Every year, since 1976, at English School Los Olivos, there has been a summer fair where children can have fun and play lots of different games and even buy some food. More important than this, this year, the Los OIivos summer fair has raised money for poor people in India working with the charity Sonrisas de Bombay. In this article we are going to explain how this fair works. First of all there are lots of games, which include every single child to have as much fun as possible. Some of the games are even challenging, to prove how good you are doing different activities. For instance, this might indicate what the children might work at in the future.

The fair organizer, Elena Paniagua, said yesterday some words about this fair:`` We are giving the money to a charity called Sonrisas de Bombay. We have been doing this fair for about twenty years and we are really proud of it, if everything is all right, we will do things for lots of years after, even if there is an economic crisis. There are minimum of 12 activities: books, white elephant stalls and I’m selling plants so children can learn how to plant and to make plants grow. Each plant costs more or less 1,25€ depending on which type of plant it is and on it’s height. We can get up to 2000 euros per year, more or less. The economic crisis makes us get less money because parents don’t let their children spend more money.” In conclusion, we all think that the summer fair is a good source of giving money to the poor children in India. We will be proud of doing these fair lots of years more for two reasons: To make children have fun and to make the poor people have a better life. Organiser, Elena Paniagua (right)

Coeliac Awareness Day Several students at Los Olivos suffer from Coeliac disease. It is caused by a reaction to gluten found in wheat, and similar cereals. Our school, together with the Valencia Coeliac Society, collaborated to raise awareness of this increasingly common illness. Carlos Masquefa and Carla Tomás report.

Thanks to Pilar Marín, the person responsible for the school dining-room, we all made sure that the event was successful and productive. She said: ``I was very pleased to help this magnificent campaign and I am satisfied because all the students helped us.´´ The meal consisted of cubana rice, sausages and gluten-free bread. We had a great time collaborating and helping Pili, the rest of the teachers and the Coeliac Association and we learned how strange but tasty this gluten-free food is. For Los Olivos this was a great experience and we hope e can continue to raise awareness for this Association. By Carlos Masquefa and Carla Tomás

We celebrated an official day for coeliac children. In Los Olivos we ate food without gluten to promote awareness of this disease. The Valencia Coeliac association, which our school is a member of, informed us that 27th May is National Coeliac Awareness day. For this reason they have begun a campaign in schools to eliminate barriers and to show how simple it can be to adapt to a gluten-free diet. In school we have collaborated in the campaign. We made the school lunch free from gluten for everyone. The menu was exactly the same but all the ingredients used will be apt for coeliacs.

Destination Benagéber: Year 7 and 8 enjoyed three days of fun and games at the summer term camp. By Jose Enrique Aroca, Adrián Beberide and Gonzalo Bañó.

Day 1 Today everyone was excited because

finally the day had arrived, the day when we were going to say goodbye to our parents. We were going camping to The Benagéber Reservoir! We had great fun because until now, we have done some spectacular activities like eurobungy. In this activity we were very excited because it was like “Flying up in the sky”. We could also see the fabulous views up there: we felt as if we were birds.

The other activity we have done today

was tirolina, this one was very exciting, we were as quick as the light coming down the mountain. This day was also special because it was the birthday of one of the class, Adrian. He was very happy that day because everyone was friendly with him. Everyone bought sweets and, moreover, that day, Adrian gave everyone a pack of sweets. These tasted delicious. Apart from the amazing activities we also had a lot of time for resting and in that time we bought a lot of sweets, talked with our friends and we also played a lot of games. We enjoyed this camp a lot and we did not want to leave this camp.

!

Day 2

Today we woke up at 8:30. Then, we had a delicious breakfast, with muffins, biscuits, toasts and chocolate milk. After having breakfast, we went into our bedrooms and we got prepared for canoeing. We needed to bring a swimsuit, flip-flops and a bag with a change of clothes and a towel. After preparing for the activity, we had some time to relax. At 11:00 we got into a double-decker bus and we drove to the shore of the Benagéber reservoir. Once we arrived there, the monitors gave us each a life vest and a paddle. After practising how to paddle, we had to get into pairs and each pair was assigned a different canoe. We untied the boats and we played to splash each other. We had a great time, despite the fact that the water was freezing cold. We returned to camp and got changed. The next activity was abseiling, which is to descend a vertical wall with the help of some ropes. It was a bit frightening, and we were all feeling very nervous. After we had done the activity we felt very proud of ourselves. After completing these two activities, we went for lunch.

Page 12: Los Olivos Magazine June 2012

12

Day 2 (continued…) We had a delicious lunch, and after having some free time, we went hiking. This activity was very tiring, as the sun was high up in the sky and there were no clouds. It took us more than two hours, but everyone had a great time! The monitors told us the story of Benagéber reservoir, and we found it very interesting. After having a deserved rest and drinking some water, we went for dinner, which was quite nice. Then, as it was the last night, we went to the disco, it was absolutely amazing. Everyone danced, and it was awesome!

Day 3

Today, it was the last day for us in Benagéber Camp. We woke up at the same time that as yesterday. After waking up we got dressed and we waited to go to breakfast. At 9:15 am we entered the dining room for breakfast and we sat in our normal seats of the dining room. There were delicious biscuits and unique milk with Cola Cao.

