Author's Introduction

Any one familiar with my guides will know that Harvest Moon is my area of expertise. I do not pretend to be an expert in matters relating to Survival Kids or Lost in Blue. I wish I were because these games are amazing. They have much in common with Harvest Moon and yet are very different in other ways. The most fundamental difference is that you can die in Lost in Blue and its predecessors. In Harvest Moon, you are given (or buy) a derelict farm. Life is a struggle at the beginning but death never threatens you. In Lost in Blue, you are the victim of a shipwreck and find yourself cast ashore on a desert island. You discover another survivor. In the first Lost in Blue game, you had to play the boy first and complete the game successfully with him before you could play the girl. Lost in Blue 2 differs in that you can choose to play either the girl or the boy from the beginning. Furthermore, the girl is not half as helpless as she was in the original game. In the first version of Lost in Blue, when the boy finds the girl initially, he accidentally steps on her eyeglasses and breaks them. This makes the girl virtually blind. She is unable to go anywhere unless she holds the boy's hand! In Lost in Blue 2, if you play the boy, you actually can send the girl out to forage for firewood and food, something she never could have done in the original.

I am writing this guide for the beginner rather than the expert. Games like Lost in Blue and Harvest Moon can be rather daunting to players who are unfamiliar with them. Sometimes, they can be so difficult that they are not much fun to play. With a basic guide, however, the player can enjoy the game without feeling overwhelmed by it.

The experts may not like a guide with 'spoilers' but for the beginner, a walkthrough that gives some idea about the future provides the player with hope and incentive to continue.

There are a number of different successful endings to this game and there is a section that gives details about all possible endings. You basically can choose your ending by allowing the preliminary events for every ending to occur. There are specific requirements for succeeding in each scenario.

Please note that, although this guide is in the form of a walkthrough, there are some events that can be experienced in a different order and items often can be acquired sooner. The Table of Contents should help any player to organise his/her game to some extent, if he/she wishes to perform actions in a different order. Some events are predicated upon earlier events, however, and cannot be experienced at an earlier point in the game.

Essentially, your first mission in this game is simply to survive. You have no tools, no form of shelter and no food or water. If you do not find shelter, food and water, you both will die within a day or so. Fortunately, the problem of shelter is solved rather easily. There is a cave in the face of a rock wall to the north of the beach where you wash ashore. Water and freshwater fish can be found in a little alcove to the southeast of the cave. Until you find a stick, however, you will be unable to catch any fish. This limits your food supply on the first day to anything you can forage from the ground.

Format of this Guide

My Guides tend to follow one of two formats. My Harvest Moon Guides follow one format, giving information in sections that deal with specific aspects of the game, such as farming, mining and fishing, as well as sections that list the items sold at shops and so on. The other format is that used in my guide for Sims 2 for the DS. That format is more like a Walkthrough, and information about a specific aspect of the game is interspersed with 'Walkthrough' sections. This second format is the one I have followed in this guide. As new aspects of the game are introduced as the plot progresses, I include them in the guide after that section of the Walkthrough. For this reason, I have divided the Recipes into three separate Sections, giving the easiest Recipes earliest, the intermediate Recipes in a later section and finally giving the Recipes that require the rarest ingredients in a third Section. Each Recipe is given twice, however, as the Picturebook section will give every Recipe in the order in which it appears in the Recipe section of the Picturebook. For the player who wishes to read every Recipe at once, the Picturebook section will provide access to the complete list.

Basic Walkthrough

This first walkthrough is from the boy's game. It is easier to play as a boy, and it is suggested that you do so until you have completed the game once.

Shipwreck

The game begins on the ship. A storm is in progress. You have a choice to take something with you.

Search tabletopSearch suitcaseSearch closet

Despite these choices, I never have found anything on the ship.

You have to find the girl before you can do anything. Go to the right to find her. You then will be taught how to hold hands. As you walk with her, you will find seaweed on the shore. Pick it up with the stylus or by using the 'A' button. You can pick up items while holding hands with the girl. Go up the hill and the boy will eat the first mushroom he sees, a rather foolish mistake as it will make him ill.

Go the right to find the water to drink before you do anything else. The boy will discover fish there but you have no means by which to catch anything at this point.

If you are playing the boy, the girl automatically will find the cave now as the boy begins to feel the effects of the bad mushroom.

Received Tree Bark and Twigs from ???She is designated as ??? at this point because she has not introduced herself properly yet. The Tree Bark and Twigs have been given to you to allow you to make a fire.

How to Make Tools

Open the Make Tools Menu.

You will see only one tool option at this point. Each tool has an icon. The only icon now will be a Fire Starter. Make it. Choose Twigs and Bark and then press X or use the stylus to hit 'Make' to make the tool.

Making your first Fire

Once you have the Fire Starter, you can make your first primitive fire. Use the L and R controls to twirl the firestick back and forth. When smoke begins to rise from the bark, you will see a prompt urging you to blow on it. This is your cue to blow into the microphone. There is a gauge to the right of the screen. When it reaches the top, the fire will be started properly.

Build

When you build furniture, a different menu will open, displaying icons for each type of furniture that you can build. The 'Build' option only becomes available at specific locations, when the plot advances to a certain point. As previously stated, the first option that will be unlocked is the ability to build a larger shelf. When this is suggested, you must go to the northeast corner of the Cave in order to build. A long flat rock there will serve as your 'tool bench'.

Other locations where the 'Build' option will exist is when you reach a huge Tree in the Grasslands and one in the field south of Beach 4. When you realise that either of these Trees would make a wonderful place to build a Treehouse, the 'Build' option to make a Treehouse will open whenever you stand in front of the Tree in question.

There is one more item that you will be able to build at specific points in the game. When you emerge from the Swamp on the shore of the Lake for the first time, you will be given the option to build a Raft there. Later, after you glimpse a Ship from the Lookout Point, you will be given the option to build a second raft on Beach 4.

First Day in the Cave

When the fire has been started, you will have the option to speak to the girl to discover her name is Amy. Keep speaking to her until you have explored all options. When you ask her what you should do now, she will give you seaweed and coconut. You can use these to cook. The cooking stone is on the left wall of the cave. If you walk to the back of the cave, you will find a 'Shelf'. Store the firestarter here in order to clear your rucksack.

N.B. Once you have the option to 'Build', you will be able to make the shelf larger. There are three sizes. The largest shelf will hold 20 items.

Until you find your first stick, your only sources of food will be the items that you can forage. Along the beach, you should be able to find seaweed, clams and other shellfish on the first day.

Menu Options

Before you begin to cook, you may wish to use the 'Quicksave' option to save your game. The option will be found on the right side of the screen at the very bottom. The other options here are:

ItemRestMake ItemPicturebookQuickSave

Item

When you choose the 'Item' option, your rucksack will open. If you highlight an item, the actions available with respect to that item will appear. If it is edible, you will be able to choose to Eat it or Discard it. If it is a tool, you will be able to Equip it, Remove it or Discard it. If it is a Trap, you will be able to Use it or Discard it. You cannot use the Item menu to give items to your partner. You must use the 'Talk' option instead for any interaction with him/her.

Rest

The option to 'Rest' can be an important one. There are two ways to recover energy. One is by resting and one is by sleeping. If you stand on the Sleep area and press the 'A' button, you automatically will go to sleep. When you do this, you will have the option to Save your game. The day ends when you go to Sleep.

If you do not want to end your day but need to recover energy, you will choose the 'Rest' option instead. You then either can rest until your character automatically terminates the rest period, or you can press 'A' to resume your activities at any point. If you are alone, the 'Rest' option only will involve you. Even if your partner is with you, however, you are the only person who will be able to rest unless you choose the 'Go together' option first. If you are holding hands with your partner, you can hoose the 'Rest' option for both of you.

Often when you are with your partner, he/she will sit down, whether inside the cave or outside. Do not be deceived by this action into believing that he/she is resting! Energy will continue to drain from your partner unless you hold his/her hand and then choose the 'Rest' option.

