6.3.2 Slab loads The slab load (kN/m 2 ) eonsists of a dead load g. and a live load Ps' The dead load on the slab consists ofits own weight and the weight ofthe flooring above. Dead load of the slab gs is calculated from: g, =t, x re + Flooring .......................................... (6.3) The floor covering (jlooring) is usually taken from 1.5 to 2.5 kN/m 2 depending on the used materials. The live loads Ps on the slab depend on the usage of the structure as given in Chapter l. In cases where the slab is supported on aH four sides and the ratio of length to width is larger than 2 (Fig. 6.3), the short direction ofthe slab is stiffer than the long one. In 8uch a case, the slab carries the load in its short direction and aets as a one-way slab. Accordingly, only the beams (AB and CD) of long spans support the loads from the slab.
