Welcome to the July 2018 edition of the LEFARS newsletter. With a scorching June (the hottest for several years) the warm weather seems to be with us for a few more weeks.
With the June newsletter being late, this edition covers a smaller period. There’s a report and photos from the Air Britain Fly In held on June 30th and July 1st at North Weald Airfield.
The newsletter is taking a break for the Summer and possibly longer. Very little feedback is received from Club mem-bers, some I know do not read the newsletter at all.
There will still be news items posted on the LEFARS blog and regular emails sent to all paid-up members with Event news, updates etc. The LEFARS Blog will also be updated regularly and in-clude more timely content.
I have enjoyed editing the newsletter

The late June newsletter due to attendance at the Frie-drichshafen Ham Radio Show has meant that the July issue is coming out with only a couple of weeks events to report. The Essex CW club gave an interesting talk about CW and the resources to support you if you wish to learn morse. The only other event of note was the Air Britain Fly In held at North Weald Airfield at the end of June. We put on a small exhibit together with a VHF and HF station although conditions on HF were poor but 2M conditions were much better with a station on the top of Snowdon heard at 5&9.
David Coles M0IDF put on an exhibit of a SCU9 Signals tent and operated on 80M working stations around the UK on the VMARS net. As an event, the Fly In was disap-pointing with a perceived lack of attendees and aircraft flying. The continuation of the hot weather and the excel-lent catering provided by Ron G6LTT and XYL Karen real-ly made for an enjoyable weekend.

June meetings at All Saints and external events.
It was an informal evening on June 8th. David M0VID “rang the bell” and provided the latest news received. There was also an update on Marc G0TOC and an oppor-tunity to sign a Get Well card. Several lively discussions ensued.
The meeting on 22nd June was a talk by Founder member Andy Kersey G0IBN and Chairman Dean G4WQI (right and left, below respectively in the photos below) from the Essex CW Club (ECWARC) entitled `Morse Code”.
Andy G0IBN and Dean G4WQI gave a very interesting lecture and reminded us that CW is alive and well, not just in Essex but further afield. There are regu-lar Morse Classes held at Danbury Village Hall. Andy G0IBN tutors the complete beginner up to 10wpm; Dean G4WQI takes over for higher speeds.
A straight morse key is used for tuition alt-hough there was a vari-ety of paddle keys demonstrated as well. Further details of ECWARC can be found at www.essexcw.org.uk

Not a lot to report this month, The GB2NWA Air Britain Fly In at North Weald Airfield was a success, lightly at-tended by a few familiar faces and well reported else-where in this publication. Dave M0IDF's Vintage Radio display was interesting and informative drawing a lot of attention from the public who soaked up the atmosphere in the cool dark shade of his display. Lots of charismatic old stuff and nearly forgotten aromas, warm valves, crisp clean smell of canvas, (flax to carrot crunchers). He was getting out to distant foreign lands as well, despite the age, low wattage and AM mode of his equipment. The next event on 8th July is the Donkey Derby on Sun-day at Theydon Bois 12 ‘till 4.30pm. Free entrance and free parking on the green. See page 5. 73

Sitting here as I am in the hot sunshine under a big blue sky on top of a hill overlooking the gently rolling hills sur-rounding the valley with the Welland river meandering along a mile away, I am distracted by the view of the tree- lined fields laid out below and the Lilliputian villages all with different shaped church spires. It’s difficult to put finger to tablet and write something interesting radio relat-ed what with low flying Chinooks and red kites passing overhead at tree top height trying their very best to look like land-locked Frigate birds. Well here goes, lessons learned are that if you want to get out and be heard and hear as well then it’s the ability of your aerial that counts. Almost any modern 100watt radio will do. A big single band beam on a decent mast is a good starting place and for most of us it will have to be a portable QTH. I shall be driving Team SNB potty with silly questions (Oh the trials and tribulations of being a Radio Guru!). A cheaper alternative will be a half wave vertical with a big roach pole and four tuned counterpoise wires a meter off the ground fed by a 1:1 balun. Onto club matters…