Make Item

This option is the one you use whenever you wish to make a tool. In order to make a tool, all components for the tool must be in your rucksack. If they are on the Shelf, your partner's rucksack or the floor, you must transfer them into your own rucksack before you will be able to use them.

In your rucksack, all items that can be used to make the specific tool will be displayed with a lit background. Choose the items that you want to use, then press 'X' or tap 'Make' with your stylus. As you find new items, new tool options will appear.

Obviously, in terms of space conservation, it is better to make items into tools than to keep them in your rucksack as 'raw materials'. A spear made with a stick and sharpened stone takes up less space than the stone and the stick would. Bamboo and vines are the exception as you can stack them against the wall to be used in any future project.

Picturebook

The Picturebook is where the items that you have discovered or made will be collected. A brief description of the item and its uses will appear when an item is added to your Picturebook. The Picturebook contains all tools, weapons and raw materials that you have discovered or made. It contains all successful Recipes as well.

The different categories in the Piecturebook are as follows:

ToolsMaterialsFishAnimalsPlantsFurnitureRecipesOther

A complete list of all items in the Picturebook will be added to this guide as time permits.

Quicksave

The Quicksave option is particularly useful in any game that allows only a single save file. Although Lost in Blue 2 has two save slots, they cannot be used for the same game. There is only one way to keep two different save positions in any specific game, and that is by using the 'Quicksave' option.

The reason this gives you two separate save positions is that the 'Quicksave' can be used at any point during the day, but the 'Save' option appears only when you go to Sleep. You can save your game when you go to sleep but, if you do not like the results, return to the last Quicksave position instead. In the same fashion, you can Quicksave your game but, if something really negative occurs, you can go back to the 'Save' file instead, ignoring the last Quicksave position.

Having explored the Menu, it is time now to cook your first meal in the cave.

Cooking

When you stand next to the Cooking Stone, you will see an icon at the top right of the screen with the label 'Cook'. Tap this icon or press A now to open the Cooking Menu.

Select a cooking method

At this point in the game, you will have two methods:

CutGrill

As you collect specific items that will enable you to use other methods, those methods will become available. For now, you either can cut or grill your food.

All cooking methods involve the Touchscreen and use of the stylus. Each cooking method is a different mini-game. Some are more difficult than others.

When you cut food into a salad, you only need to use the stylus to slice vertically through each item placed on the cooking stone. When you have sliced through the last item, the dish will be finished. There is a time limit on all cooking methods.

When you grill food, all items will be cut and placed on the cooking stone. Each item is cut into two pieces; if you have four items, you will have eight pieces of food on the cooking stone. You need to use the stylus in a circling motion on each item to 'turn' it to the other side. When all pieces have been turned, the dish will be cooked.

Spices

You can cook up to four items at a time and use up to two spices with them. Spices improve the quality of your cooking, and better dishes raise your energy levels higher. To acquire spices, simply go outside and choose the 'Search' option by hitting it with your stylus or pressing the A button. Spices are random and can be found anywhere outside. The type of spice you find obviously depends upon the location. Rock salt is found only at the shore, When you have created a fishing rod and used it once, you will be able to find worms to use as bait in the same manner.

Recipes in this game are not created whenever you cook a dish successfully. Recipes are specific combinations of ingredients and spices, prepared in a specific fashion that are added to your Picturebook. At the start of the game, you probably will not be able to make any true Recipes but as you continue to acquire ingredients, spices and more cooking methods, you will begin to complete the Recipe section of the Picturebook.

The first true Recipe that you can make is Seaweed Salad. It requires Seaweed and 2 spices: Purple Bean and Blue Seed.

A number of basic Recipes are given in the Recipe section of this guide. The entire Picturebook, with a section that gives all Recipes in the game, is included in the Picturebook section at the end of the Guide.

Shaking Trees

It is on the second day when you will be able to find your first spice by searching on the ground. You will notice a coconut beneath a tree and be given a new option of shaking trees to dislodge coconuts, twigs, tree bark, sticks or leaves. The same items generally will fall from the same trees again and again. A tree that yields sticks usually will not yield twigs. You can distinguish between different kinds of trees by paying attention to the appearance of the trunk.

Feeding the Fire

The fire has to go out three times before you will have the inspiration to keep a stack of firewood handy. Once this occurs, your partner will take charge of the fire. You must make certain that there is firewood in the stack or the fire will go out. If you leave the cave alone, your partner should keep the fire alight. If you leave the cave with your partner, however, the fire will go out after a couple of hours.

Firemakers

Your first firemaker is made with a twig and a piece of bark. It requires a fair amount of effort to make a new fire using this method. As soon as you are able to make a bow, you will have the option to create a far better firemaker. Use your first bow to create the superior Firemaker. It will improve your life dramatically.

Lunch Box

The Lunch Box option will not become available on the first day. On the morning of the second day, you will see it when you open the cooking menu.

The Lunch Box is an important aspect of this game. Any perishable food item will rot in your rucksack if it is stored raw. Making a Lunch Box allows you to cook dishes to use at a later time. A Lunch Box takes up less space in your rucksack than four raw ingredients and it can be carried with you when you explore. You can leave a Lunch Box or two in the cave for your companion to eat while you are exploring.

Whenever you cook and do not choose the Lunch Box option, you will sit together to eat the food immediately. If only one person needs food, it is better to give that person a Lunch Box in order not to waste the energy given by the meal.

Interaction with Partner

You need to understand how and when to communicate with your partner. If you are holding hands, you will be unable to speak to her. You need to choose the option to 'Go separately', then stand in front of her to obtain the option to 'Talk'.

When you choose 'Talk', a menu will open with the following choices:

I have something for you.Could you do me a favour?Let's eat now.I'm going out.How are you doing?Nothing.

These options are important aspects of the game.

I have something for you...

If you choose: 'I have something for you', you will open another sub-menu with new prompts:

Give.Eat this.For you.It's nothing.

Give

The option to 'Give' is a two-way street. It can open either your rucksack or Amy's rucksack. If you highlight an item in your rucksack to 'give' to her, the item will go into her rucksack. If you choose the option to 'Switch', Amy's rucksack will open and you can highlight items there to place in your own rucksack. Whenever Amy goes out to find food or firewood for you, she will be able to give them to you automatically only if there are empty slots in your own rucksack. If not, they will remain in her rucksack until you choose the 'Give' option and then transfer them to your own.

Until you have the largest Shelf, Amy's rucksack will be your only other storage option. Whenever you go out alone to explore, you need to remember to transfer all unnecessary items to the shelf or to Amy's rucksack in order to free space in your own rucksack.

When you give an item to Amy, she will not eat it automatically. You can stash food and bottles of water in Amy's rucksack when you go out alone, but there is no guarantee that she will find or eat the food, even if she is starving! The description of some of the spears as 'not the sharpest tool in the shed' could be applied to Amy in terms of her intelligence and initiative. Her behaviour often can be extremely exasperating.

Eat this.

It is only when you choose 'Eat this' that Amy obediently will consume the item you give to her. If you intend to leave her alone in the cave for any length of time, it is best to satisfy her hunger and thirst before you leave rather than trusting her to use the supplies that you leave in the cave wisely.

For you.

The next option is 'For you'. This is the option to use whenever you have a special gift for her. The option to make 'Accessories' will be added to your Tool Making menu after you step on a shell at Beach 2. This option allows you to make shells that you have collected into pieces of jewelry. The aesthetic quality of the jewelry is not as significant as the fact of giving it to her. The 'Accessory' option allows you to string shells together and to polish them. Be careful when you polish, as shells can crack. If one shell cracks during polishing, the entire necklace will be lost. It may be a good idea to 'Quicksave' before you make any jewelry.

Whenever you give jewelry to Amy, you will make her happy and further your friendship with her. Look for shells as well as rock salt when you are at the beach. Beach 2 appears to have more shells to offer than Beach 1.

