Gonna wash that gray right outta yourwardrobe this winter? Not so fast – notwhen fashion designers are showing offtheir dark sides this season. Get ready to gogray with your shopping list and you’ll findthat there’s a silver lining out there too:These shadowy colors go with everything.

Blacks and grays are prominent and thatis directly attributable to the economy andthe practical mindset that has swept overthe country. Experts predicts that we’ll all bewrapping up in dark hues for winter, but wewill be “stronger” for it. Just take a look at thename that Pantone, the international color

forecasting service, has come up with toidentify their new gray this fashion season – iron.

It is strong yet understated, and caneven be considered the ‘new black’– a somewhat warmer gray with an undertoneof brown – a grounded color that works so well as background to so many other shades.

As the Dow dips, fashion designers aresending out their iron maidens ready to dobattle in the dark days ahead. But these areanything but depressing clothes. We may bein some tough times, but the runways werefull of glimmering signs that we’re always insurvival mode and we want to look good nomatter what our stock portfolios say.

Even the classics are getting a dimmertwist this fall. Burberry’s newest fall lineup steers away from the British company’s age-old traditional camel plaid patterns and comes up with an edgier collection stampedwith ink colors that easily blend with its other black and granite combos. Burberry’smetallic shearling leather coat in dark gray

(that’s grey for the Brits) is a fashion standout.

Take a cue from designers who playeda shining role for winter – embellishing theirclothes and accessories with metallic studs, silver link chains and crystal embroideries.Go a little exotic even when wearing basicblack and gray. It’s the sparkling touches that will make all the difference in a gloomy mood.

Charlotte Ronson adds lots and lots of art deco beading to brighten up herdresses and blouses. And the liquid gray column gowns and dresses from the Carolina Herrera and the Calvin Klein collections are the ultimate in lightening up a dreary party wardrobe.

But if you’re a little tougher, then blackleather is something you’ll want to add toyour wardrobe. This ‘80s classic is making abig comeback in short jackets, retro blazers, skinny skirts and pants. In high gloss, it’s a bright spot on the dark horizon. And, if you're really brave, check out theblack leather shorts from Miss Sixty’s collection.

If you’re a true-blue trend follower, you might think hard-core rock band, but ifyou’re not ready to go all out on your graydays, then only a little dab may be all youneed. Stick to an embroidered velvet pump,a studded crystal cuff bracelet or a sparkling leather belt.

Embracing the dark days of fashion alsogives us a reason to rethink what clothes we already own. It also makes it even easier to shop in yourown closet as almost everyone owns something either gray or black that can be pulled out and revitalized with a shot of some of the other brighter choices.

Michael Kors is one designer whowalks both on the dark and the bright sidefor fall with a collection filled with blacksatin trench coats, glossy black leatherdresses, black feathered fox vests, charcoalovercoats and cigarette trousers as well aslots of black and white tweed. He pops themurky palette with vivid hits of neon pink, bright orange and acid yellow. And in thesegray days, a burst of sunshine is always appreciated.

BEAUTY BUYS

The holiday season re-quires multi-tasking – buypresents, throw or go toparties and arrange travelplans while still workingand maintaining a per-sonal life. Whetheryou’re looking for apresent for yourselfor for someone else,a spa package is agift that offers more than just agreat deal; a few precious hours of pamper-ing and peace of mind can make all the dif-ference in getting through the hectic season. Consider offering the womanin your life – or yourself – a beauty deal thatwill save time, money or both yet also makeher feel cared for. Taking time out for an afternoon at a spa can be a great way to rejuvenate while preparing for a big nightout or just shoring up some tranquilityagainst the days ahead. Also, consider the

many beauty kits offered as gifts during theseason as a kind of portable spa.

Another way in whichto indulge holi-day deals with

practicality is tobuy the woman in

your life aprepackaged set of

beauty products. Sephora,

found throughout theUnited States,

offers several boxedkits listed as “packed”

with their best-sellersand biggest obsessions, all of which werehand-picked “by Sephora’s resident beautybuffs. All less than $40, the kits are perfectfor travel, as each item included is less than 3ounces. According to a consultant inSephora’s store in New York’s Times Square, the “Splashstash Waterproof Deluxe Sampler”is always a good choice; no matter when orwhere a woman is traveling, having water-

proof essentials available is always handy. Another recommended kit from Sephora isthe “Bare Escentuals Get Started Kit.” For afraction ($60) of the full retail price for eachproduct, customers receive two foundationpowders, blush, a primer, a setting powderand several makeup brushes. Customers canchoose kits to match their skin tones andlearn application techniques through theDVD included.

