle washer” of the Blue Chip Restaurant in the Simms Settlement. Mario silently feeds those in need and truly lives his be-lief in the value of hard work. Ena Major, Clarencetown: Proprietor of a small shop that has a representation of work of many Straw-Work artists. Ms. Major is a silent heroine in her community, having received the Damien award for ser-vice to the poor.

The International Persons Landhold-ing Act passed in 1993 made it easier for non-Bahamians and companies under their control to own property. 1. A non-Bahamian or permanent resident who purchases or acquires an interest in a condominium or property to be used by him as a single family dwelling or for construction of such dwelling must apply to the secretary to the Investment Board to register the purchase following completion of the purchase. 2. Upon receipt of the above the acquisition is registered and a certificate of registration issued. 3. A permit to acquire property is required as a pre-condition to comple-tion of the purchase if the property is undeveloped land and the purchaser would become the owner of two or more contiguous acres. A permit is also required in cases where property being purchased is not for use as a single family dwelling (for example if the purchaser is buying a resort, restaurant or other commercial venture).

4. Non-Bahamians who own homes in The Bahamas may apply to the direc-tor of immigration for an annual home owner’s residence card. This entitles the owner, spouse and dependent children to enter and remain in The Bahamas for the duration of the validity of the card. This is intended to facilitate entry but does not confer resident status. All applications for permits along with fees made payable to the Public Trea-sury should be submitted to the Ministry of Financial Services & Investments for consideration by the Investment Board.

Fee ScheduleCertificate of Registration fee ……$250.00Permit Fee ..................................$500.00Annual home owner’sresidence card ............................$500.00

What is Stamp Duty? Although there are no taxes on capital gains, inheritance, corporate and personal income, dividends and interest in The Bahamas there are Real Property Tax and Stamp Duty. Real Property TaxIn respect of owner-occupied propertyup to $250,000 ........................... exempt$250,000 - $500,000 ......................3/4%$500,0001 - $500,000.00 ..................1%$500,000.00 + ..................................¾%In respect of unimproved propertyup to $3,000 .....................................$30$3001- $100,000 ...............................1%$100,001 or more ........................1 1/2%In respect of any other property:up to $500,000 ..................................1%$500,001 or more ............................. 2%