Later in the game, you will have the leisure to search for pretty stones as well.

Could you do me a favour?

The next option when you talk to Amy is 'Could you do me a favour?'

If you choose this option, another sub-menu will open:

I need something made. What are you working on now?Could you gather firewood?Could you go get some food? Can you go get some water?Nothing.

I need something made.

'I need something made' probably will be the option that you use most with Amy once you have established a daily routine. In emergencies, you can ask her to gather firewood or food, but her performance of these tasks is erratic at best. When she goes out to gather firewood, she may return early or late with a random number of twigs, from one to five. When she gathers food, she may bring back mushrooms that are poisonous. Obviously, the option to ask her to collect water will not become available until you have bottles or the oil drum. It is best not to ask her to perform any these tasks, however, unless your back is against the wall.

When you ask her to make something for her, however, she will perform the task properly. The grace with which she agrees may vary according to her mood or friendship level, but she will do the work in the time given to her.

Items she can make include baskets and rope. Place vines and bamboo in stacks against the northern wall, then ask her to make baskets or ropes. You can choose the number of items that you wish her to make and give her a time limit for completing the chore.

When the option to smoke meat or fish becomes available, this will be another task that you can request from her.

It is in this respect that furniture will become important, as when you are able to make a work table for her, it will increase her productivity. Details about furniture options will be given as they become available in the course of gameplay.

When your Partner gathers Firewood

When you request firewood from your partner, the amount of firewood that he/she brings back always will be random. It can be anything from 1 to 5 twigs. If you are desperate to replenish your stock of firewood, Quicksave your game BEFORE you ask your partner to gather firewood. If he/she returns with no more than a single bundle of Twigs, reload your game and try again.

When your Partner gathers Food

When you ask your partner to do a favour for you by gathering food, make certain that you both have sufficient space in your rucksacks for the items collected. Especially as the game progresses and you stay in the Treehouse in the Grasslands or the Beach 4 area, your partner may be able to bring back far more food than previously. If, however, neither you nor your partner have sufficient empty slots in your rucksacks to accommodate all the items, those that cannot be alloted a slot will be lost.

The items that Amy brings back when asked to do so always are random. There are times when it is very useful to ask Amy to gather food. If you are staying in a location far from an item that you need for a Recipe, there is a chance that Amy will bring it back in her rucksack. Quicksave your game BEFORE you ask her to gather food. If the item you need is not included when she returns, simply reload your game.

Although she may bring back useless poisonous mushrooms on occasion, your partner can bring back items that are troublesome for you to collect, such as those obtained only through diving. Even if your partner is the one to bring back an Abalone or Clam, by placing it in your own rucksack, you will be able to add it to your Picturebook. This is a minor 'cheat', but it can be helpful.

Day 2: Exploration

West of the cave is a series of steps leading upwards. Try to explore these as soon as possible. Take Amy with you. There is a log at the top of one of the steps that needs to be pushed in order to create a shortcut. You will not be able to push it by yourself. Whenever you see a huge log at the top of a step, you will know that it is a potential shortcut.

After you have pushed the log down the step, you will see an opening in the face of the rock wall. When you go through it, you will find a new area. A couple of trees are in the small area to the right or east of the river. Stepping stones lead to another area to the west. When you cross the river on the stepping stones, you will be able to find your first stick beneath one of the trees there. Sharpen the stick to make a fishing spear. You will be able to catch fish from the river or from the shore of the ocean.

Spears and Fishing

There are a number of different types of spears that can be made. In my own experience, although some last a little longer than others, there is no significant difference between a spear made simply by sharpening a stick or a spear made with a stick and a sharpened stone. It is fun to make different tools and you need to make every type of tool once in order to complete the Picturebook, but I have found that a sharpened stick is as good as any other spear at this stage in the game.

Events in Lost in Blue tend to occur when you find a specific item or reach a new geographical location. The sooner that you explore other areas, the easier survival will become as you find items that will allow you to make more nourishing meals.

Beach 2

There is another beach to the west of the trees where you find your first stick. This will be designated as Beach 2. More important than this beach, however, is another cave opening that is found by taking the grass steps at the western end of this second beach area. You need to go north along the high plateau and bear to the west. You will find that there are a number of 'fingers' of land on this high plateau. Take the one on the far left and you will find a huge boulder.

Try to take Amy with you when you explore this area so you will be able to push the boulder aside. If Amy is not with you, you will be obliged to make another trip with her before you will be able to explore the land beyond this boulder.

The Necklace Breaks

When you move the huge stone blocking the cave, Amy's necklace will break. There is a cave behind the huge boulder, but the game will take you directly back to your own cave home, not allowing you to explore. You then will be sent straight to bed. If you had been able to explore the cave, you would have found a pool of fresh water inside.

Accessory

The next morning, there will be a scene. Amy grieves over the broken necklace. You will make her a new one automatically and give it to her to replace the one that was broken. Accessory will be added to your options in terms of what you are able to make.

Although Amy now has a new necklace, you need to collect shells to make more necklaces for her if you wish to raise her friendship level. You will find your first shell at the beach and from that point onward, whenever you search in the sand, you will be able to find shells as well as rock salt.

Whenever you make a necklace, you need to choose shells to string, then polish. Be aware that shells can break in the process of polishing them. If one shell cracks, the entire necklace and all other shells in it will be lost.

When you do explore the new cave and go through to the other side, you will be in an area with access to a new beach and steps leading to a jungle.

Meeting the Wolf

You will confront your first predator in the grassy area outside the new cave. Whether or not you fight him, the result will be the same at this point. You will not be able to kill him for fur, meat and lard. You simply will chase him away. The next time you confront a wolf, however, you will be able to kill it.

Empty Bottles

When you go to Beach 2, you will find your first bottle. Empty bottles can be used to store fresh water. On the new beach, you will find scallops and oysters as well. These do not require that you dig for them. You simply collect them from the sand.

This new beach (what I will call the third beach area) is the place where the cruise ship can be found, half submerged in the water.

First Meeting with the Tiger

If you take the stairs towards the jungle area, you will confront a tiger. You will not be able to fight this tiger but will be forced to retrace your steps. Be patient. The jungle will become accessible soon.

When you return to the cave, you will tell Amy about the new area.

Tsunami

There may be a tsunami the next day. Afterwards, Amy may tell you that you can find new and unusual items after heavy storms. If you go to the beach below your cave home, you may find an iron rod and another bottle.

Cave 2: Water Source

There is a way to make a shortcut from the water cave. If you take Amy with you to the water cave, instead of returning by the beach route, when you exit the water cave, go south to the place where the land forks and this time take the second 'finger' of land that leads north. When you reach the steps, go east. You will find a log at the end of the path. Have Amy help you push it down. It now forms a step. If you use your map now, you will find the stepping stones that lead back to your cave home easily. Otherwise, simply go south, then keep going east whenever possible, making your way round the rock formations that prevent you from taking a direct path back to the stepping stones.

First Confrontation with an Alligator

The next morning, Amy will awaken and refuse breakfast. She then will run from the cave. You will find her in the area with the stepping stones being confronted by a huge alligator. You will fight this alligator now, using your stylus and the L and R buttons. If you did not fight the fox previously, this will be your first fight.

Equip a spear, then wait for the alligator to lunge. When it lunges, instantly use either the L or R button, then quickly use the stylus a couple of times to thrust at the alligator while it is at the side.Doing this three or four times will defeat the alligator and you will suffer no wounds, provided you step to the side each time. Incidentally, you can use the same direction button each time and the result will be the same. The alligator's attack never changes in that sense. As long as you step to one side, you will evade its snapping jaws.

Incidentally, this is the way to fight ANY animal with a spear or even your fists.

You will not be able to kill the beast but only chase it away. This is a good result, however, as Amy afterwards will suggest that the tiger no longer may be guarding the jungle and it would be good to begin to explore the jungle area.

