Having been reminded about the deadline for a preface by the modern communication media we have at our disposal, I was gazing out of the window of my apartment over Drava River, a tributary of the Danube. An amazing view from a beautifully refurbished monastery which now houses a new religion: the arts. More precisely: Lutkovno gledališče Maribor, the puppet theatre where I am producing a guest performance. Now a 62 year old, I remembered my father’s words about me as a child: ‘He can’t do anything’
Looking out, I was proud of what I’d accomplished.
As the eleventh son of a butcher, all I had to do was keep my ears open to collect harsh cabaret texts. Realising that at the age of 48 she could easily have given birth to a mentally disabled child, my mother was able to say it so well: ‘I wish you’d been a Downs Syndrome child, because so and so has one and they have a lot more pleasure than we get from you’.
I was determined to provide generations after me with something other than thoughtless humiliation and scorn. Appreciation, comfort and sympathy. Show the loner that he isn’t alone, that he matters. Offer beauty, a different truth and a different world. It really felt like coming home when I started creating dance performances for children. And that’s how I want to continue.
Together with a brilliant team, each providing input using their own talents, past, orientation, convictions and doubts. That creates performances which we want to share with you.

about us Through their multi-layered performances and dance activities, dance company de Stilte aims to excite the imagination, stimulate children’s playful curiosity and encourage their artistic skills. By playing, children get to know their world with their heart and soul; they learn to position themselves in an overwhelming society. Play is the opposite of everyday routine: the child’s personal training ground. While playing, children meet the world on their terms and in their format.
Prospects De Stilte aims to present performances offering time and space to the audience’s imagination. Performances which take children seriously and present a new dance idiom which blends with the theme, the scenery and music. Reality is not imitated in the productions, but portrayed and stylised.
The company broadens its basis by entering into long-term relationships with composers/musicians, choreographers and an artistic think-tank with Jack Timmermans as its nestor. In coproduction with the International Stiltefestival, de Stilte offers a platform for talented choreographers who want to create work for children. We want to make a major contribution to the quality and image of youth dance within the field of performing arts in the Netherlands.
InternationalFor the fifth time in six years, de Stilte is the most widely travelled dance company of the Netherlands. In 2015, de Stilte presented 89 performances and 22 dance duets on international stages.

Ain’t misbehaving over 4s
Meal times seem to take for ever. The chaos, the mess, the noise. Eat a bit, get down from the table and then the kids have disappeared altogether. Gone! Hiding somewhere in the house. Fun and exciting for the kids, but very worrying for the parents. If they go after them, they get lost. In desperation, they leap into uncharted territory. The result is surprising.
Ain’t misbehaving is a dance performance in which parents have to be the smartest because they are the oldest. How young and old meet and exceed.

Bosch in bedover 8s
In close partnership, saxophone quartet Artvark and dance company de Stilte present a music theatre performance which brings to life the imagination of Hieronymus Bosch in sound and vision. Gorgeous dance, inspiring music and incredible events guarantee a sparkling theatre experience. In the hallucinatory reality of a hospital, where drugs produce dream images, life floats like a balloon between heaven and earth. Trees which fall out of the sky, a conga of angels, strange roommates, doctors, nurses and unexpected visitors. It is a colourful affair in which figments of the imagination and real events become indistinguishable. Surrealistic like the paintings of Hieronymus Bosch.
‘Music and dance mixes beautifully in a bright anaesthetic dream.’ – Theaterkrant
‘This is literally and figuratively a fabulous performance. Particularly the successful collaboration between multiple art disciplines, which organically melt together, stands out.’ – Brabants Dagblad

Flying Cowover 4s
Playtime is fun yet serious at the same time. Once you’re totally immersed, anything can happen. Flying on the wings of their imagination, two girls and a boy embark on a standoff. When there are three of you, who plays with whom? From among the rolling eggs, the shuffling old woman and the flying cow, a game of friendship, loneliness and solidarity emerges.
‘I saw the show today and I ADORED: best young audience dance show I have ever programmed: good quality of dance, funny, uplifting, rhythmic, inventive: awesome.’ – Theatre Jean Cocteau, Marie-France Montant

Lewis Carroll is a gentleman with dubious intentions. By masquerading in various animal guises, he seeks the favours of three lovely Alice’s. But the three girls were not born yesterday and the writer’s true intentions are laid bare. Off with his head the Queen would shout. Wake up Alice!

In the middle of a blue field with clouds, there’s a … well, what is it actually? Because no one knows what it is, we call it a bed, a mountain, a flat or anything else we think of. Like the fluttering of a butterfly, the stories emerge. A man and a woman appear. The man looks after the house, the woman looks after the man and the weather provides variety.De Stilte treats young and old to an imaginative story in an intimate environment. A tiny universe with dew, sun, wind, rain and snow is brought to life, in which the boundaries between audience and dancers gradually become blurred.
‘Light and playfull (…) The sympathetic thing about the approach of choreographers Jack Timmermans and Jack Gallagher is they don’t overly explain what’s going on and rightly presume young kids can handle some form of abstraction.’ – Theaterkrant

1-2s all ages
1-2s are dance duets performed on a floor measuring 3.5 x 3.5 metres with pupils surrounding it on three sides. Impinging on the spectator’s space, a confrontation unfolds between two dancers. What is displayed is experienced to double effect in the subsequent workshop.
In the season 2017/2018, we will be performing choreographies by among others Jack Timmermans, Gertien Bergstra and Femke Somerwil, Natalya Kasparova, Ives Thuwis and Lidia Wos.
‘With clearly defined boundaries yet respecting a child’s personal baggage, pupils were given space to truly be present. A real gift to experience for me as a teacher. By letting the pupils dance themselves, the performance was brought even more to life. A very good combination.’ – Marieke, teacher BS de Dromenvanger

3x3 all ages
We have already trialled the concept extensively in our International Stiltefestival: 3x3. Then it wasperformed in heritage locations in Breda, since last season we’re bringing it to school!
The recipe is the same: we challenge talented artists in dance and music to create a performance within a tight framework of 3x3 minutes, on a dance floor of 3x3 metres, featuring one dancer and one musician. Like the dance, the music is performed live. At the end, there is a short discussion and the children take part in the workshop to experience for themselves what they have seen.
In the 2017/2018 season, we see and hear a 3x3 by Elena Sgarbi/Yuri Landman and Orlando Mardenborough/Joël Botma. We present two new versions by among others choreographer Félix Duméril/musician Dyane Donck.
3x3 is a collaboration of de Stilte with Dans Brabant and Greenbag.
‘I think that different artistic disciplines combined have the power to enhance the qualities of one another.’ – Elena Sgarbi choreographer 3x3

education With dance as core component of the curriculum, we contribute to education in which children can grow to become versatile, creative, self-aware individuals. We do this with successful formats but prefer to develop custom-made ones.
