NESDIS FY 2010 Activities
• NOAA’s Joint Polar Satellite System
o NOAA/NASA Program Office formed at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center
o JPSS 1: NPP clone; JPSS 2: Competitively bid
o JPSS core satellite for VIIRS, CrIS , ATMS, OMPS and CERES/ERBS and direct readout
o AMSR data from GCOM under negotiation with JAXA
o Accommodations for SARSAT, ACDS, TSIS via free flyer or rideshare
o Shared Ground system
• Department of Defense – Defense Weather Satellite System
o Two satellites, first launch 2018
o VIIRS, SEM and a microwave imager/sounder of at least legacy capability

NESDIS FY 2010 Activities
• GOES-P Launched on March 8, 2010
o Passed 5 months on-orbit testing and now in storage
• Repositioned GOES-12 in May 2010 as the GOES South America Satellite
o Moved to 60° West to cover all of South America
• Agreement signed for COSMIC-2 in May of 2010
• Signed MOU in June 2010 with EUMETSAT, CNES, and NASA to extend
Jason series satellite ocean altimetry measurements
o Jason-3 launch expected in 2013
• Embarked on program to expand GEONETCast Americas to Costa Rica, El
Salvador, and Mexico.
o 15 new stations will be installed

NESDIS FY 2010 Activities
• Contributed to a new U.S. National Space Policy: Two of the primary goals of the
policy are expanding international cooperation and improving space-based Earth and
Solar observation capabilities.
o Directs U.S. agencies to promote increased data sharing among nations and
adopting policies internationally that facilitate full, open, and timely access to
government environmental data.
o Makes NOAA responsible for civil operational environmental satellites in support
of weather forecasting, climate monitoring, ocean and coastal observations, and
space weather forecasting. NOAA will do this in coordination with NASA and
other appropriate agencies.
o Calls NOAA to transition mature research and development capabilities to long-
term operations.
o Calls upon NOAA to use international partnerships to advance its mission.