Whenever you go on a long journey, you need to make a few lunchboxes to take with you. Using four ingredients will pack more energy into the lunchbox. I usually use three fish with a coconut or seaweed, although I believe that four fish gives a bit more energy.

Exploring the Jungle

Logs, Bamboo and Vines

The first time you go to the jungle, try to bring back at least one log and one vine. If you bring more than one, you soon will be able to make furniture. The logs and vines are found at the entrance of the jungle, so do not require much exploration. There is another very critical resource near the entrance to the jungle. If, instead of going deeper into the jungle, you go east (to the right) instead, then take the path south, you will find a stand of bamboo. Many pieces of green bamboo will be on the ground, and some bamboo shoots will be in the ground there as well. Bamboo shoots, like carrots and radishes and any other root vegetables, can conceal small snakes and tarantulas. Be careful!

If you can take at least one vine, one log and one piece of bamboo back to your home cave after the first visit to the jungle, Amy will make a number of suggestions.

Rope and Baskets

She will tell you that she can make rope from the vines. Rope will be added to the items she can make. She will tell you that she can use the bamboo to weave baskets for traps. Traps will be added to the items that can be made and a place to stack bamboo and vines will be created along the northern wall of your cave home.

The place where bamboo is stacked is the place for finished baskets as well. Vines and rope share the same location. Simply use the left and right direction arrows to cycle through the items stacked at any location. Use the up and down arrows to transfer items to and from the stack to your rucksack.

Making Furniture

A Larger Shelf: Shelf 2

If you brought a log back with you, you will suggest the idea of furniture. The rock shelf to the far right of the northern wall will become a place to 'build' furniture.

Amy will remark that a larger shelf would be useful. You now can build a larger shelf.

The materials needed to build all three sizes of shelf are as follows:

Shelf 1: 1 Log, 1 RopeShelf 2: 2 Logs, 2 RopesShelf 3: 3 Logs, 3 Ropes

The largest size of shelf will hold a total of 20 items.

Bed or Table?

After this, you will be given a choice:

Do you want to be able to get more sleep or save more energy?

Choose the sleep option if you wish to be able to make a bed.Choose the energy saving option if you wish to be able to make a table.

It is better to choose the sleep option first. Once you have made a bigger shelf and a bed, the option to make a table will be added automatically. When I chose the table option first, however, the option to make a bed was NOT added afterwards automatically. Even after I had upgraded the Table, the option was not added until some time had passed.

The materials needed to create a Bed are:

Bed 1: 2 Logs, 1 Rope, 6 LeavesBed 2: 2 Logs, 2 Ropes, 6 LeavesBed 3: 2 Logs, 3 Ropes, 6 Fur

Logs are found in the Jungle. Six logs can be found ordinarily. They will not reappear immediately after you gather them, but will appear after about 3 days. Ropes are made by your partner from the vines you find in the Jungle. Leaves are found beneath certain trees, or can be shaken from those trees if they are not on the ground. I find it easiest to obtain fur from the wolves that frequent the area between the Water Cave and the Jungle entrance (near the entrance to Beach 3).

The materials needed to create a Table set are:

Table 1: 1 Log, 2 RopesTable 2: 1 Log, 2 RopesTable 3: 2 Logs, 2 RopesTable 4: 2 Logs, 2 RopesTable 5: 2 Logs, 2 Ropes, 3 Furs

When you have completed Table 5, you will have a handsome set consisting of a Table and two chairs upholstered with fur. You then will be able to sit at dinner with your partner in formal fashion.

Making and Using Traps

If you wish to make a trap, the option will exist once you have found the bamboo and vines and Amy has made a basket. There are three kinds of trap: Large, Fish and Small.

A large trap is made with 1 stick and 1 vine. It is used to trap deer and other large animals. You can catch goats with this as well and keep them for milk. As in the case of the chicken, you first must kill a goat and bring the meat back to the cave before Amy will suggest that a goat could be domesticated and used for milk.

A fish trap is made with 1 vine and 1 basket. It will trap one fish. Fairly useless really, a waste of good items, but you need to make it once to complete your PictureBook.

A small trap is made with twigs and a basket. It will trap small animals, and allow you to domesticate a chicken once you have caught one and brought home the meat. This is the most useful trap at this stage in the game. One you 'use' it, you can search it again and again for small animals and birds. All you need to do is drag the animal into your rucksack (the dark 'pocket' at the bottom right of the Touchscreen) by using your stylus. You can fill an entire rucksack with meat doing this.

Animals caught in a small trap will be agitated and will try to escape as soon as the trap is lifted. Squirrels and field mice tend to run in circles but are fairly easy to catch. The Chicken, who will run in an erratic fashion, is not too difficult. The most difficult creatures to catch are the pigeon and the duck. You will see the Pigeon flying from side to side even before the trap is lifted. It will continue to fly close to the ground until you catch it or it manages to escape. The Duck, on the other hand, will not fly until the trap is lifted. It then will spread its wings and usually fly towards the bottom of the screen very quickly. It may be the most difficult creature to catch but it yields the most meat. Duck meat when smoked usually yields Medium Smoked Meat. Most of the other creatures caught in the Small Trap will yield only Small Smoked Meat.

A small trap, once placed, should last a few days. Return to use it the next day if you can and keep using it until it disappears.

You can use a small trap as close to your cave home as the area outside the entrance. You can place another trap in the little area with the stepping stones to the northeast of the cave. If you place one in either of these locations, you will be able to trap small animals without using too much energy.

If you wish to trap a large animal, there are a number of ways to do this, but the best way probably is to wait until you actually see an animal before you 'use' your trap. Large animals will be found in the same spot again and again. When you startle an Animal anywhere, note the precise location where the Animal stood before it ran away, then set a Large Trap there. In order to kill a large animal, you need to make a bow and arrows as well. Like spears, bows and arrows can be made from a number of different materials.

Bows and Arrows

A bow is made from either a stick or piece of bamboo and a vine. Arrows can be made in a number of different ways. You simply can sharpen a stick, piece of bamboo or iron rod to make a simple arrow, or you can attach a sharpened stone or bone to the shaft. For greater accuracy, use feathers as well. You need to make one of each type of arrow in order to complete the PictureBook but afterwards, the only significant difference is whether or not you have attached feathers to the arrow. Feathers do improve the accuracy.

Large animals can be found in a number of locations. In the early stages of the game, you will see them both in the jungle and in the grasslands. If you run when you explore these areas, you will startle any animal into fleeing before you have a chance to trap and kill it.

There are two strategies used by players to hunt large animals. My own strategy is the first one, but there are players who prefer the second.

Strategy 1: Pay attention to the precise location where you see any large Animal. Even if you startle it and it vanishes, set a Large Trap at the place where it stood. Animals are 'loaded' randomly onto the screen, but usually at one of a few specific spots. If you set traps at the places where you have seen Animals previously, the chances are extremely good that you will find an Animal in one of your traps.

As Animals are loaded onto the screen randomly, it may be a good idea to Quicksave your game BEFORE you enter the screen where your Traps are set. If you fail to find an animal in any of your traps, reload your game and try again. Quicksaving your game AFTER you enter the screen is not helpful, as the Animal either will or will not have been loaded onto the screen at that point. Using this method, I have been able to find a large animal in one of my traps almost every day.

Strategy 2: Move slowly and, once you have found a large animal, pay attention to the direction in which is it moving. Place the trap directly in front of its path, and it should walk into the trap. You can lay more than one trap in its path, but remember that once a trap is set, it cannot be moved and will not last more than a couple of days.

Note: The problem with Strategy 2 is that Animals often will be facing a cliff or a wall and you will be unable to set a Trap in front of them. Strategy 1 eliminates this problem. Moreover, setting two or three Traps at the same spot is rather a waste of Traps as only one will be used.

No matter which strategy you employ, when an animal is caught in a large trap, move as close to it as possible, then fire a series of arrows at it to kill it. One arrow will not kill a large animal. You must hit it at least two times in order to slay it. If you hit the animal, you will see a burst of light at the point of impact. This is where distance is significant. The further you stand from the Animal, the less chance you have of hitting it.