Air Britain Fly In, North Weald Airfield 30th June/1st July 2018
The 70th Air Britain Fly In was held at North Weald Airfield over the weekend of 30th June and 1st July. LEFARS once again were there to promote Amateur Radio and activate Special event callsign GB2NWA. The sun shone — brightly! 32C was recorded on Sunday and no chance of rain. Setting up started on Friday afternoon (29th June) with main tent, gazebo and trailer mast in place by 6.30pm. Dave M0IDF also set up his SCU9 station and stayed over-night and the whole weekend. It gave him the opportunity to test out the Vintage Station - A KW Vanguard AM/CW transmitter (1960) and HRO receiver (1941) set up for 80m AM operation. Net control on 80m achieved with a Class D Wavemeter. Dave M0IDF worked several stations on three separate VMARS nets over the weekend. [photos on pages 10-11]. Two (VMARS) visitors were Derek M0VRA and Steve G3ZRS.
More modern equipment was in use but disguised—photo below shows the “FT-857m” transceiver and battery pack in green livery.
The LEFARS publicity table was held down by a T1154 and R1155 with room for the usual display literature and space for a Morse key, an opportunity for children (and older ones) to send their names in Morse. [photos page 10]. The LEFARS trailer mast was put to good use to support the Club’s new Diamond X-300 2m/70cm colinear and 80m inverted-L wire antenna, Its height limited to 35 feet as
fairly close to the short runway. The 2kVA Honda Gen-erator and two Jerry cans of petrol kept the stations on air over the weekend. On Saturday 30th June “reinforcements” arrived in the form of Ron G6LTT and XYL Karen. They brought with them the Field Kitchen from which emanated a steady supply of tea and food over the weekend. There’s noth-ing quite like partaking in a BBQ on a Saturday evening. Also Derek M0XDC and XYL Sharon who camped over the weekend and looked after the equipment overnight.
On page 8 there’s a selection of aeroplanes seen over the weekend. This year was light on visiting pilots but
this could be attributed to a change of date, and other events taking place at the same time. The main Air Brit-ain marquee had a large selection of books on sale plus
a few other stalls and vendors.
The C-54 Skymaster was open to visitors. Andy G8RZA and Dave M0IDF spent some time looking over the old
aircraft . This could be an article its own right!
The main 2m LEFARS station comprised the Icom IC-
7000 and the X-300 colinear at 35’. Conditions were good with a station on Snowdon being heard. In all 45
contacts were made on 2M FM, mostly local. Operators were Dave M0MBD, John G0VEH, Andy G8RZA, John G8DZH and Richard G4DDP. On 70cm Dutch FM re-
peater PI2NOS was heard with good signal strength. In addition 144.725 MHz was monitored for local talk-in.
The Icom IC-7300 was used on 40m and 80m SSB for a few contacts by Johns G0VEH and G8DZH respectively.
Conditions were fairly flat during the day. A few DL sta-tions on 40m and a local net on 80m on Sunday.
The vintage station run by Dave M0IDF made 45-50 AM QSOs on 80m (exact number unknown at the time of
writing but logs to be made available soon). 80m was more lively in the evenings and early mornings. Some of
the contacts were duplicates (with participation in three VMARS nets). Dave M0IDF reported on the LEFARS Facebook page….
“Wow! what a weekend at North Weald - superb weather, great company, good food (thanks again Karen!) and for me a very successful vin-tage station. Loads of contacts on 80m AM on the VMARS nets and friends up and down the country. Just brilliant.
Here's a pic or two ** of the main Vintage sta-tion.. 1960 KW Vanguard transmitter with a 1941 HRO receiver with Astatic D104 "chicken choker" microphone.
A large doublet would have been nice but the
aerial options for 80m were restricted by Health and Safety considerations. Fortunately nobody objected to the semi improvised inverted L from
the trailer mast to the large Marquee I set up after hours on a Friday night! Worked a treat on the VMARS nets the following morning..”

Marc G0TOC was amongst the LEFARS visitors over the weekend. It was nice to see him so soon after his recent return from hospital [photo on page 3]. There is a new QSL card for confirmed GB2NWA contacts.
Some familiar LEFARians over the weekend….
Thank you to all those who helped set up on Friday af-
ternoon/evening, dismantle on Sunday PM and provided support over the weekend. A special thanks to Karen and Ron G6LTT for the catering! It was appreciated by all.
