L.A.U.G.H Program Learning Activities Under Guidance of Home

NIGHTLY READING Students will be bringing home books for nightly reading as part of their LAUGH (Learning Activities Under the Guidance of Home) program. Please support your child with their reading by sharing these books at home. Your child has already been introduced to the texts being sent home and are encouraged to discuss the pictures and think about what is happening in the book. Praise your child’s attempts at reading the words and sharing their thinking. Sounding out the words and looking at the pictures for support, are both good strategies for effective readers. Once read, the title of the book needs to be recorded in the student diary provided and signed (on the day read). Books are to be returned to school the following day in the school satchel.

Get to Know You

We’ve been spending some

time each day to get to know

each other, celebrate what

makes us special and set

personal goals for the year.

We’ve even made a time capsule for the

year, and will revisit it in December to

see how we’ve grown and how our ideas

and goals have changed!

Life Education Van

our bodies needs (such as food, water, toilet-

ing breaks and cleaning). All of the students

were engaged and enjoyed the visit. It was a

great session for our first week of school.

CHAPLAINS’ CHAT

Welcome back everyone. This past holiday period has found the Primes with their heads in road maps and directories as we sought out addresses of family, friends and special events in foreign cities. We noted the formal structure of the city layout and how important that layout was for us to read the maps. They helped eased the frustration of finding new places and gave us ‘ visuals’ from which to navigate. All of which helped us to feel more comfortable in a new environment. It struck me that ‘ family life’ is much like a good map. The things the children learn in the family can help them navigate through school, sporting activities, family, relationships and the social scene with potential ‘new friends’. The structures we put in place at home; respecting each other, listening without judging, including others, taking care of our things, talking about our feelings, returning borrowed property, taking turns, apologizing and forgiving. These are part of the ‘plan’ or the ‘grid’ we put in place that will ensure our children get the best opportunity to navigate difficult terrain. I’ve just named a few here, but I wonder how your child’s map is shaping up? Enjoy your year here at Nilma. We certainly feel privileged to be part of your ‘kids’ formation and journey. Anne Prime

LAUGH @ NILMA The Learning Activities Under the Guidance of Home program (LAUGH) will begin next week on Monday. Each student in Year F-2 is required to borrow a game, play it at home with family and/or friends and then return it on the following Monday. Our process for overdue games is as such; if students have had a game for more than 2 weeks, a late slip will be given to the homegroup teacher who will place it in their diary to go home to parents. If students are unable to find game pieces or the whole game please send a note to the homegroup teacher explaining this so it can be followed up and a solution can be found. Thank you for your assistance in helping to keep this program running smoothly.

SCHOOL DIARY All students will receive a 2017 diary. These diaries will be used for daily communication between school and home. Students will receive their diary early next week. A huge THANK YOU to our sponsors; Andrew Black Plastering Services, Not Just Steam Cleaning, Warragul Forest & Gar-den, Curves & Kisses, In Season Hunting & Fishing, Select Office Supplies and Lean & Green Warragul for your generous support towards Nilma and our school diaries.
