Lord of the Flies

Lord of the Flies was published in 1954 by the English writer, William Golding. Golding wrote it while he was teaching school. It was not a great success at the time with 20 publishers rejecting it, but by the 1960s it was a bestselling novel. William Golding received a Nobel Prize for Literature in 1983. It resonates with implications far beyond the bounds of the small island and explores problems and questions universal to the human experience.

This particular novel is a group of young boys who are stranded on an island and left to survive on their own and govern themselves. Lord of the Flies is an allegory (a story with both a literal and a figurative or moral meaning). There are many interpretations that can be derived from this novel. Some people think it’s about the inherent evil of man, a psychological struggle, a religion, human nature, or the author’s feelings on war (the book was written during and after WWII, Golding was also part of the Navy), or possibly all of the above. **************************************************************************************************************
