CONSTRUCTION PLANNING AND PRACTICES
LCPS has the resources, the experience and the knowledge to do “Green” right.Throughout the growth period of LCPS, we have continued to include “Green” practices in all our building projects. For LCPS, building “Green” is nothing new.Being a responsible builder is good for the environment and also for the building’s occupants. Equally important, these practices are good for the bottom line and serve as an example to the entire construction industry.

CONTAMINANT CONTROL
There can be dire consequences when people encounter biologically harmful chemicals.Awareness of contaminants, not introducing new potential contaminants, and a plan to remove existing contaminants reduces the risk of potential harm.LCPS continues to be diligent in eliminating contaminants from our schools.

FOODWhat we choose to eat can have a direct impact on our ability to enjoy life to its fullest. This is true for everyone, despite one’s age and current health. Our food choices play a major role in promoting and maintaining good health and optimal growth in infants, children and adolescentsSchools play an important role in providing healthy environments that help students establish healthy eating habits that will follow them throughout their lives.

GREEN SPACESWe are all familiar with the strength of groups of people who work together in a company or organization. We can do so much more in a "system" than as isolated individuals. Nature is a system -- a life support system for everyone involved -- plants, animals...and yes, humans.By carefully incorporating natural spaces into our schools, we all benefit.

INDOOR AIR QUALITY
People spend a large portion of their time inside buildings. Between the ages of 5 and 18, a student may spend 14,000 hours inside a school building (Environmental Defense Fund, 1999).Monitoring indoor air quality and maintaining low indoor pollutant levels is very important to the health and well-being of the people who use our buildings

PURCHASING DECISIONSIt is important to consider environmental factors in all purchasing decisionsWhen possible, preference is given to those products and services that have a lesser or reduced effect on human health and the environment when compared with competing products or services that serve the same purpose. Green procurement practices create healthier places to live and work.

RECYCLINGRecycling gives a second life to materials that would have been thrown away. After an item has been used, the materials used to make that item can sometimes be made into something else.Through recycling, we can eliminate a lot of waste.

REDUCTIONReducing the amount of resources that one uses is the most effective way to cut down on waste. In a world with limited resources, any time that fewer resources are used, we assure that waste is limited and that there will be more remaining for future generations.Organizations should take the time to limit waste through disciplined actions that control consumption.

TRANSPORTATIONThe use of hybrid vehicles will reduce the CO2emissions generated and decrease dependence on imported oil. Safe pedestrian patterns and walking routes with crossing guards are provided when appropriate. The fastest & most efficient routes for bus travel are calculated. By offering public transportation we reduce the need for multiple vehicles to be on the road, which reduces traffic congestion and harmful emissions.

UTILITIES MANAGEMENT
Reducing energy consumption is inherently a “Green" activity. LCPS has reduced the direct consumption of fossil fuels and electricity at our sites. In addition LCPS works to conserve water, and reduce harmful emissions.Organizations that reduce their energy use have a direct impact on greenhouse gas emissions that occur through the combustion of natural resources.“We measure what we value and we value what we measure.”