Tip: If you startle a large animal and it does not move into one of your traps but disappears instead (in that mysterious way in which they do in this game, vanishing as it were into thin air), press the Y button instantly and the animal will reappear on the screen. When this occurs, it usually will be extremely close to you, so be prepared to shoot immediately.

A Bow and Arrow is used in the following manner:

First, equip the Bow by accessing your 'Item' menu and using the 'Equip' option when you highlight the Bow. When you wish to use the Bow, press X to use it. It is only at this point that you will have access to a new screen. On this 'hunting screen', you will see the Animal at close range as well as being able to see your bow and the trajectory of the Arrow notched in the bowstring. This is the point at which you will have an opportunity to correct your aim. As previously stated, the closer you are to the Animal, the more chance you will have of hitting it. When an Animal is caught in a Large Trap, you will be able to walk up to it and almost stand on top of it! If you do this, you should have no trouble whatsoever.

Although the description of each arrow states that it can be used only once, it appears that any arrows that you make are not single arrows but consist of a couple of arrows. With only one bamboo feathered arrow in my 'quiver', I have been able to shoot a bamboo feathered arrow more than once to kill an Animal.

Hunting Wolves

The jungle and grasslands are a greater distance from the first cave home than the little grassy area directly outside the water cave, near Beach 3. If you set a small trap in this area, you will be able to use it to obtain a rucksack filled with meat and shellfish from the beach. Moreover, wolves tend to frequent this area, especially in the evening. A wolf when killed with a spear will yield three different items: meat, lard and fur.

The meat obviously can be cooked using any of the cooking methods available to you. Lard can be used either in cooking or to make a torch. Fur can be used to make a better bed.

In order to make a bed with fur, you need to upgrade your bed to the second level. The third level will use fur instead of leaves.

Fresh Fruits

The jungle contains many natural resources apart from those used to make better tools and furniture. Ripe fruits like pineapples, guavas, bread fruit, passion fruit, papaya and bananas abound.

The Grasslands

In the grasslands, you will find potatoes, radishes and burdock as well as numerous twigs and sticks. There is one more valuable item in the grasslands and you may wish to obtain it as quickly as possible.

Indented Stone: Cooking Bowl

When you exit the jungle going north, you will see a series of stepping stones that lead to the main area of the grasslands. When you cross the stepping stones, instead of going deeper into the grasslands, follow the river bank to the east. You will see a small beach where an indented rock will be half-buried in the sand. Once you dig up this rock and take it home, you will be able to use a larger number of cooking methods.

When you have brought the indented stone home to your cave, you will unlock the following cooking methods:

BoilSteam

If you have brought any lard back to your cave, you will have one more option:

Deep Fry

There is one more cooking method that you will unlock when you find a Flat Stone on the northern beach at the Lake. That method is:

Stir Fry

Each cooking method is a separate mini-game. To boil items, you must stir them in the large 'bowl' formed by the indented stone by using your stylus as a spoon. You must have some water in your rucksack as well if you wish to boil anything.

To steam items, you must blow on the microphone. Both boiling and steaming require water, and both therefore provide more nourishment in terms of water as well as food.

To deep fry your food, you need lard. The pieces of food are thrown into the oil in the cooking 'bowl' and assigned numbers. You must tap on them with your stylus in the correct numerical order to remove them.

The method you choose to use is partly simply a matter of personal preference, but I tend to favour the 'Steam' method as it provides great nourishment, taking care of thirst and hunger at the same time.

After you find the Flat Stone at the Beach on the northern shore of the Lake (south of the Ruins), you will obtain one more Cooking method:

Stir Fry

To stir fry your food, you only need to run the stylus in a jagged 'lightning bolt' configuration over the food on the flat stone. Do this repeatedly until all pieces are cooked.

Treehouse

If you walk northeast in the grasslands, you will find a series of grass steps. Climb them to find an enormous tree. When you approach the tree, you will be given the option to build a treehouse. There are seven levels of building that are needed to create a treehouse that you actually can use. You need to ask Amy to make as much rope as possible if you wish to create a second home here in the grasslands.

You need an enormous quantity of logs and ropes to build the treehouse, so you will need to plan ahead. Ask Amy whenever possible to make rope and collect logs for the project.

An indication of the quantities of materials required is that you need 4 logs and 4 ropes to build even the third stage of the treehouse.

Completing the Treehouse

Stage 1: 4 Logs, 4 RopesStage 2: 4 Logs, 4 RopesStage 3: 4 Logs, 4 RopesStage 4: 4 Logs, 4 RopesStage 5: 3 Logs, 3 RopesStage 6: 3 Logs, 3 RopesStage 7: 3 Logs, 3 Ropes, 10 leaves

When you have completed Stage 7 of the Treehouse, you will be able to enter and make it into a new home. Any furniture you have made will be transported instantly to any home that you enter. Go to bed at any home and when you awaken, your partner and your chicken will be there with you.

Weather in Lost in Blue

As you might imagine, weather is a very important consideration on a deserted island. Surrounded by water, it is useful to know that the tides are ruled by the phases of the moon. When the tide is low, you can dive from specific rocks on the Beach.

Rain has an effect on your energy level. When it is raining, any activities conducted outside will result in more fatigue than usual.

Even fine weather can have negative effects. When it is extremely hot, you will become dehydrated faster. Make certain to watch your water levels on very hot days.

When you speak to your partner to ask how he/she is, you will be given useful information about weather conditions and their effects.

Typhoons and Hurricanes

Typhoons or hurricanes are the most dramatic weather conditions that you will experience. When there is a severe storm, you will be able to go outside, but you will be limited in the distance you can travel. You will be forced to move within the radius of a few yards of your dwelling.

Actually, typhoons and hurricanes have positive as well as negative effects. During a severe storm, objects will be blown by the wind and dislodged from trees. Depending upon your location, you will be able to find different items on the ground during a typhoon or hurricane.

For example, if you are staying at the original cave, you will find many twigs and coconuts on the ground outside the cave. If you explore the grassy area between the water cave and the Jungle the day after a hurricane, you will find quite a few pieces of Green Bamboo on the ground there. This will make a trip to the stand of bamboo high in the mountains unnecessary.

If you are staying at the Treehouse near Beach 4, you will find a multitude of eggs, feathers, twigs, bark and sticks on the ground to the southeast during a severe storm. This is the best time to complete the Egg Recipes in the Picturebook as you will find almost a dozen eggs on the day of a severe storm.

N.B. When you have the capacity to make a Small Trap using Twigs and a Basket, you will discover a good way to spend the day of a Typhoon or Hurricane is by trapping animals. Although you cannot travel, you can go outside your home. Placing a Small Trap a few yards from your doorstep will allow you to spend the entire day trapping animals and birds. If you have a Smoker, you can fill that, make a number of Lunchboxes and prepare a couple of nourishing dishes for you and your partner to share at the table.

Oil Drum

After you experience your first tsunami, you should be able to find an item that will improve your domestic life greatly. You can find a metal oil drum at Beach 2, the beach where you saw your shipwrecked vessel. You will not find it, however, unless you pick up EVERY item on the beach. Even if you must discard some items, like extra seaweed and a stone, collect every item that is strewn along the shore, then leave the screen and return. The oil drum will be there.

The oil drum allows you to store 30 portions of water. Now, instead of being obliged to fill empty bottles each day, you can fill the bottles and dump the contents into the drum. Empty bottles henceforth will be useful only to water the chicken or goat and when exploring.

Choosing a Pet

In Lost in Blue 2, you can domesticate either a chicken or a goat. You can have one pet at a time. If you choose to domesticate a chicken when you catch it in a small trap, you never will be given the option to domesticate any goat caught in a large trap as long as the chicken is alive. When the chicken dies, you will be able to domesticate another pet. If you wish to have the opportunity to domesticate both animals, do not replace the first animal when it dies with an animal of the same type. It is rather unfortunate that the game will not allow your partner to domesticate both animals at the same time.

