VILL

E Surrounded by lakes and forests, Longville, Minnesota has been a popular vacation des-tination for many years. Located in North Central Minnesota, the area provides some of the best fishing, boating, water sports, hiking, and biking in the summer and fall and cross country skiing, ice fishing, and snowmobiling in the winter and spring. Nowhere is there more diversity of scenery and recreational activities as there is in the Longville Lakes area.

TSLONGVILLE – 100 yEarS OLd aNd STILL GOING STrONG.

In September 1906, a writer for the Pine Tree Blaze newspaper visited Longville and wrote a column about it. This is what he wrote:

To our astonishment we found quite a vil-lage there. One odd feature about it was that there were so many log buildings and one surprising thing we noticed was that it was a very peaceable town. The business buildings are of frame, well constructed and nice appearing. A fine school house also adds to the beauty of the place. A briskly running river runs through the town and a dam causes a continuous roar of the water that can be heard all over town, making one feel dull and drowsy when the thermometer is up in the 90’s. There are a number of lakes around Longville. If you want a good place to fish and a first class place to stay, go to Longville. You are sure to be satisfied. It is now 2009 and visitors can still agree with that long ago written column.

Longville Municipal Airport, located less than 1/2 mile north of town on Highway 84, is within walking distance of downtown Longville’s friendly stores, restaurants and motel. Because the air-port is centrally located among the approximately 400 area lakes, when you fly into Longville it is a quick get-away to your favorite resort or vacation spot.

Serving Longville and the surrounding communities for over 50 years the airport provides a convenient and safe location for North Memorial Air Care helicopter to intercept critical medical and trauma patients for the fastest possible transportation to medical care centers. The airport is also a base of operations for several local pilots who donate their time and aircraft for charitable flights through non-profit organizations such as Angel Flights and Veterans Airlift Command, provid-ing transportation to people and families in need of specific medical care at distant locations.

The Longville Flyers, an active flying group, meet informally on Saturday mornings at Patrick’s restaurant and welcome all pilots and aviation enthu-siasts to join them at 9:00 AM for breakfast or coffee.

Home of Levi

Levi started riding snowmobiles at the young age of twelve. He saved money forhis first snowmobile by bagging groceries. Levi then entered his first race. Organizers almost didn’t allow him to ride because of his young age and small size. He placed second at his first race and began racing regularly after that. Levi had great success as a snocross racer, but in 2007 he decided to give freestyle a try. After learning several tricks, including the back flip (a snowmobile weighs 400+ lbs.), he entered his first freestyle competition and won. Levi had a breakout Winter X Games in early 2008. He won two gold medals and was awarded “Most Outstanding Athlete of the Winter X Games”. Levi decided to compete in all four snowmobile events in 2009, the most events of any athlete. Levi garnered more on-air coverage than any other athlete during the 2009 Winter X Games. In large part, this was due to his success from the previous year, and also because of the the rumor that Levi was planning on attempting a double back flip in the “Next Trick” competition. Levi did attempt the double back, the first ever in competition, and narrowly missed completing the trick by overshooting the landing. Levi plans on returning to the 2010 Winter X Games with a similar determi-nation and more new tricks.

The trail of sites along the Great River Road begins at the Mississippi River headwaters at Lake Itasca.

BIrdING IN ThE LONGVILLE arEaBy Susan Seymour (A Longville Resident)

Longville is surrounded by the Chippewa National Forest which is rich in woods and water habitat where many of Minnesota’s 313 regular bird species nest during the late spring and early summer. From anywhere around Longville one can look up and often see a soaring Bald Eagle, one of hundreds that nest in the forest area. Longville’s forests are home to Black-capped Chickadees, White-breasted Nuthatches, wood-peckers including the magnificent Pileated, Baltimore Oriole, Rosebreasted Grosbeak, Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Eastern Phoebi, Song Sparrow, Gray Catbird, Red-eyed Vireo, Yellow Warbler, American Goldfinch, Purple Finch, American Crow, Blue Jays, and American Robin. Near the shore or on the lake will be Tree Swallows, Belted Kingfishers, Eastern Kingbirds, Red-winged Blackbirds, Green Blue Herons, Common Loons, Ring-billed Gulls, Wood Ducks and Mallards. The Longville area is included in the Audubon-Great River Birding Trail, one of the major birding trails in Minnesota. The trail of sites along the Great River Road begins at the Mississippi River headwaters at Lake Itasca, about one hour northwest of Longville.

The fishing stories that add to the history of our lakes are legendary. But pictures and tales tell only part of the story. Our lakes have a long history of exceptional fishing that can only be truly understood by experiencing them yourself.