Benefit, a spunky cosmetics companybased in San Francisco, also offers severalmulti-tasking beauty kits for the womanwho’s on the go. Benefit’s “Smokin’ Eyes” kitis easy to drop into a purse or stash in atravel bag and offers several eye shadows, eyeliner, primer and a few beauty tools.“Brows A-Go-Go” lets busy women tametheir brows into submission anywhere, withseveral brushes, a small pair of tweezers andcomplimentary shades. Or try “Rush Hour” –a good-for-all-skin-tones cream, lipstick, blushand even eye shadow that can do doubleduty – or more – just like most women dur-ing the holiday season.

Holding the baby might be the first joyyou experience as a new grandparent, butthe real fun comes later as children growand the bond between you deepens. Thequestion is how to turn the time you spendtogether into a meaningful relationship, andthe experts say it's easier than you mightthink.

It’s about spending time and followingthe child's lead. Ask him what he wants todo and then follow along. His parents areprobably too busy to do this with him.

Fay said his toddler grandson’s favoritepastime when he comes to visit is to push alightweight vacuum cleaner around the rugs, which earns his grandparents praise andgives him a sense of making a contribution.

The key is shared experiences, but they can be simple. It’s important to consider age, personality, interests, attentionspan, abilities and skills. For young children,a visit to a boat dock or a fish market or awalk around the block can fill the bill.

Don’t plan an arts and crafts activitythat might be beyond their developmentalskills. They’ll just get frustrated and youwon’t make a good memory.

It’s also important to choose an activityyou’ll both enjoy.

Think about it from the child’s point ofview: You might love the natural history museum, but the child might be bored. Butmake sure it’s fun for you, too. Try to find amiddle point – a musical group you’ll bothenjoy or a video game you both like to play.

Add music – listening, singing, dancingor making up songs – to whatever elseyou’re doing. And she said very often thebest entertainment is right beneath your nose.

Look around at the things you take forgranted in your environment that will be a treasure-trove for your grandchildren

Think seasonal. Holidays are great excuses for craft activities, parties or educational outings to find out more aboutthe occasion.

Do chores together as a great way tospark conversation with older children.Work on your car and ask them to help out. They can learn about tools, and you’ll be able to talk about all kinds of things thatmight be uncomfortable in a face-to-face situation.

Cards, chess and other board games are also good conversation-starters.

Fix a meal together. Even little kids canhelp make macaroni and cheese, and theyfeel great about it.

As children get older, teach them aboutyour interests – bowling, tennis, gardeningor other hobbies. And ask them what theycan teach you about computers, iPods andcell phones. Teaching each other is magic.

Both experts mentioned volunteeringtogether.

Take a volunteer vacation or work with Habitat for Humanity. This instills character and values as it creates a bondingexperience.

But how do you stay connected withgrandchildren who live far away?

Electronics such as text messaging aregoing to help. A connection doesn’t have tobe long to be meaningful. An e-mail can beas simple as ‘I love you. I’m thinking aboutyou. I hope you’re having a great day.

A Web camera and Skype account areanother way to keep in touch. Send cards orletters in which you tell the kids about yourself.

Adults often just ask them questions, and they feel interrogated.

Goyer said to capitalize on the time youdo have together. Involve the children inplanning a visit, and make a scrapbook ofyour adventures. When the child goes home, make color copies to send so that you canrehash what you did over the phone or in e-mails and keep the memories alive.

Still wondering about what to do whenthe grandkids come to visit? Here are somemore possibilities:

Create an African safari with stuffed animals.

Put together a train set and build a village.

Paint on the windows with washablemarkers made specifically for glass.• Stage a scavenger or treasure hunt.• On a rainy day, have an indoor picnic.• Make up stories with the child as the main

character. You start, and then let him or her finish.

• Decorate a pillowcase with fabric markers.• Interview each other with a video camera.• Have a tea party with hot cider, finger

sandwiches and cookies. Use the good china.

• Camp out overnight in the family room.

Any home-design decisions, whetherwhile building a new home or improving an existing one, need to bethought out carefully. That means taking intoconsideration the needs of every member ofthe family – including your pets.

