Why Texas Needs I-69

Population and traffic growth

Texas grew by 4.3 million people between 2000 and 2010, an increase of 20.6%. The counties along theI-69 Texas system grew even more, by 23%, and have 8 million residents. Some count ies a long t he I - 69 sys tem had population increases over 50% from the 2000 to the 2010 Census. Ports along the Texas Gulf Coast and inland ports on the Texas-Mexico border anticipate a dramatic increase of cargo in the coming years.

During hurricane evacuations, an interstate would have more capacity and wider shoulders to accommodate evacuees and emergency personnel. One East Texas town, which is along the proposed I-69, lost out on a new ma nu fa c t u re r pa r t ly because it lacked interstate highway service. The manufacturer instead chose Tunica, Miss. which is located on a recently-completed sect ion of I-69.

R ick Pe r r y (seated), a Republican and the longest-serving gover nor i n Texas history, on Tuesday, July 16, was at The University of Texas-Pan American in Edinburg to participate in a bill-signing ceremony that will merge UT-Pan Amer ican and The University of Texas at Brownsville into one, Valley-wide higher education complex, complete with a four-y e a r U T m e d i c a l school, which will be built in the next few years. The legislation, Senate Bill 24 by Sen.

Senate Bil 24 was the top priority of the Edinburg City C o u n c i l a n d t h e Edinburg Economic D e v e l o p m e n t Corporation as par t of thei r successful 2013 state legislative agenda. The measure included the entire Rio Grande Valley state legislative delegation as joint authors and joint sponsors.

TxCDBGThe City of Los Fresnos will hold a workshop open to the public at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 1st, 2013, at 200 N. Brazil, Los Fresnos, Texas, in order to gather information for its Texas Community Development Block Grant program (TxCDBG) Planning and Capacity Building Fund Contract No. 712044. The City encourages citizens to attend this workshop. The goal of the meeting is to record public input on the City’s vision for its future. Discussion will include identifying challenges faced by the City, prioritizing desired projects; and defining the City’s character. Persons with disabilities wishing to attend this meeting should contact the City at (956) 233-5768 so that appropriate arrangements can be made.

Our “Dig into Reading” summer program was a huge success. During the program, a total of 790 books were read. We are proud to say that the children did an awesome job!

Reading is crucial especially during the summer months when students are not attending classes; we thank the parents of these children for supporting and encouraging them to read during our summer reading program.

In total, 67 miles of Rio Grande Valley roadways will now be marked with I-69 interstate highway signs. A 53-mile stretch of US 77 will now be designated as I-69E from the junction of Business 77 north of Raymondville to just north of the U.S./Mexico border. A 14-mile length of US 281 will be designated as I-69C from the junction of FM 2812 in Edinburg to US 83 in Pharr.
