The Battle of Seven Oaks: A M tis Perspective

The Battle of Seven Oaks was a culmination of the Pemmican Wars and the escalating fur trade disputesbetween the Hudsons Bay Company (HBC) and the North West Company (NWC). Most of Governor

Semples men who were killed in this confrontation were partof an Irish paramilitary force hired by Selkirk to cut off theNWC trade. Most accounts of this encounter are one-sidedand do not list the men from both sides who were involved inthis battle. This monograph will correct these omissions. Thewidely held beliefs that the battle was against the Selkirk Settlers and that Cuthbert Grant attacked Governor Sempleare shown to be false.

Mtis Veterans of Manitoba:From Buffalo to B attlefields

When World War One was declared, volunteers from allareas of the Mtis nation came forward to join the Canadian

Army. They had to forget the inhumane treatment whichother Canadian soldiers had recently inflicted on their fathersand mothers during the dark days of 1870 and 1885. Theyset aside these sad stories and feelings to fight a commonenemy. Germany was waging war against France, a countrythat they had often heard of as many of their ancestors hadcome from there. They were as anxious to visit France as achild would be to visit a grandparent.

Wom en of the Mtis Nation

Women of the Mtis Nation is intended to give the reader an overview of Mtis history through thebiographies of a very diverse cross section of North Americas Mtis women. We attempt to correct theoversight of previous historical treatments which have failed to document the lives of Mtis women.

Mtis women were integral to all endeavours. Mtis women played important roles in commercial anddomestic production and in the political life of what was to become the Canadian and American

Northwest. Mtis women were the clothing designers, doctors, pharmacists, midwives, peacekeepers, teachers, artists andagriculturalists. Mtis women were the childrens teachers andkeepers of the Mtis languages.

Within this volume, well-known Mtis personalities (such aswriters Louise Erdrich and Maria Campbell) as well as theunsung heroes of Mtis communities and families aredocumented.