It is possible for humans to share ahome with one or more four-legged friendswithout it turning into a zoo. The goal is to make an environment that is safe and comfortable for your cat or dog while protecting any property from gettingsmashed or shredded. Any homeowner with animals who doesn’t prepare theirhome properly is asking for trouble.

A good approach is to pet-proof yourhome as if you were childproofing it. Consider the world from their vantage point.Take an inventory of all the indoor plantsand make sure that none of them are toxicto animals. Consult a veterinarian if you have any doubts.

Anything that is within reach of a dog and its tail should be moved to higherground. Dogs see the world as their chewtoy, so any exposed electrical wires need tobe secured.

Drapes that have loose, dangling fabricwon’t last long with a cat around, and, no matter how tall it is, all pieces of furniturecan be scaled by your beloved feline. Sodon't think that family-heirloom vase on thetop shelf of a bookcase is safe. It's not.

The furniture isn’t safe either, even if

you're suc-cessful inkeepingyour crit-ters from claiming them astheir own. Fur will find a way ontocouches and chairs regardless if a pet climbsup on them. One way to camouflage it is tobuy furniture that matches the color of yourfurry friend’s fur.

If buying new furniture isn't an option,an alternative is to get tailored slip coversmade from a cleanable fabric, particularly ifyour dog or cat is allowed to lounge on thecouch. White is an ideal color, surprisingly, since you can always bleach it if the pet hasan accident or jumps on it with muddypaws.

One type of fabric that should beavoided in upholstered furniture is mi-crofiber ultrasuede. It is very smooth, comfortable and looks great, but is also anightmare if there are animals around.

It acts like a magnet for pet hair. Youmight as well use it for a pet brush, becauseit sticks right to it.

A fabric similar to suede that is mucheasier to clean is leather because it’s a natural material -- unless you put a bunch of finishes on it. It’s easy to clean and it’s OK if it gets kind of weathered, because youwant that look in a lot of leathers.

When your cat or dog isn’t on the

furniture or outside, they’ll

likely be found lounging on the

floor. And whereverthey go, fur is sure

to follow. Hard-sur-face floors are easier

to clean than carpets, especially if your pet is still going throughpotty training and prone to accidents.

Spray cleaning a hard floor is a mucheasier job than scrubbing a thick carpet. Andwhen fur builds up on a hard floor, a drySwiffer will pick it up very easily, as will avacuum.

Most homes have at least one roomwith wall-to-wall carpet. Pet owners shouldconsider a material that has a pattern thatwill hide dirt or stains rather than a solidcolor. White is completely off-limits.

Since both dogs and cats spend a lot oftime sleeping on the carpet, inhaling anyfumes it may be emitting, the material is animportant factor. Carpets made from naturalfibers will give off far less toxins than thosemade from nylon.

"Wool is much more stain resistant and water resistant than people think. It'sa natural fiber, so you don't have toxins thatcome into the air," Pollak said. "It's a muchmore expensive alternative than fiber, but if you can afford it, I love wool."

Pets need to be considered in improvements and décor

Are your water bills rising out of control? Are you interested in conservingwater to help the environment but justaren't sure what to do?

The amount of water most people gothrough in their homes on a daily basis issubstantial. According to the American WaterWorks Association, an international nonprofitdedicated to safe and sustainable water, atypical single-family home uses 350 gallonsof water per day indoors and outdoors. Atleast 69.3 gallons are used indoors alone.

Most people use more water than theyneed and few simple changes in your lifestyle can result in some dramatic savingsin terms of water use and in how much you pay for your water bills.

There are easy and inexpensive ways tosave water that won’t dry up your bank account or take up lots of time. It helps tostart out small and to do lots of research onany products before buying them.

Cherry-pick the savings. Do the easiestand cheapest things first. You can save 30 to

35 percent of water in the home with littleinvestment.

Starting with the bathroom, the biggestwater guzzler of them all, here are some ideas to try first:

Check toilets, faucets and pipes forleaks. Even small drips can waste 20 or moregallons a day, while larger leaks may wastehundreds. Put a little food coloring in the toilet tank. If, without flushing, the color begins to appear in the bowl, there’s a leak

that should be repaired immediately. To getan idea of how much water you could belosing from leaks, check out the leak withadrip calculator.

Stop using the toilet as a wastebasket.Every time small bits of trash are flushed, five to seven gallons of water are wasted.