Caring for your Chicken

With respect to the chicken, it is important to give it water. If you stand next to it, you will see the option to 'water' it, as if it were a plant! When she has been given water, she usually will lay an egg immediately thereafter. She usually will lay no more than one egg per day. Once in a great while, I have been able to persuade her to lay two by giving her water again at night. Eggs are laid entirely at random in point of fact.

N.B. If your rucksack is full when you see the egg on the ground, do not return to the cave before collecting it. It may disappear!

Even if you 'water' the Chicken daily, it will die at some point. You will experience a scene wherein Amy will announce the death of the chicken. If you are playing Jack, you will be given a number of options in terms of the response you make to her news.

Here are the choices:

Don't let it bother you.I wonder how that happened.Let's cook her up.

The following dialogue will ensue if you choose: 'I wonder how that happened.'

Jack: She was sick, that's all.Amy: Maybe...Jack: We couldn't have done anything about it.Amy: I guess you're right.

When the Chicken dies, all you need to do to catch another is to set a small trap. You will be given the option once more to domesticate the first Chicken that you catch.

I believe that the normal life span of a Chicken that has been domesticated is about 100 days. That is approximately the length of time my Chickens have lasted in this game.

Second Confrontation with the Tiger

When you have made your cave more comfortable and rested sufficiently to bring your energy levels back to 100%, take Amy with you to visit the jungle again. This time, after entering the jungle, go to the east instead of moving north to the grasslands. You will be obliged to climb a few grassy steps, but you will find the tiger here. Fight the tiger, then go east to find a new location: a swamp!

The Swamp

The swamp is a classical 'puzzle' and requires that you bring your partner with you when you explore it, because you will be required to push quite a few logs in order to create a path through the maze. The first exit from the swamp into the Lake area is in the far northeast. If you go north in your exploration, you will encounter the alligator once more. Defeat him to chase him away as before.

Although the swamp is a rather nasty place, there are edible items here as well. Taro root, lotus root, ferns and mushrooms grow here. Chives and potatoes grow in an area in the northwest. Ferns cannot be eaten raw, by the way.

The Lake

When you have made your way through the swamp to the exit, you will find a new location. This is the shore of a lake. You will be unable to cross the lake at any point until you make a raft. The option to make a raft, therefore, will be given to you now. A raft, like the treehouse, cannot be used until every building stage is complete. You will need logs and rope for this task.

The materials needed to make a usable raft are:

Stage 1: 2 Logs, 1 RopeStage 2: 2 Logs, 1 RopeStage 3: 2 Logs, 2 Ropes

Meanwhile, there are other things that you can do to make your domestic life easier. As previously stated, you should have the option to make a table. When you upgrade to the third level of Table, you will make a chair for your partner. This will improve work efficiency and will prompt Jack to say that there should be a way to make life even easier.

The Smoker: Smoked Meat and Fish

Perhaps 'if we store food longer...'

Jack will suggest that it should be possible to dry food in order to preserve it. He then muses that smoking food on a rack might be even better.

Now you will have a new building option: A Smoker.

This allows you to build a Jerky Shelf.

The materials needed to build the Jerky Shelf or Smoker are:

1 Log, 1 Rope

Amy is the one who will make Jerky. It therefore becomes one of the 'Request' items, with Rope and Basket.

Smoking fish or meat is a two-step process. First, you need to stand in front of the Jerky Shelf to 'Check Jerky'. When you do that, you will open a menu offering 5 slots for meat or fish. Transfer up to 5 pieces of meat or fish to the drying rack in order to start the process.

After doing this, you can ask Amy to smoke the meat or fish as a task.

It takes three days to smoke any piece of meat or fish, although Amy may tell you she will do it in a day for whatever reason. It never takes less than three days, however. Whenever you place any meat or fish in the Smoker, make certain to ask your partner immediately to smoke it. If you fail to ask her to perform the task at once, the meat or fish will begin to rot.

N.B. Once meat or fish has been smoked, it can be stored in the Smoker as well as on the Shelf or in the Rucksack. It will not last indefinitely, but it does last longer than fresh meat or fish. When you are gathering materials for the last building stage of a Treehouse, you may find that you need all the space you can find for the 10 leaves needed to complete the house.

Jerky

The size of smoked meat that you obtain depends on the size of the meat placed in the Smoker. For example, as one might suspect, a field mouse will create only Small Smoked Meat. A duck, however, will produce Medium Smoked Meat and a Wolf will produce Large Smoked Meat. As previously stated, tell Amy immediately after you place the meat or fish in the Smoker that you want her to make Jerky, or the item will begin to rot. Placing an item in the Smoker does not insure that it will become Jerky!

Perishables or Rotting Food

Perishable items in this game will rot in time. There are two stages, and these are distinguished by the colour of the background behind the item. When the background turns pink, the item is beginning to 'go off'. When the background turns deep red, the item has become fairly rotten. One can use it even when the background is dark red, but one must be very careful.

Even an item with a pink background can have ill effects when eaten raw. If you use the 'Cut' method of preparation to make a salad, it is best only to use fresh items as an item with a pink background used in a salad can make every one ill. Whether or not illness results is random, so if you must use the item in this fashion, Quicksave your game before doing so.

An item with a pink background usually can be used safely if you grill, boil, steam or deep fry it.Sometimes items with deep red backgrounds can be eaten without ill effect if these cooking methods are employed. Again, the effects appear to be random.

There is a way to use even items with deep red backgrounds safely, however, and that is by using them to create Lunchboxes. Evidently, the game recognises only the food and liquid values of any item used in a Lunchbox and does not register its freshness. If you have food that has reached the deep red stage, use it to prepare a Lunchbox and it will not be wasted.

As previously stated, even Jerky is perishable, although it lasts longer than fresh meat or fish.

Recipes for Beginners

Your Picturebook contains all Recipes that you discover as well as items like tools, weapons and raw materials.

At this stage, you should be able to prepare a number of different dishes. All Recipes will be listed at the end of this guide, but here are a few that should be possible at this point in the game.

Once a Recipe is entered in the Picturebook, you will have a new option when cooking. When you choose an ingredient or group of ingredients used in a completed Recipe, you will be able to tap on a new 'Recipe' option in the Cooking menu in order to make it automatically.

For example, if the Recipe for Baked Potato has been entered in the Picturebook, you will be able to use a single potato in order to make it again, using the 'Recipe' option. Obviously, a single Potato will give less sustenance than four Potatoes, but a Potato used to make a 'Baked Potato' will have more value than a single Potato cooked in a manner that is not recognised as a proper Recipe.

Actually, there appears to be another requirement for any new Recipe to be entered in the Picturebook. Sometimes, making the dish once and having it pronounced 'Excellent' will not suffice to create the entry in the Picturebook. I made 'Boiled Egg' with 4 eggs and the required spice, but even after making it successfully twice, it was not entered in the Picturebook. I had to make it with a single Egg and the required spice in order to have it entered in the Picturebook. Grilled Clams, on the other hand, will not be entered in the Picturebook when you make it either with 1 or 2 Clams.

Moreover, when playing Jack, I gave 4 eggs to Amy and she made an 'excellent' Custard Pudding with them, but the Recipe was not entered in the Picturebook. I believe this is because you must be playing Amy in order to enter Amy's Recipes in the Picturebook.

Remember that you can create perfectly good, sustaining meals without using these Recipes. Lost in Blue 2 is not like Harvest Moon where any dish that is not considered a 'Recipe' will be a 'failed dish' or 'burned'. Any dishes made that are not included in the Picturebook may be described as 'Strange' or 'Freaky'. Nonetheless, they will restore your energy and sometimes be pronounced 'Excellent'. Proper recipes may give a bit more energy than others, but the main reason to make each of them at least once is to complete your Picturebook.

