LOUISE BALAAM
New Coast Paintings
Prize-winning landscape artist Louise Balaam’s work in the Threadneedle Prize exhibition in 2009 was described as “luscious” by Jackie Wullshlager, art critic of the Financial Times. Her work has been shown at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, the Discerning Eye, New English Art Club, and the Royal West of England Academy. These new large paintings, in oil on canvas, are based on different aspects of the coast: the island of Mull in Scotland, Cornwall, and the Norfolk coast.
“This show is about my fascination with places where the elements of land and sea meet, and the special, wild qualities I find there. My work is inspired by an emotional response to the natural world, in particular to the quality of light. I walk and draw in the landscape, absorbing and collecting as much information as possible, then work in the studio. I love the visceral, sensual qualities of oil paint, and I’m fascinated by how, through the mysterious process of painting, the marks of the brush can somehow convey an emotional resonance”.
Louise Balaam gained her BA and MA in Fine Art in Canterbury (KIAD and Christchurch University College). She has work in a large number of private collections.