Put plastic bottles in the toilet tank. Putan inch or two of sand or pebbles into twoplastic soda bottles to weigh them down. Fillthem with water, and put them in the toilettank away from the operating mechanisms. The bottles displace water and may save 10 or more gallons of water a day in an average home.

Take shorter showers. Long showerscan waste five to 10 gallons every unneededminute.

Install water-saving shower heads orflow restrictors. They are very easy to install, but read all of the fine print on the packag-ing. Some low-flow faucets aren’t really low-flow. They should use 1.5 gallons perminute or less, and some use more. There

isn’t a difference in pressure in the low-flowshower heads, so the shower experiencecan be the same or better than otherwise.

Take baths. A bath in a partially filledtub uses less water than all but the shortestshowers.

Turn off the water while brushing your teeth. Keep a glass of water for mouthrinsing. Otherwise, theres no reason to keep the water going.

Rinse shaving razors in the sink. Fill the sink with a few inches of warm water instead of rinsing with running water.

There are easy things to do to savewater in other water-waster areas in thehouse, too, such as in the kitchen andlaundry:

Use the automatic dishwasher andwashing machines only for full loads. This reduces the number of uses.

Wash dishes by hand. Don’t leave thewater running for rinsing. Fill the sink withsoapy water for cleaning. Fill the other basinwith water for rinsing. If there's only onebasin, fill a pan full of hot water for rinsing.

Don’t let the faucet run while cleaning

vegetables. Rinse them in a pan of cleanwater instead.

Check the faucet and pipes for leaks: As with the bathroom, leaks waste water allday, every day.

If you have a yard, make sure to dosome research for the best ways to savewater outside for the appropriate climate ofthe area. According to the AWWA, on average,50 to 70 percent of home water is used forwatering lawns and gardens.

Pay attention to the weather to avoidunnecessary watering or water loss causedby the wind. Don’t water the pavementwhen a broom suffices. It's also best towater in the morning to prevent fungus andlosing water from evaporation. Differenttypes of grass and vegetation and usingmulch are also things to consider for conservation landscaping.

Taking small steps in water conserva-tion isn't hard. Eventually, we don’t noticewe’re using less. Make a conscious effort todo it, and over a period of time, it becomes a habit.

Do you want to get fit, save the environ-ment and feel like a kid again? It may be assimple as going from four wheels to two.

Biking is a great way to get exercisewhile saving the environment. Whetheryou’re going to work, the grocery or just outof the house, a bicycle can be a wonderfulalternative. And there is a pair of wheels foreveryone, no matter how old.

Bicycles aren’t going away, and we’regoing to see their usage increase as timegoes on.

De Leon says he has seen a lot of encouragement for bike riding. Cities are investing in new infrastructures to encourage people to ride bikes, and universities are trying to reduce the numbers of cars on their campuses. Someeven are offering free bicycles to those who don’t bring their cars to campus. It is a trend that has been popular for a long timein Europe, and now it's coming statesideonce more.

Culture finally is grasping onto thismore than a century-old technology of bicycles.

Whether you never have rode a bike orwant to get back on, there are many choicesavailable to make your shift back to biking afun one and selecting the right bike an easyprocess.

First, decide what you are going to dowith your bike and what you need it to do.Are you going to take back roads or stick tocity streets? Will you be going up and downhills? How far will you be riding it? Factoring

in usage will helpyou determinewhat type of bikeyou're looking for.

You can research online orvisit your local bikeshop to see whattypes of bikes areavailable. If you arevisiting a bike shop, talk to one of theemployees. The employees will be well-versed in all the different types of bicycles and will make recommendations based on what you needyour bicycle to do, from what type of material you should have your bike madeout of to whether a women’s bike is rightfor your body type.

If you want to get your bike on sale at a shop, usually the fall is a safe bet, accordingto Bicycling magazine. As the riding seasonends, new models of bicycles will be introduced, and the older models will be discounted. Last year’s bikes most likely will be as good as the new bikes they are introducing – as long as there are no dramatic redesigns for a particular model.

Wearing a helmet may be the law inmany states for people younger than 18, butfor adults riding a bike, it's a good idea towear one, too. It protects your head whilebiking, especially if you take a nasty fall. Also, if you plan to ride at night, you may want to consider

reflective strips for your clothing and a lightfor your bicycle.

Depending on what type of biking youplan to do, there is other protective gear, such as gloves for blistering and specialclothes to wear during biking trips.