Cooked dishes may have value as food and as liquid. The value of the dish will be given at the time of consumption. When Amy and Jack eat together, you will see the values displayed for each of them. Value as replenishing liquids is given in blue and is given first. Value as food is given in green and is displayed second. I will add these values as time permits and will designate them as 'drink' and 'food'. Generally, grilled food does not replenish liquids, but boiled and steamed dishes will. Cut food (salads) usually will replenish liquids to some extent as well, depending on the ingredients. The best dishes in terms of replenishing both food and liquids are steamed and boiled dishes.

Liquid and Food Values can vary slightly depending upon the skill with which the dish is made. When not stated otherwise, values represent the dish made using the maximum number of ingredients, which is 4.

Remember that you need additional 'ingredients' in order to be able to use certain cooking methods. Any deep fried dish requires a portion of lard to make. Any boiled or steamed dish requires a bottle of water.

Completing the Raft:

The second stage of the raft requires 2 logs1 rope

The third stage of the raft requires:2 logs2 ropes

When you decide to build the third and last stage of the raft, make certain that your partner is with you, as you will not be able to use the finished raft alone.

Take plenty of food and water with you as well, as it will be a long day.

Exploring the Lake

The Lake

There are a number of places to explore on the lake. If you go north, you will meet the Tiger once again and be forced to chase him away by fighting him. Going north after that will take you to the Ruins. You may wish to explore these at a future date.

A New Shortcut to your Cave

If you go south on the Lake, you will be able to land at a beach from which you will be able to find a new shortcut to take you back to your home. Pushing the huge boulder into the water to create another stepping stone, then go south. Bear southeast rather than southwest to find the entrance to the small area on the east side of the river outside your cave home. As you walk through this area, you may find more than one feather lying on the ground. Collect them to make better arrows for your bow.

When you arrive at the river's edge, push the huge boulder there into the water to create a stepping stone at last to cross the river. If you walk across the stepping stones, you will find yourself outside your own cave!

Another Large Earthquake

When you have defeated the tiger in the swamp and then return home using the new shortcut, you will experience another large earthquake. This will prompt Amy to wonder if your lives will be in constant danger if you remain on the island. She will suggest that you find a way to escape before it is too late.

Diving

Diving is another mini-game that you must master if you wish to complete your Picturebook and if you wish to be able to escape ultimately from the island.

Diving is possible only when the tide is very low. You then will be able to run across the shore to a rock from which you will be able to dive.

Your first diving rock is found on Beach 1. It is at the southeast corner of the map. Remember that you need a low tide not only to reach the diving rock but in order to return from the diving rock to the beach. As you must depend on the tides, diving will take a great deal of time. Make certain that you have provisions when you go to a rock to dive.

In the diving mini-game, you first need to use your stylus in a sort of swooping motion to dive deeper into the water. When you actually reach the halfway point, a shark may threaten you. Hold the arrow with your stylus then to 'hold your breath' until the shark disappears. If and when you reach the sea bottom, you will be able to collect items. Use the stylus to dig the items from the sand.

Pieces of the map are found when diving. You must have the map to escape from the island, so diving is not an optional activity in this game.

The 1st Ruins

When you have 100% energy, plenty of food and water bottles, go back to the Lake to explore the ruins. If you did your 'footwork' previously, you will have created shortcuts for every island in the Lake area by pushing huge boulders into the water to create stepping stones. You therefore should be able to cross to the ruins on foot, going northeast from your cave home rather than taking the long way round through the Jungle and Swamp.

If you go to the beach below the ruins with your partner, you will experience a little scene wherein you decide to cool off in the water and have a friendly water fight.

Amy: Well... I guess I'll ju--!Yikes! It's cold!Jack: Here ya GO!Amy: Hey! Come on! I'm getting wet!Jack: Ha ha ha! Whoa!Amy: Got you back! Heheheheh!

After some more laughter, you will find yourself on the beach again.

Essentially, the ruins involve a number of puzzles. You must push blocks in order to be able to place red blocks on their corresponding red tiles, thereby opening doors to new chambers.

The first chamber in the ruins has two red blocks at the north below the closed door. If you go to the door with Amy, you will have a little conversation, and make the connection between the red tiles on the floor and the two red blocks.

What you need to do here is push each block forward (north) twice so that it rests on top of the corresponding tile. The door then will open.

In the second room, there is a configuration of grey cubic stones, in the shape of a C.

You cannot stand on these blocks as they are jagged on top. You therefore need to create a path through them by moving them to one side or the other.

Your ultimate goal is to be able to move the two red blocks to the left of this group onto the tiles to the west. This means that you cannot move any block directly against a red block or you will not be able to push it to the left.

Here is the configuration of jagged blocks:

Two blocks at the top.One block. One block. Two blocks at the bottom.

Basically you can ignore the two blocks at the top. Moving either of these accomplishes nothing.

First go to the block at the tip of the bottom of the C and push it down (south). This will free the spot next to the second block at the bottom, allowing you to push it to the left. Do that now, moving the other block that was at the bottom of the C to the left or west once.

Do not move the block that was above it at all yet.

Instead, move the block that was in the second row from the top to the left once.

Now you will have a sideways V configuration with the point facing east, formed by the last two blocks you moved and the block between them that you did not move.

Move the centre block that is the point of the V (the one that you never moved yet) either up or down (north or south). You then will find a clear path to the two red blocks in the west, and you will be able to move each of the red blocks onto the tiles in this chamber.

Go through the arch in the west to the third chamber.

In Chamber 3, you will find more individual jagged blocks on a long platform that leads from east to west. These blocks are in smaller groups. The first 'group' consists of two blocks adjacent to one another. Simply move the leftmost block left once in order to create a path to the second little group of blocks.

In the second group, there will be two blocks side by side. A third block is below them, with a space between the two and the third. Deal with the top pair of blocks first, obviously. Move the leftmost block down once. Move the block that was next to it to the right once. Go now to the third block and move it down once.

The third block now will be next to the red block, but to its right. That will not create a problem, as you only need to move the red block now down once, to place it on the corresponding red tile.

You now will see that there is a single jagged block between the two red blocks. This block cannot be moved. You will be obliged to climb over the second red block instead. You now should be able to push the second red block down (to the south) once, then to the left (west) once in order to place it on the other red tile against the western wall.

Go north to find two more red blocks and more jagged blocks. Here you must move the top block to the right (east twice).

Do not touch the red block yet. Instead go to the lowest jagged block and move it down (south) twice. Now you can move the jagged block above it down twice, freeing space to move the red block onto the tile by moving it first to the left, and finally pushing it up or north onto the red tile.

Now you can go north into the fourth chamber. Here you will see a single block. Push it up or north twice, then use it as a step to climb up onto the higher platform. Climbing up and down, follow the platform west, then north to another set of blocks.

Simply push the jagged block out of the way so that you can push the red block to the right repeatedly until you can place it on top of the red tile.

Climb up and walk north to find a single red block. Push it to the left onto the red tile and the archway will open, allowing you access to the fifth and last chamber.

In this chamber, there are a series of steps. At the bottom of the steps, there are two red blocks with two lighter blocks between them. Basically, you need to push the two lighter blocks that are in the centre north in order to free the area between the two red blocks. You then will be able to push the two red blocks onto the corresponding red tiles.

When you continue through the archway to the north, you will see light at the far north of the chamber. If you go forward in that direction, you will find yourself in a field.

You will remark: It's just a big field. There's nothing here to help us get off the island, ever. Amy: What a stupid thing to say.Jack apologises.

In fact, this area leads to Beach 4, but you probably will want to return home at this point and explore the new area another day.

If instead of going north to the field, you go east in the final chamber of the ruins, you will find a source of water in a rectangular basin. You can drink here and fill your water bottles.

Go west now and you will find another exit that leads to the beach on the lake. You now have a shortcut from the Lake to Beach 4 for future exploration.