Catch a glimpse of a stringer of fish with smiles attached to the ends and you can feel the legends grow. Come on over... and you’ll create your own memories on our lakes.

BOaTING

Longville is surrounded by many beautiful lakes of various sizes and terrains. No matter what size boat you have there is a place for you. Fishing, Water ski-ing, Jet skiing, Cruising, Sightseeing, Photography; our lakes offer the best in outdoor playgrounds.

From a quiet morning canoe ride to a tube full of happy kids, our “Up North” lakes offer the best of MN boating. Clean, clear waters not crowded with shore to shore boats are the highlight of a northern MN vacation.

Don’t have your own boat? Just ask your “Up North” resort to find just the right outfit for you and your fam-ily. Whether it is a basic fishing boat, a more deluxe model, a pontoon for the whole family, or a boat for skiing and tubing, we can get you on the water.

Get outside and get on the water. Enjoy the many lakes of the Longville Area.

G ThErE arE huNdrEdS OF MILES OF TraILS IN ThE arEa.

For the Mountain Biker, try the Wood Tick Trail, just West of Longville. It travels through the scenic Chippewa National Forest past Moccasin Lake and other smaller lakes to join up with the “Paul Bunyan” multi-use trail, just North of Hackensack. Also try the Chippewa Trail that travels north-ward through the Chippewa National Forest. Plan on a few days for exploring these heavily forested scenic trails.

There are 100+ miles of paved trails for bik-ers, in-line skaters and hikers. Sixty miles of paved bike trail makes the Paul Bunyan Trail one of the best in Minnesota. When completed it will stretch 100 miles from Brainerd in the South to Lake Bemidji State Park in the North. Today, you can bike from Brainerd to Hackensack on a newly black-topped trail. The trail goes through secluded woods, meadows, alongside lakes and through several towns. The 7 com-munities through which the trail passes have developed many amenities for bikers.

The newly black-topped 34 mile Heartland Trail is located between Walker and Park Rapids. Between these 2 communities, the scenic trail weaves through woods, lakes and the communities of Akeley, Nevis and Dorset. Each community provides abun-dant amenities for bikers.

Hiking and BikingThere are over 100 miles of paved trails for bikers, in-line skaters and hikers.

TurTLE ra

CESraCING INFOrMaTION

All Games, Contests and Races are held in the center of town on County Rd 5.

You may bring your own turtle to race, but its shell must be larger than 5 inches. Don’t worry, if you don’t have a turtle, use one of ours. Turtle vendors supply us for the whole summer.

Each entrant receives a turtle race button and a numbered sticker. When the races begin, turtle vendors bring their turtles in buckets and place them around the race circle. The racers choose a bucket and turtle to stand behind.

When the race announcer gives the signal, the racers stick their number on the shell, put the turtle on the ground, place their hopes and dreams on it and exit the circle. The win-ning turtle and racer is identified. Vendors gather up turtles & buckets, replace turtles that have raced with new ones, and get ready for the next race.

The fastest winner and the slowpoke winner of each heat will receive a ribbon and “turtle bucks” and the right to compete in the grand race. This procedure is repeated until every-one has raced.

The Turtle Racing Capital of the World

a SPECIaL rESOrT TurTLE raCE

Is also a part of the afternoon lineup. Racers represent the resort at which they are stay-ing and race against each other. Ask your resort if you can represent them at the races. They will give you a Resort Turtle Race Ticket. Present the ticket at the giant Turtle Mobile to get signed up. The winning racer gets a bagful of prizes, and the win-ning resort gets a certificate to display. There is also a fee for the resort race.

haNd WaShINGFaCILITIES

In the interest of good health, we have warm water, soap and towels. All racers are asked to wash their hands after handling the turtles.

BOy LakE

Here’s what Minneapolis Star Tribune writer, Ron Schara, says of Boy Lake in his listing of little known walleye hot spots: “Oh boy, here’s one that oughta be good. Located north of Longville, Big Boy is 3,145 acres of good fish-ing, with a walleye count that is twice the state average.”

LakE INGuadONa

Lake Inguadona is located 3.5 miles east of Longville on Cass County Road 7. The lake is over 4 miles long and is 1/2 mile wide on the south end. Little Boy River flows through the lake. There is also access to Rice Lake on the south through the Little Boy River.

BLaCkWaTEr LakE

Blackwater Lake is a 722-acre that has 7.5 miles of shoreline and a maximum depth of 67 feet. This lake is primarily has north-ern pike, walleye, and largemouth bass and secondarily for bluegill, black crappie, yellow perch, and tullibee (cisco), and yellow perch.

Northern pike are abundant in Blackwater Lake and the catch rate has been historically high compared to others.