There are plenty of accessories available for your bike beyond the bell and frilly basket from when you were a kid. Packs that fit over the back wheel are perfect for when you want to carry groceries home, and there are trailers thatyou can attach to pull younger kids alongwith you for a bike ride.

For the kids who are old enough to ride themselves, there are plenty of bikes for them, and you will be able to join themon weekend bike rides and other family outings. It will help establish the habit whilethey’re young, and your children can do itfor as long as they want.

It’s truly an activity that can be donefor your entire life.

COOKING UP A DISTRACTION

Anaheim Hills Look 23

Keep your guests occupied while you’re in the kitchenThe smell of freshly roasted turkey stillwafts through the kitchen as you carefullypipe a line of mashed potatoes around theedge of the green bean and mushroomcasserole. The glazed carrots shimmer in abuttery sauce, anticipating a dusting offresh parsley, and a bowl of whole cranber-ries – cooked and chilled to perfection –awaits a wreath of wafer-thin orange slices.

It’s fun to add those last-minute personal touches to what you’ve preparedfor Christmas dinner. But if you don’t wanthelp or to be interrupted as you go aboutcompleting your culinary masterpieces, experts say you should plan some activitiesin advance to keep your guests occupiedand out of the kitchen until dinner isserved.

Playing guessing games is one way.“Guess What I’m Thinking” is a simple talking/connecting game, one that adults and children can play together.

Someone in the group starts by saying,“I’m thinking of my favorite food (or coloror animal or sport). Who can guess whatI’m thinking?” Then each person takes aturn guessing. Whoever gets it right becomes the ‘Guess What I’m Thinking’leader in the next round.

This game engages everyone and

also helps people learn more about one another. Children love simple guessinggames, but it’s also fun for adults. If it’s onlyadults playing, you can broaden the topicsto a favorite movie, band or book and givethe genre as a hint.

Lots of other games also can make forsuitable pre-dinner diversions, includingholiday trivia contests, doing Christmas jigsaw puzzles and playing Christmas cardgames. Holiday DVDs and Blu-ray discs andseasonal television programs are also goodchoices. If the weather cooperates, yourguests may want to arrive a bit early and gocaroling around the neighborhood beforesitting down to eat.

If your guests will include children oradults with disabilities, do some researchbefore the gathering. Don’t be afraid to ask about food allergies or preparation, seating and activities that might be toonoisy or overstimulating.

Questions will be appreciated by thefamily, but you will need to be “sensitiveand tactful.” Before asking questions, letyour guests know that you want them tobe a part of the holiday gathering and that you want to know what is most comfortable for them and their family,Barkin says. Planning ahead of time is key.

You can keep guests from being underfoot in the kitchen by appealing to their stomachs.

A chocolate fountain set up on the living room console could be a pre-dinner crowd pleaser, as will somelight and fresh appetizers, such as grilledshrimp that’s accompanied by a ponzumarinade. “This can be grilled and thenserved cold or at room temperature. Also a cheese platter, one “with little signs thatturn people on to various new cheeses”that also includes fresh fruits – such as ap-ples, Concord grapes and Asian pears.

Make the appetizer table beautiful by sticking to a limited color palette. Thiswill really make a statement. You can also add interest by displaying your food at different heights. But whatever you do,don’t overdo. Serving too many appetizersbeforehand could spoil Christmas dinner, traditionally a large meal. You actually want people to be a bit hungry.

What if your guests insist on helpingwith those final touches? Get them to help set the table, fold napkins, put onmusic, pour the wine, get the water glasses full with ice, and get out servingutensils. If all else fails, put a drink in their hands, and tell them to RELAX be-cause you have it under control.

Let’s face it. On Christmas morning, most of us are thinking of one thing; wecan’t wait to see what Santa put in ourstockings and under the tree.

But we’re also usually famished andcan’t wait to see what Mama Claus hascooked up in the kitchen, either. However,Mrs. Santa usually has her mind on otherthings come Christmas morning. So here aresome easy ways to satisfy those early risersand still have time to enjoy those special holiday moments with your friends and family.

First of all, setting up a buffet forbrunch is one of the best things you can doon Christmas Day when you don’t know

whether Aunt Sally may sleep in or your 3-year-old niece will be running up anddown the halls at the crack of dawn. In otherwords, it’s best just to set up a breakfast “bar” in the kitchen and let everyone helpthemselves whenever they feel like it.There’s always the microwave to warm up a late-morning snack.