Beach 4

When you have recovered from your exploration of the ruins, you may wish to use the shortcut in the Ruins to explore the large field to the north and continuing north, to find Beach 4.

The most unusual item you will find as soon as you arrive on the new beach is a lifeboat stranded high on the sands. No human presence will be found, but it is possible that the lifeboat could be used in future...

There is another diving rock on Beach 4, one that allows you to dive far deeper than the rock on Beach 1.

Your Second Treehouse

If you explore the large grassy fields to the north of the Ruins, you will discover another huge tree. Here you will have the option of building another Treehouse, should you desire.

Another Shortcut through the Swamp

Some new locations in this game actually advance the plot. Others are optional, but usually you can find a new shortcut or discover a new item when you explore a new location. There is a shortcut through the swamp. I am describing it here rather than including it in the first exploration of the swamp simply because you cannot do everything in a single trip.

You must take Amy with you in order to complete this shortcut. Go to the jungle, then take the path to the swamp entrance. When you enter the swamp, instead of going east, bear south. You may be required to push a log into the water in order to complete the new path. (It depends on whether or not you pushed all the logs into the water on your first trip.) There is a long peninsula at the south end of the map. There is an exit at the southwest of this peninsula. Take it and you will find yourself on some grassy steppes.

Continue to move south and you will find a log that needs to be pushed down to create a new step. When you have pushed this log down and have climbed down to the grassy steppes below, you will find that you are in the grassy steppes area between the 1st stepping stones and the Water Cave. You now have created a new shortcut to the Swamp area. This shortcut is useful if you wish to visit the stand of bamboo trees as well. It is a shorter trip if you cut through the southwest area of the swamp to enter the Jungle at its eastern entrance than if you go through the water cave, and up the mountain, entering the Jungle at its southwest entrance.

The Gorilla

So far, no exploration of the higher northeast area of the Jungle has been made. A new character will be introduced if you explore this area now. Instead of entering the Swamp from the Jungle, climb the little steps to find a huge rock in the northeast section. You will see a Gorilla there. He is seated in the very centre of the enormous rock and the first time you encounter him, you will declare that it gives you 'chills' to find yourself this close to a Gorilla. Continue to encounter him, as he holds an item that is critical to the plot.

It appears that you need to take Amy with you in order to initiate proper contact with the Gorilla. She will declare him to be 'cute'. After this, you will be able to stand in front of the Gorilla and initiate a mini-game with him.

A menu will open that gives you the following options:

Give Item.Talk. Leave. If you choose the option to 'Talk' to him, you will be required to speak into the microphone. The game will prompt you to make sounds 'like a gorilla'. Establishing a close relationship with the Gorilla requires that you 'Talk' to him at least four times, then give him items. When you choose the 'Talk' option, the Gorilla will speak first in a series of 'Hu's. He can say anything from 'Hu' to 'Huhuhuhu'. You must respond with the same number of 'Hu's in order to satisfy thim.

If you choose to give him an item, you will see an icon above the Gorilla's head. This icon represents the sort of item he wants. For the green icon, representing food, give him a lunchbox. For the blue icon, representing water, give him a Pineapple or Coconut. When the icon is an exclamation point, give him a Necklace. When you give him an item, he will respond with an action and an item in return.

When the Gorilla is satisfied with your response, he will clap his hands over his head, then scratch his backside while he contemplates the choice of items he will give to you in return. When you first begin to give him the items he requests, he will respond by giving you a bunch of bananas.

You need to persevere until he gives you some unique items instead.

One More Shortcut through the Jungle

There is one more shortcut through the Jungle that can be quite useful. It is a narrow path cut into the cliffs at the northern edge of the jungle. You will need to bring your partner with you the first time you do this in order to complete the path by pushing a log down to form a step at the western end. To access this path, you need to enter the swamp from the Jungle, then exit the swamp again in the far northwest, returning to the Jungle at a more northern point. You will find yourself east of the Gorilla's rock. Find the path that leads west along the northern edge of the Jungle and go west. You usually can find three tree vines along this path, which makes it even more useful. When you reach the log at the western end of the path, push it down to form a step. You now have created another shortcut that leads from the entrance to the grasslands to the northern end of the Swamp. In this area of the Swamp, you can find chives and potatoes.

Exploring the Lake Again

In Lost in Blue 2, there are locations that you must visit at certain points in order to advance the plot. Other areas can be explored at leisure, but you always will find there is a benefit to be gained from doing so.

The Hot Springs

Return to the Lake and go to the eastern shore. Climb the rocks to discover a Hot Spring in an alcove made of rock in the shape of a C. The Hot Spring will recover some of your fatigue and is a very useful device. Please note that you only can use the Hot Springs once in a single day. If you attempt to return to use it again, you will be unable to do so.

Mugwort

If you climb the rocks directly to the south of the Hot Spring, you will find a new item growing at the top: Mugwort. This item is useful if and when you give it to a dying man... When you next explore the Ruins, take some Mugwort with you.

Flat Rock

When you explore the Lake, search the Beach on the north shore, below the ruins. You should be able to find a Flat Rock there. Take it home to Amy and you will obtain a new Cooking option: Stir Fry. With all possible cooking methods, you will be able to complete the Recipe section of the Picturebook. It only remains to broaden your ingredient base through hunting and fishing.

A New Fishing Tool

If you find yourself in the Lake area at night, do a bit of fishing there. It does not matter whether you use a Fishing Rod or a Spear, but you must fish after dusk.

If you stand on the middle stepping stone in the southwest area of the Lake, you should be able to catch Eels.

When you catch a new type of fish at night, Jack will remark that he would be able to catch even more new varieties of fish if he had better bait. You then will unlock the option to create a 'Lure'.

Lures

A number of different Lures can be created now. To make a Lure, you need only Twigs. Choose the 'Lure' option in the 'Make Tools' menu and you will see the types of Lures that can be carved from Twigs.

Making Lures is another mini-game. The outline of the Lure will be provided as a series of dots. You must touch each dot precisely with the stylus. If you 'miss' even slightly, the Lure will be destroyed, along with the Twigs used to make it. You may wish to Quicksave, therefore, before you begin to carve any Lure. All Lures are included in the Picturebook, so you should make each once at least in order to complete it.

Another Fishing Method

Use your Fishing Rod to try to catch Fish at the Beach. After you have failed to catch anything after two or three attempts, Jack will begin to think...

Jack: I wonder if there's an easier way to catch more fish. Maybe if I throw some bait out onto the water.'

You can now use 'Bait' for spearing.

When you use your Spear, you will see a new icon in the bottom right corner of the Touchscreen. Tapping on it will throw one piece of bait (one worm) in the water.

Exploring the 'Search' Option

At this point in the game, you should have a fair amount of food stored in the form of Lunchboxes and Smoked Meat. You should have a good supply of bamboo and vines as well as firewood. You therefore should have more time to explore your environment.

Using the stylus to tap the ground at your character's feet allows you to explore the ground itself. In the same manner as you use the stylus when you find an object designated by ??? at the beach, you can search any ground to find interesting and useful items. Some are living creatures like turtles and lizards that can be cooked and eaten. Others are beautiful stones that can be used to create jewelry.

When you are in the Jungle, you may see a small creature scurry across the ground in front of you. Use the 'Search' option to find it on the ground. You may not find it immediately, but keep trying. If you saw it with the 'naked eye', it will be there somewhere. When you see it on the ground using the 'Search' option, use your stylus to drag it into your rucksack. Turtles are found often in the Jungle.

Lizards are found often in the Grasslands.

Spice Tip

When you are using the 'Search' option and find a spice, continue to search in the same location. You may find three or four spices, one after another. The same holds true with respect to rock salt and shells on the beach. Stand in the same spot after using the 'Search' option and you can collect more than one item often before you cease to find anything.

The 2nd Ruins

To be able to explore the 2nd Ruins, you have to experience an Earthquake while you are inside the Ruins one day. There is a way to cheat
