A careful analysis on the chilling clues contained within Lord of the Flies by William Golding
The Lord of the Flies
What used to be a maternal sow that suckled piglets in the woody shadowshellip
Revealed the evilnessevilness inside every being
The Lord of the FliesGolding uses an unsuspecting mother a sow that did nothing but nurture her young to convey a sense of primordial savagery that all are susceptible to
Like the sow the boys themselves will degenerate into cruel and bestial beings characteristics of human kind that civilization had kept in check
The Lord of the FliesText Clues and Connotations
ldquoThe head remained there dim-eyed grinning faintly blood blackening between the teeth The half-shut eyes were dim with the infinite cynicism of adult liferdquo
ldquoThe tie which links mother and child is of such pure and immaculate strength as to be never violatedrdquo ~Washington Irving
Simon
bull An innately good character Simon represents morality and is seen as a Christ- like figure
bull Unlike Ralph and Jack who battle for leadership Simon possesses a unique sense of nature and righteousness His death again symbolizes Christ because he is brutally murdered It also deals with the idea that natural goodness and morality are shunned and destroyed in our world
bull The notion that Simon knew the ultimate truth about the beast also pertains to Christ in that both knew the truth and yet were unable to convey it before they were killed His conflict with the Lord of the Flies represents Christrsquos struggle with Satan
SimonldquoSoftly surrounded by a fringe of inquisitive bright creatures itself a silver shape beneath the steadfast constellations Simons dead body moved out toward the open seardquo (Golding 154)
The Idbull The id is the bottom of the icebergbull It is our unconscious mind which is not
easily reachable The id is displayed as our primitive side the side that is prominently seen in The Lord of the Flies
bull The first appearance of the id was when Jack and his hunters believed killing the pig was needed more than Ralphrsquos process of creating civilized society
bull In the end the id comes out when Ralph and his few followers confront Jackrsquos primitive tribe During this time Piggy is killed the conch is destroyed Sam and Eric are tortured and Ralph is chased about the island
bull Throughout these instances Jack represents the id since he is interpreted as pure evil He influenced the children to become wild and undomesticated with his authority the id was able to spread to each and every person
bull Jack is the id ndash the beast living in each and every one of us the uncivilized aspect of life
The Id
bull ldquoRalph too was fighting to get near to get a handful of that brown vulnerable flesh The desire to squeeze and hurt was over-masteringrdquo (Golding 114-115)
bull ldquoJack knowing this was a crisis charged too They met with a jolt and bounced apart Jack swung with his fist at Ralph and caught him on the ear Ralph hit Jack in the stomach and made him grunt Then they were facing each other panting and furious but unnerved by each otherrsquos ferocityrdquo (Golding 179)
Rogerbull Roger is the Devil in Lord of
the Flies He is the thirst for blood and brutality that all humans have but most suppress He symbolizes Jackrsquos hangmanhellip the bringer of death on the island
bull Starting out as one of the hunters Rogerrsquos role as Jackrsquos right-hand-man develops as both he and Jack use their power to appease their own personal desires
bull Roger also creates a sense of pure evil He only wants to kill or be killed His malcontent and negative nature make him a key character in this novel
RogerRoger advancedas one wielding a nameless authority
(Golding 166)
Roger with a sense of delirious abandonment leaned all his weight on the lever (Golding 180)
Conclusion
bull Every one of these objects of symbolism is essential to The Lord of the Flies Without the lord of the flies there would be nothing to create a before-and-after image of the ldquochangedrdquo boys Simon too is a must-have part of the novel Without his Jesus-like optimism and strange wisdom the story would have lacked a point to which the reader can reference for pure goodness to see the contrast it has with the evil on the island The id is probably one of the mostimportant and influential components in TLOTF It eventually consumes all of the surviving boys Lastly Roger is a perfect example of all of the evils of mankind unleashed With so much evil occurring on the island it is only natural that there be a character embodying evil

Conclusion
bull Every one of these objects of symbolism is essential to The Lord of the Flies Without the lord of the flies there would be nothing to create a before-and-after image of the ldquochangedrdquo boys Simon too is a must-have part of the novel Without his Jesus-like optimism and strange wisdom the story would have lacked a point to which the reader can reference for pure goodness to see the contrast it has with the evil on the island The id is probably one of the mostimportant and influential components in TLOTF It eventually consumes all of the surviving boys Lastly Roger is a perfect example of all of the evils of mankind unleashed With so much evil occurring on the island it is only natural that there be a character embodying evil