Brunch is a tradition at many homesbecause often parents and grandparents live nearby and arrive before noon, givingfamilies plenty of time to open their ownpresents and spend some time getting readyfor the rest of the day. Brunch menus havechanged through the years, but there aresome definite long time favorites.

Start with a “percolator” punch brewingin a 40-cup Farberware coffeepot. All the ingredients can go in the night before –

1 part pineapple juice, 2 parts cranberryjuice and apple juice, with plenty of brownsugar and spices in the coffee basket – andthat cinnamon-clove “Christmas” smell is“percolating” through the house even whenthe mice are not stirring yet. The fixings forBloody Marys and mimosas are always niceto have for “do-it-yourselfers.”

Then, always have a special casserolethat can be prepared the night before orfrozen. The sausage-egg casserole is a traditional brunch favorite, but here is agreat recipe for a blueberry French toastcasserole that is even better. Specialty storesalso have many different kinds of bite-sizedquiches that are available.

Another favorite: a big bowl brimmingwith fresh fruit that is easy to assemble. I just

and empty it into a festive cut-crystal bowl.Add a smaller bowl of vanilla yogurt sprinkled with cinnamon and you’ve got instant Christmas.

Also, don’t hesitate to serve store-bought baked goodies for a Christmas Daybrunch – or at any other time during thehectic holidays. We all may have special favorites that only Grandma can make, butthis is not a time to be cooped up in thekitchen when everyone else is hitting theeggnog. a great go-to place is Williams-Sonoma for all kinds of pre-prepared treats, especially for holiday brunches. Oprah Win-frey made their handmade croissants famouswhen she featured them on one of her “Favorite Things” shows, and because theyare shipped overnight, you can be guaranteed of their freshness. You also can check out your local bakeries and specialty shops for more pre-made treats toeither freeze or buy fresh the day before. There are lots of muffins, coffeecakes, strudels and scones that you can pick up tohave on hand for a holiday breakfast.

Try to order a special Southern-bakedham from a local barbecue place that is famous for its sugary, bourbon-soaked meatsthat are spiral-cut and ready to serve. You caneither heat this up Christmas morning orenjoy it straight from the refrigerator fordays in sandwiches. Place a grainy countrymustard in a side dish, and serve the hamslices with bakery rolls. For smaller crowds, substitute store-bought sausage-cheese bitesheated up in the oven with the casserole. Or simply wrap cocktail “smokies” with crescent rolls and bake for a quick treat.

You easily can make holiday sweet-breads ahead of time, too. There are lots of packaged mixes available that make whipping these up for the freezer fast andeasy. One of my favorite ways to dress up a store-bought pumpkin bread mix is to add a cup of mini chocolate chips to therecipe before it goes into the oven. Theseloaves make great holiday presents, too. Just wrap them up in festive holiday cellophane, and tie them up with curly ribbon.

OVERNIGHT BLUEBERRY FRENCH TOAST

Servings: 81 baguette or loaf of bread, sliced 1-inchthick6 eggs3 cups milk1 cup brown sugar, packedVanilla and nutmeg, to taste1/4 cup chopped pecans2 cups fresh blueberriesOptional: maple syrup

Arrange baguette slices in a lightlygreased13-by-9-inch baking dish, and setaside. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, 3/4 cup brown sugar, vanilla and nut-meg. Pour mixture evenly over baguetteslices. Cover and chill overnight. Just before baking, sprinkle remaining brown sugar, pecans and blueberries over top. Bake uncovered at 350 F for 30 minutes, or until golden brown and bubbly. Serve withmaple syrup if desired.

Mmmmmm...Simply delicious!

Tred of humdrum ham and traditionalturkey? Spice it up this season with international flavors that add a kick toChristmas dinner.

People have been leaning toward big-ger and bolder flavors – more spice, morearomatics, more nuances.

Both turkey and ham are very adaptableto almost any style, from American or Asianto Latin or Indian, so being creative withthem is very easy.

It’s the day you’ve been dreaming ofsince you were a child. The dress is probablythe most expensive one you’ve ever ownedand your family will be looking at the photographs for generations.

Your wedding day is not the time toskimp on the extras that can help you look

as beautiful as you can possibly be. After finding your dream bridal gown,

lingerie store, as you are building a foundation for your gown. Highly embel-lished, voluminous or heavier gowns requirea more supportive base to carry the dress.

