    A highland festival33rd annual Longs Peak Scottish/Irish HighlandFestival begins with Sept. 10 Tattoo

    More than 80,000 attendees areexpected for the annual LongsPeak Scottish/Irish Highland

    Festival. The 33rd edition of this annualevent runs Thursday, Sept. 10 throughSunday, Sept. 13 at the Stanly Park Fair-grounds.

    The festival began in 1976 and hasgrown to be one of the largest and most

    majestic Celtic festivals in the U.S. Morethan 50 events are on tap, includingjousting, Highland games, musical acts,dance performances and dog show con-tests. There will also be plenty of Scottishand Irish food, drink and crafts. Thou-sands of spectators will line Elkhorn Ave.Saturday at 9 a.m. for one of Americas

    ago, it was just two booths in the Cen-tennial Plaza on Elkhorn Ave. said Dr.James Durward, festival founder. We arenow considered to be one of the fivelargest events in Colorado. People comefor the great food, entertainment and

    Scottish heritage. This year we also havenew events, including strongman compe-titions and heavy armor jousting.

    World-class jousters headline the festi-val as they vie for the sports largest pursein kill and accuracy events, as well as theall-new heavy armor competition. TheHighland games showcase equally talent-ed athletes displaying amazing strengthwhile vying for the U.S. and internation-al pro and amateur championships in thecaber toss, hammer and stone throw.

    Each day of the festival, Estes Parksbreathtaking mountains play backdropto more than 1,000 Scottish, Irish andWelsh dancers while Celtic rock, folkand traditional bands liven up the clearnights. Those seeking a true glimpse intoCeltic culture can top it all off by sam-pling traditional food and drink as wellas browsing the wares of more than 100importers and crafters of Celtic goods.Visitors can also check out their own

    familys genealogy by visiting the more

    than 70 Scottish family clan and societybooths.

    The festival kicks off Thursday at 7:30p.m. with a Tattoo a traditional parade

    ground concert of military bands. TheTattoo, which features the 1st BattalionScots Guard from Buckingham Palaceand the U.S. Army Fort Carson Mount-ed Color Guard among others, will alsotake place Friday and Saturday eveningsat 7:30 p.m.

    On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, thefestival fairgrounds will open from 9 a.m.to 5 p.m. Nightly concerts and otheractivities will take place throughout theweekend. For more information and to