After breakfast we did some activities. Today’s activities were archery and kangoojumps, we enjoyed them a lot. In archery we had played girls against boys and the boys had win. After this, we did kangoojumps this was very funny, because kangoojumps are special boots, they had very bid and large coils in the bottom so you could jump higher than normal. With these we had did some games. Finally, after these two activities we went to eat. The food was wonderful and exquisite, when we had finish eating we had went to our room to get ours bags and immediately we went to our school bus and we reluctantly went back to school.

We at Los Olivos have been working with a charity named “Caritas”.

Caritas is a charity that collects food from people who offer it to people who need it. The students in Los Olivos were divided into different groups and each group donated different types of food. We collected about 350 kilograms of food.

The main reason why we have been donating food to Cáritas is because the mother of an ex-los Olivos student, who has been working with “Cáritas” in Paterna for quite a long time, has received the information regarding a programme to help feed several families in Paterna and has asked us if we wanted to help. The project involves 15 families but currently there are about 60 families who have been involved. This food is distributed periodically to the families involved. Furthermore, other schools who have been collaborating say that this programme has been extremely successful.

Out teachers have been explaining to us why our school is collaborating and now we are very pleased to have donated food to the families who need our help. In times of economic crisis, it is important to help those who need it most.

250 Kilos for Cáritas The students of Los Olivos collected food parcels for families in need in Paterna.

SOLVING A MYSTERY Year 8 have studied DETECTIVE STORIES and how to write with a sense of mystery and tension. Itxaso Picassari and Ana Minguet have created very intriguing openings to their stories.

The Odd Man by Itxaso Picassari

There was a lot of rejoicing in the police station because they had just closed an important case. Suddenly a message appeared on the computer screen of a 29 year old detective. Simon was the technical officer responsible for the complex computer system at the police station in the center of the busy “New Town”. Simon was an odd-looking man. His pale skin contrasted with his big dark eyes. His long, dark fringe fell over one side of his face and the rest of the hair was tied back. However he always wore a smart, black suit with a black rounded hat and he carried an old umbrella over his left hand. Simon was extremely careful in everything he did. He liked being in control of the situation, so he didn´t like chaos either at work or at home. He had a strange sense of humor, and laughed at jokes noone else found funny. However, the strangest thing he had was a twitch. Every time he looked up it seemed that he was winking at you. His office was the tidiest you´ve ever seen. Everything was in a particular place. The papers were piled up, the books were colour-coded. The laboratory was so clean that you could even see your reflection in the shiny metal table. At home, his tiny, cozy cottage was well organized. He lived on the outskirts of “New Town”, a village near “Old Ham”. Simon was a very truthful person who believed in justice from everyone. It didn´t matter to him if they were rich or poor, white or black, natives or foreigners. And he was about to find out that justice came at a very high price.

Page 17: Los Olivos Magazine June 2012

17

Mr.Greatchairs:

the Bizarre Detective by Ana Minguet There he was, sitting on his chair, looking at his computer with that peculiar face which characterized him. Those enormous eyes, which came out of his face, his red protruding nose, which looked like a tomato and that destroyed his mouth and irregular teeth, one missing, one not. It was a day to day routine for Mr.Greatchairs, going to his office in that strange city and sitting for 4 hours in that same old chair. It had to be that ancient, broken chair. He was very fussy about it. His office was extremely disorganized, papers were dispersed over the table, nothing was in alphabetical order, not even the books and a cup of coffee left there for 3 weeks. It didn´t look like a detective´s office. Every day, after working so hard, he went to a very curious bar, which was always deserted. He always asked for the same drink, that red tea with pineapple, lemon and a bit of orange. He was a lonely man, without friends or family. He lived in a tiny, but cozy house that was well organized, not like his office. His house was located on the outskirts of “Fondmy”, a village near Manchester. He was always waiting for a new case to investigate. And he went about his investigation in a particular way. He had no mercy for the criminals, it didn´t matter if they were old or young, tall or short. If they were criminals, he got them. And this next one would be caught too. By Ana Minguet

Sol Ros, in year8, discusses whether T.V is such a good thing for children

It is a well known fact that the average six-year-old will have already watched television for nearly one full year. Television, which has become more and more addictive, has influenced lots of children. I believe that watching T.V has advantages as well as disadvantages. An argument in support of this is that watching T.V is relaxing and entertaining. If you watch different documentaries you will learn new things and, moreover, comedy or sport programmes may relax you. By watching T.V, you can learn foreign languages and watch the news from all over the world. General knowledge quizzes can also be, in some way, educational for children. It has been proved by experts that television can be inspirational and motivating. However, there are also those who believe that T.V can be dangerous. It is true that T.V can cause ‘ADHD’, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. This is a side effect that can be very dangerous to children. T.V can also cause anxiety and tension, cancer or even diabetes. Watching T.V can also affect your school level. T.V is becoming more addictive and children are being controlled because they tend to do crimes, as they see in T.V. It has been confirmed by experts at T.V that more tan a third of parents now prefer to watch television that talk to their own children. This is a type of side-effect you can get for watching an overdose of T.V and YOU have to prevent this! To sum up, I believe that watching T.V is generally a good idea; it’s educational and relaxing. Nevertheless, we have to consider the opinion of other people. T.V may cause serious diseases.