Since wedding gowns can be quiteheavy, bridal lingerie is built to support yourform beneath the weight of the gown. It’sconstructed to shape and slim your bodyand features strategic boning, seaming andenhancement that everyday lingerie lacks.

The bra is the most essential piece. Fora heavy gown, a long-line structured bra isyour best bet. A bandeau style that will workwell with halter top or strapless dresses isalso budget-friendly, as it will work wellunder special-occasion dresses or businessattire when the wedding is just a happymemory.

Brides have specific and challengingneeds. There’s not as much lace embellishment as there used to be, and dresses aremore form-fitting, streamlined and made ofbody-hugging stretch fabrics. The brideneeds smooth underpinnings to make sure

everything fits neatly beneath the weddinggown. She needs invisibility.Strapless andhalter top gowns that are popular now require special attention.

Without the dimensional stability ofstraps, cups can splay east and west. Youwant to uplift and center her bustline withinher body frame.

If the rest of your figure isn’t perfect –and whose is? – a torsolette, merry widowor bustier can provide supportive boning tosmooth a larger midsection all the waydown to the hips and accentuate the bust.Spandex shapewear helps mold curves, minimize problem areas and create a graceful silhouette – ideal if you’ve chosen a trumpet- or mermaid-style gown that requires a seamless look underneath. Investin a good pair of pantyhose that will helpslim and shape your bottom and be sturdyenough to last through a night of dancing.

The right garments are uplifting andpromote good posture and make you feeltaller and thinner.

If your dress has a full skirt, a slip willbe another consideration. Styles are available

to complement and contribute volume for every design from slightly flared to ball-gown bouffant. Look for petticoats fittedwith a band to minimize the midsection. Those that can be adjusted for slits in thefront, back or sides of your gown.

Experts advise scheduling a fitting forlingerie as soon as you have selected thedress. Bring it with you. Comfort and confidence are of utmost importance. If anything bunches, scratches or pinches, this will give you time to have it repaired or make another choice.

You don’t want to be uncomfortableand fidgety on your wedding day.

While you’re there, pick up the traditional garter. Buy two -- one to toss atthe reception and one to keep.

And don’t forget your attendants. Havean event where you can bring in your entirebridal party to be fitted while they sip onchampagne and munch on cake.

There are all shapes and sizes in a wedding party and this is a way to makeeveryone feel special, beautiful and proportionate.

When the time comes to remodel aroom, few projects will have the impact thatreplacing the floor can achieve. By changingthe color, pattern or material, the room transforms into something completely newand fresh. You’ll fall in love with your houseall over again -- if you do it right.

Some rooms need thoughtful considera-tion before you replace any surfaces. Wecommonly subject our kitchen floors toquite a beating. Not only is it a high-traffic

area, but it also has to endure the occasionalglass, plate, knife or even frying pan beingdropped on it, not to mention various foodand drink raining down. A busy kitchen willtake its toll on a floor over the years. Inmany homes it’s a main focal point, so having a tired-looking surface can detractfrom a home's beauty, not to mention itsvalue.

When the time comes for your replace-ment, you’ll have a lot of innovative new

materials to choose from. Stone will have anupscale flair, but it’s not the ideal choice forthe kitchen. Any dropped plate or glass willshatter to every corner of the room. It’s alsohard on the feet and unforgiving when achild takes a spill.

Eye-pleasing alternatives with a littlespring to their step include bamboo, cork

and a new material called corboo, a mixtureof cork and bamboo unveiled by US Floors

at a trade show in Las Vegas in February. Also vinyl has come a long way. It has a

light bounce to it, yet it has the look of tile, and if you get down on the floor it has thefeel of the real thing. And it’s a floatable-typefloor, meaning it doesn’t require a gluedown. It can be clicked in place. It even hasthe appearance of grout lines without reallyhaving grout.

Hard surfaces aren’t only found in thekitchen – they can be just about anywhere. An eco-friendly material suitable for a familyroom, exercise room or finished basement isleather, recycled from things like old car

seats, wallets and purses. They're ground upand applied to a backing material, usuallycork.

It has a pattern to it that looks like realleather. It’s relatively durable and cleans witha damp cloth.

Overharvesting of exotic hardwoodfrom tropical rainforests has made certaintypes of wood unavailable. The race is onamong companies developing methods tomake sustainable wood from North Americalook like it came from trees like Braziliancherry. Anderson Hardwood Floors has developed a line called Exotic Impressionsthat uses a natural process that mimics en-dangered hardwood with impressive results.

The carpet industry has also gotten intothe green game, rolling out new lines thatare made from recycled plastic water bottlesand even corn. SmartStrand by MohawkFlooring is made from liquefied corn that is hardened into carpet fibers, instead of the traditional nylon fiber.

Whether or not you’re into going green,Davis recommended that homeowners take

the time to consider their lifestyle beforethey make any flooring decisions.

A family with young children and petsliving in a house with a gravel drivewaytucked into the woods will track in dirt andother things no matter how hard they trynot to. They should look into flooring, whether it’s carpet or a hard surface, that ismore durable and comes with a strong, 20-year warranty. Choosing a pattern insteadof a solid color will help make tracked-indirt less noticeable. After all, who wants toclean the floor 10 times a day?

On the flip side, an empty-nester couple that sees much lighter traffic in their home can look for something more ornamental rather than a bullet-proof material with a warranty that will outlive them.

Those are the kind of issues that are really important to talk about when you’rebuying flooring so somebody can steer youin the right direction.

The recent roller-coaster ride of the stockmarket has left many investors stunned andaching, with many wondering whether it'ssafe to “get back in the water” of investing. After all, a lot of money has been lost in theplummet of many sectors, as you probablyhave heard on the news. Every day.

But while the negativity cloud still sitsupon us, an interesting thing is happening:The global stock markets are experiencing

upswings, and many market forecasters report that not only is the economy gettingbetter but also the recession is very close tobeing over. Led by gains in Asia and other markets, gross domestic products have stabilized, and equity markets are gaining; investor confidence is returning. Dependingon your confidence level, it very well couldbe time to get back in the water. Or dive infor the first time.

Some top-name funds boast higher-than-average gains right now, and investorsare looking again at where to entrust theirmoney, which begs the question: Do youwish to get on at a high-risk level or at a low-risk one?

The biggest lesson learned in this stomach-churning financial era is that you need to have a trustworthy adviser.

markets in modern history, but as history has shown, bull markets always follow bear markets. The advice that continues to expound, no matter where the economyis headed or what the stock market hasdone recently, is that investors need to focuson their financial goals before they make anyinvestment decision. All too often, investorsmake the wrong decisions because theytrusted their advisers. The fact is that mostadvisers are paid on commission, which continues to be the biggest risk investors un-knowingly face. Don’t trust your adviser; question him.

Ask the following questions:Give me three reasons why this

investment makes sense. How does this investment fit into my

overall strategy? At what point will we sell this

investment? What are your fees, your compensation

and your expenses associated with this? What should I consider besides this

investment?

Meet with fee-only or hourly financialplanners who can do the heavy lifting andserve in a fiduciary role with no conflicts ofinterest. These advisers can look at your fullfinancial picture – your age, cost of living, retirement goals and true risk tolerance inan unpredictable market – and advise from a place of authority.

If you're saving for a goal that is morethan five years out -- such as retirement orcollege – it makes sense to invest more ofyour savings in stocks because they offer potentially greater returns over time. However, looking at the volatility of the2007 and 2008 markets, where losses weregreat, it makes sense to diversify in high- and low-risk categories. It makes sense tooffset risks by adding in some bonds andsome cash so that if the market goes downagain, you won’t lose that much. If you’vegot a time horizon of less than five years and are nervous about the market and risk-averse, put a high percentage of yoursavings in bonds and cash. You won’t gain as much, but you’ll have more peace of mind.

Certificates of deposit count in this category, even though CD interest rates arepretty low. “Still, there is nothing safer thancertificates of deposit, savings accounts ormoney market accounts at a government-in-sured bank, savings and loan or credit union.Just realize that you have to save money tomake up the difference of not having higherreturns from stocks.

If you can take more risks, devote ahigher percentage of your investmentmoney to equities, and consider emergingand international markets. To be a smart investor, you must provide your own education on the world economy and the future of investments. What’s hot in thenews right now is old news, and investorswho will make money in those markets invested a long time ago. So think ahead;subscribe to financial magazines, such asWorth and SmartMoney, and invest the timeto find a top-quality, experienced financialconsultant who sees you as a person withgoals, not just a number on a quota sheet.
